This Easy Candy Heart Costume DIY is Perfect for Valentine's Day

People celebrate Valentine's Day in a variety of ways. There's the usual gift-giving and exchanging of sappy cards. Others go out on romantic getaways or take their partner to a romantic candle-lit dinner. Or people may even show their love for each other by wearing Valentine's Day costumes, like a cupid costume or the King and Queen of Hearts. However, if you're looking for a fun and simple costume DIY for Valentine's Day that can really say it all, we'll show you how to modify a heart costume into a candy conversation heart costume!

What You'll Need to Make a Candy Heart Costume

Before you get down to making your personalized candy costume, you'll want to gather a few supplies so that you can put words onto the costume. You will need:

  • Heart Costume
  • Paper
  • Ironing Board
  • Scissors
  • Clothing Iron
  • White Iron-On Vinyl Sheets
  • White Duct Tape (Optional)

Step 1:

Take out your heart costume and try it on to make sure that it's a good fit. If you're making the candy heart costume for a child, you're going to need to get the child heart costume instead of the adult one.

Step 2:

Choose a phrase to put onto your conversation heart! There are tons of candy heart sayings to choose from, but don't be afraid to create your own. Some great ideas include: be mine, xoxo, love you, hug me and I love you.

Step 3:

Once you have your conversation heart saying picked out, print it out on paper first and compare that to the costume. This is so you know how big to make the letters when you cut them out of the iron-on vinyl sheets. (Plus you don't want to mess up when you start cutting out the vinyl!) If everything looks good, then you'll use those printed sheets as the paper templates.

Step 4:

Make sure to check out the directions for your iron-on vinyl so that you place your paper templates on the correct side of the vinyl as you cut out the letters. (The last thing you want is to have letters on backward!) If you're using the optional white duct tape, use the paper letters to help you determine how big you need to cut your tape strips when making letters to stick onto the heart costume.

Step 5:

Continue to follow the directions for the iron-on vinyl as you iron the letters onto your costume. (Once they're ironed on, they won't come off easily.) After you have your candy heart saying ironed onto your costume, your conversation heart costume should be complete!

Then, all you have to do is surprise your significant other on V-Day. Stop by their workplace in your V-Day costume to say hi, wake them up in the morning or find some other fun and creative way to brighten their day. They'll think that you're the sweetest with your custom candy heart costume.
