Quidditching

Internet memes and costumes. They go together like, erm, well they just DO, okay? To be honest, we had a tough time deciding which viral photo craze to try first! “Hadoukening” would have been cool in our Street Fighter costumes, “Vadering” would have been great with Star Wars costumes (exhibit A: our Harlem Shake video), but when “Quidditching” came along we were spellbound. (Yep, went there.)

So here are a few Muggles from HalloweenCostumes.com having some fun on a perfectly snowy Minnesotan Quidditch Pitch, aka the park across the street from our office.

Have you got the itch to "Quidditch?" Think you can outdo us? Grab some costumes and show us what you’ve got! Post your pics on our Facebook wall and we’ll let the fans decide…

Wampa Sighting

Will winter ever quit here in the Midwest? April 19th and a foot of snow? Looks like we’re going the way of ice planet Hoth, and the Wampas are moving in. And even though they smell worse on the inside (of your house), everyone should put their Tauntauns indoors until further notice!

‘Professor Paranormal’—Q&A with Loyd Auerbach

Professor and professional mentalist Loyd Auerbach’s encyclopedic knowledge of the paranormal certainly didn’t materialize overnight. With over three decades in the field and a Master’s in Parapsychology, Professor Auerbach is the Director of the Office of Paranormal Investigations and serves on the Board of Directors for the Rhine Research Center, an organization dedicated to the study of human consciousness and parapsychology.

But that just scrapes the surface of his experience. On faculty at Atlantic University and JFK University, Auerbach currently teaches parapsychology distance courses at HCH Institute and recently finished teaching an online course for the Rhine Education Center/Rhine Research Center.

Author of eight books pertaining to the paranormal–including his landmark first book, “ESP, Hauntings and Poltergeists: A Parapsychologist’s Handbook”(1986, Warner Books), dubbed the “Sacred Text”` on ghosts by Newsweek –Auerbach is also the President of the Forever Family Foundation, an organization that supports the research of Life After Death (and especially work with mediums). With interviews posted on thousands of media broadcasts, programs and publications, Auerbach has appeared on The View, Larry King Live,Coast to Coast AM with George Noory, The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times to name a few. (For a full list of Professor Auerbach’s work and experience, see here.)

With such a busy schedule, HalloweenCostumes.com jumped at the chance to interview Professor Auerbach on his life and career as a thought-leader in the world of the paranormal.

1. Between your work with the Office of Paranormal Investigations, the Rhine Research Center, speaking engagements, teaching at universities and your work as a writer, what is most fulfilling about your career? If you had to focus on just one thing, what would it be?

That’s a tough question to answer. In many respects, it’s teaching and speaking (hard to separate the two) that are most fulfilling, though I prefer teaching with a live audience rather than the online courses that are now cropping up…more immediate interaction (and livelier interaction). I also like to see the faces of my students or audience, watching for understanding and more thought about the subject. There’s also the humor element of my speaking/teaching – that doesn’t translate online well. I love getting people thinking and laughing at the same time.

I also love working in TV, as crazy as that business is – though I’m just as much interested in being behind the camera as in front (possibly even more).

2. In the whole of your career in parapsychology and studying the paranormal, what would you say was the biggest watershed moment and what surprised you most?

Another tough one, since I’ve had so many. Probably one watershed moment for me was an apparition case back in 1985 with a family curious about their ghost (and the 12 yr. old boy apparently having daily talks with her). There was so much rich information about the woman who was the ghost that was later verified (only living relative) and the opportunity to “talk” with her (albeit through the intermediary of the boy) about what it was like dying, coming back to her home from where she died in the hospital, how she believed she could be seen by some and not others, and what she thought about her existence. Oh, and where she got her clothes.

Based on everything from that case, on the family, the potential sources of information, the answers from the apparition about her existence, and even more, there simply was no other explanation that made sense. This was a case of consciousness surviving death, and the first one I’d personally encountered that clinched it for me.

Surprises have abounded, especially around what I’ve been able to witness in cases and in working with psychics, mediums, other experts in my field, and even a few celebrities. One of the best periods of my career involved my work with the late, great Martin Caidin on PK – though just being around him and talking with him numerous times helped me grow as a researcher and as a person.

3. What is the most convincing evidence for life after death and the existence of ghosts that you’ve seen in your career? Are ghosts real?

The evidence for apparitions – ghosts – is in the work of my colleagues going back even before the founding of the Society for Psychical Research in 1882. It’s in the incredible number of experiences of apparitions over the last 130 years people have had, especially with friends and loved ones who have just died (without the witness even knowing). It’s a preponderance of evidence.

For me, it’s also in the cases I’ve investigated, such as the one mentioned above, and others with patterns of information and communication that logically lead to support of consciousness surviving death (at least in some cases) – at least if one is open to consciousness and brain being potentially separable (as opposed to the materialist monism concept that consciousness is a property of the brain, not something more than/different than the brain).

Some of the best evidence for life after death that is so difficult to counter with any other psychic/ESP hypothesis is in the cases of the reincarnation type, especially cases involving little children who remember previous lives (with verifiable details!).

I do hold the opinion that ghosts (as in apparitions; consciousness surviving death) exist. The evidence is there.

Of course, it’s not proven, nor do I believe proof is forthcoming until Science decides what it thinks Consciousness is, and whether it’s something more than/different than just the brain.

4. You’ve drawn affinities between seeing an apparition and telepathy in the past. Can you expand on this? Does this sometimes lead to one person seeing an apparition when others cannot?

One of the older – and more logical – models of apparitions, and the one that makes the most sense to me and many others in the field, is kind of a telepathic model. The model of an apparition is that it is consciousness without form. As the apparition has no form, and no sensory organs or normal ability to communicate, he or she essentially connects to the minds of living people. If it’s mind to mind communication or awareness, that makes it telepathy.

For us to perceive the discarnate entity, the apparition essentially broadcasts sensory information (what he or she looks, sounds, feels and smells like) to the minds of us living folk. Our brains/minds process the telepathic signals and add them to what our normal senses are picking up. Some people do better with visual input, some with auditory or other kinds of information. Some can process combinations.

Because they have no physical form that reflects light or physically creates sound, they are not seen with the eye or heard with the ears, and such. It’s why in a crowded room with lots of living people and a ghost some see the ghost, some hear him, some feel his presence, some smell his cologne and some get different combinations of those perceptions. And of course, lots of people in the room may get nothing at all. If they could reflect light or move the air to create sound or give off an odor, everyone in the room paying attention to that spot would see, hear, smell, and so on. This is also why ghosts can’t be photographed – they don’t reflect light.

5. Can one be trained to access psychic perceptions?

People can definitely become more psychic, as most of us are essentially educated out of psychic perceptions/abilities by our parents (who usually don’t believe), our schooling, and our society.

The late psychic Alex Tanous, who worked extensively with the American Society for Psychical Research in the 70s and 80s, once told me that if people would simply “open their eyes” and take conscious note of the world around them, they’d see a lot more to it. We tend to filter out so much of what goes in our normal senses, not noticing much of what comes into our perceptions, that it’s no surprise that we simply don’t notice the psychic input.

We’re all psychic to some extent, but we hardly notice this. Most of our psi experiences tend to be around rather mundane things rather than dramatic bursts of information. One of the simplest techniques is to be consciously aware of your surroundings and how you are reacting to them as much as you can. Alex suggested to me something I’ve heard again and again from psychics I have come to respect:  start noticing what you experience through your normal senses, and you’ll start noticing a few “extra” perceptions.

In reported ghost cases, being open to all perceptions makes you a better observer, and better able to spot non-psychic explanations for what people report. It also makes you able to notice that you’re perceiving something “extra” in the environment.

6. Are out of body experiences (OBEs) more common than actual hauntings? For our readers, can you briefly explain the difference between an OBE, apparition, haunting and poltergeist?

OBEs are first, the sensation of being outside the body – specifically with a change in perspective. People often report looking back at their own physical bodies. Some can then go elsewhere and perceive what’s actually going on at another location, though unlike Remote Viewing, they feel like they are actually at that location. In some rare cases, people in those other locations see the OBE-traveler, kind of as a ghost. We can call those cases of bilocation or cases of Living Apparitions (apparitions of the living), many of which are on record going back to the beginnings of the Society for Psychical Research and before.

An apparition is our personality (or spirit, soul, consciousness, mind or whatever you want to call it) surviving the death of the body, and capable of interaction with the living (and presumably other apparitions). This is the true definition of a ghost or spirit of the dead.

A haunting is based in/around a location (or object), and holds/records information about its history. Our own psychic abilities allow us to pick up certain play-backs of this history, including sightings of people. However, these are recordings, not conscious beings. Referred to as “place memory,” “psychic imprints,” and “residual hauntings.”

Poltergeist cases, though they have been confused with ghosts, have only rare instances of ghostly figures being seen or heard. Instead, the “symptoms” are physical effects, such as moving objects, unexplained behavior of electronics, raps in the walls, and other effects observable without the need for psychic perception (because they are physical events). Over the last century, a hypothesis was developed and tested again and again successfully indicating that poltergeist phenomena are caused by the subconscious mind of a living person, generally someone in the household undergoing emotional and/or psychological stress.

Effects are caused by psychokinesis (PK) – mind over matter. Unconsciously, the ability can run unfettered by our beliefs. The late researcher William G. Roll coined the phrase Recurrent Spontaneous Psycho-Kinesis (RSPK) to cover this situation. Poltergeist PK is chaotic, almost like a temper tantrum or someone blowing off steam.

Apparitional PK tends to be more deliberate and measured, and rarely chaotic.

There are more hauntings than any of the others, as the environment is all around us and the potential for emotions and for human activity in general to be “recorded” into it is something we can’t even measure.

7. Does the “astral” body really exist and what evidence supports its existence?

Parapsychologists don’t use the term “astral travel” or “astral body” at all in research/work with OBEs. That’s a metaphysical/occult idea. Research indicates that something, some part of our consciousness, might leave the body, but that’s a far cry from concepts of an astral double. In the cases of bilocation/living apparitions, the connection with the witnesses seems to be like that of apparitions being perceived (which is why OBEers being seen also have clothing on – part of the traveler’s self-image, like a ghosts).

The metaphysical description of astral travel holds that we’re tethered to our physical bodies by a silver cord. However, surveys of people having had OBEs (and work with some of the best subjects) indicates that only a very small portion of experiencers have that silver cord safety line (and not the best of the OBEers).

8. In your career, have you come across non-human spiritual entities (demons, etc.)?  In your experience, do such forces or entities exist?

Other than apparitions of pets, I have not come across entities other than human. While there might be conscious, intelligent or semi-intelligent non-human entities, I’ve not seen evidence to convince me of that, and certainly have found contradictory evidence that what people call “evil” (mainly in response to human apparition or haunting cases) is not consciously devious, malevolent, evil, etc., though sometimes harmful (as in “watch your step, there’s a pothole there” or the presence of a ghost being psychologically detrimental to the people in the home simply because they’re not getting along).

These days, “evil” and “malevolent” and “demonic” are tossed around a lot, especially by the TV ghost hunters and folks who mimic them (because it’s cool). Often the “evidence” I’m told about or shown comes from “investigators” who have barged into a house and started yelling at the ghost without any attempt at pleasant communication. What conscious person (living or dead) would not respond in kind to such rudeness? That so many seem to come up with “Get out!” as an EVP indicates the ghosts are reacting to the bad behavior of the ghost hunters – who I would contend are the “evil” ones in many situations. So often, the ghosts need communication and help with their situation.

In addition, so often what’s reported as “demonic” has a very non-paranormal explanation (from misinterpretation of a bad, unsafe physical environment to living-person domestic violence).

As for demons themselves, I wish people would stop using that religion-bound term. Maybe there are things out there that are harmful, like sharks, but I don’t think so. Even if there were, I don’t buy the “fallen angel” or “spawn of Satan” explanation. Is a shark demonic? In haunting cases, bad, violent events can leave an imprint (evil acts of living people), which can be perceived by the living. Those can be harmful (psychologically), and even cause psychosomatic responses of a negative type (unconsciously caused, due to picking up on what went on before).

If you haven’t started prepping for Halloween 2013 yet, it’s about time you get started! Why you ask? Yesterday was halfway to Halloween, which means the countdown to Halloween has begun!  That’s right, only six months for you to do justice to your costume selection, decorations and party treats. That should be enough time, right? Not if you’re trolling for ideas on Pinterest! We’ve found tons of awesome and not so awesome Halloween ideas on the application most popular for DIYers. Here’s a list of some of our favorites for what not to do, or what we’re calling the 10 worst DIY Halloween ideas on Pinterest.

Food:

Jack 'O Lantern Cheeseburgers:

These Jack ‘O Lantern cheeseburgers are super adorable and an awesome themed food item in theory. But, if you’ve ever had a cheeseburger, especially one that’s hot off the grill, you know that the cheese gets melty in a hurry. And, we’re assuming that melted faces won’t look as pretty as the ones in the picture.

Decorations:

Milk Jug Creatures:

This DIY project looks like it was created as a way to turn trash into treasure. Which is great, until the smell of old milk makes your cat or dog attracted to your decorations. And, c’mon, who really wants to line their beautiful hardwood stairs with old milk jugs that look like they’re ready for the trash? Not us.

Spaghetti Spider Webs:

At first we weren’t sure if this was supposed to be a food idea or a decoration idea, which was probably the first reason why it ended up on the list. Well, let’s just say that’s not the only reason why this is on the list. There’s no need to explain the horrors of having food that’s dyed green turn moldy.

Tangled Web Decoration:

If you’ve been on Pinterest longer than five seconds, you’ve probably seen some version of this craft. To create this beauty you blow up a balloon, wrap it in plastic wrap, tie tons of string around it, Mod Podge it, let dry, pop the balloon and pull out the plastic wrap. Great! If you can follow ALL of those steps and somehow manage to keep the final decoration from deflating, you’ve successfully done what NO ONE on Pinterest can do and you should probably get tested for being a genius.

Mini Ghost Decorations:

When your list of supplies includes a tampon and googly eyes, you should just move onto another craft. But, you can’t stop looking at the picture, can you?

Glow in the Dark Yard Ghosts:

Now, we haven’t seen these in person and have yet to try them out, but this picture is anything but ghost-like. They look like you’ve created a couple gown forms for your next set of Renaissance costumes and forgot them out in the yard. However, we’d be happy for one of our readers to prove us wrong with some impressive night shots with these babies glowing in the dark and scaring neighborhood children.

DIY Female Hulk Hogan Costume:

This Hulk Hogan cosplay is actually quite impressive! Oh, wait, that’s a girl, and we’re thinking that’s her actual hair. Why? Just, why?

DIY Taco Bell Burrito Costume:

We have a few questions for the creator of this DIY wonder. One, why did you want to be a Taco Bell burrito for Halloween? Two, were those clean or used wrappers? And, finally, we just want to know if while making this costume you felt the urge to dumpster dive for supplies in the Taco Bell parking lot?

DIY Ham Costume:

If you have to write the name of your costume on your costume, just so people know what you are… you should probably rethink the costume.

DIY Alcohol and Cigarettes Costumes:

A bottle of whiskey and a pack of cigarettes for a father and child combo costume. What did the mother go as? Our guess is probably something to do with Breaking Bad’s meth lab.

How to Throw a Great Gatsby Party

Between this evening's premiere of "The Great Gatsby," and the recent popularity of shows and films set in the 1920s like HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" and 2012 Oscar winner "The Artist," we figured many of you would like to try throwing a 1920s/Great Gatsby themed party of your own! That's right- Leo DiCaprio doesn't get to have ALL the fun. With our ideas and tips for selecting the right clothes, music, decorations, drinks, food, and activities, you'll have no trouble throwing a bash that Gatsby himself would be proud of!

COSTUMES

WOMEN

The easiest way to set the scene for such a party would be through choosing right clothes. The 1920s were revolutionary for women's style, so your attire as well as that of your guests should reflect that distinct style!

  • In dresses, the waistline was lowered to the hips, hemlines were raised, and corsets were thrown out for the first time in hundreds of years. Discarded corsets were now replaced with girdles or absolutely no support at all. Having a boyish figure was valued in this era; many women tried to have flat chests, bobbed their hair, and started to wear trousers.

  • To accessorize, women would wear fashionable headbands, cloche hats, and long strands of beads. Dress shoes had a small heel, and would end below the ankle.

HOW TO GET THE LOOK

HalloweenCostumes.com has a wide variety of costumes for adult or tame parties.  For the more adult parties, you can slip into something sexy like this costume:

Flashy Flapper Costume

Women's Flashy Flapper Costume

  • If your party is a little more family friendly, you can get a tamer outfit like what Daisy Buchanan might wear.  Both dresses will work perfectly for the event you are attending, and will surely have people asking where you got your costume! Don’t forget to include a long string of pearls, bobbed wig, and feathered headband

Flirty Flapper Wig

Flirty Flapper Wig

  • Another way to dress the part could be looking in your own closet! Sleeveless dresses with a lower waistline and sequins or beading will do the trick.  If you have small, black pumps and a long pearl necklace, you're well on your way to a complete costume.

1920s Style Dress

  • If you can’t find everything in your closet, you could always try the neighborhood thrift store. Thrift stores dresses are quite ideal since you won’t feel as bad about editing them as you might if you had paid full price for a dress from a store.  You can also find neat headbands, cheap jewelry, and shoes at a thrift store

Ivory Gatsby Dress

  • And of course, ladies, don't forget to try a fun 1920s inspired make up look! Why not give this simple but impactful style a try:

MEN

Women's clothing styles weren't the only ones undergoing changes in the 1920s- fellas, you've got to look the part as well!

  • Men still wore suits, but their suit coats were now shortened and longer suit coats went out of fashion. Try finding a loose suit coat and pair it with trousers, a nice cotton button-up shirt, and a matching vest.

  • For the tie, one with longer and wider proportions would do, but a bow-tie would be best.

  • Wing-tipped shoes were quite popular in that time period, and thin socks would've been worn with them. Men regularly wore hats, the most popular styles being fedoras and newsboy caps.

HOW TO GET THE LOOK

This dapper getup is a black, pin-stripe suit and comes complete with pocket square, tie, and fedora:

Mafia Gangster Costume

Men's Mafia Gangster Costume

  • Like women, men  can find what they’re looking for in their closet or borrow from a friend.  The best type of suit would be a pin-stripe, three-piece suit.  Wing-tipped shoes are not a necessity, but if you have them, wear them! Many people own fedoras, so that would be a perfect accessory to add. If not, they're very affordable online.

Fedora Gangster Hat

  • Again, thrift stores can also be a great place to find a cheap suit.  If you have the time, consider getting  it tailored to make it perfect for your body.  That way even after the party you'll have a sharp suit to wear all the time! Don't forget to check out their shoe section as well- often times they're full of vintage styles.

MUSIC

To set the mood one must have the right music, but this largely depends on who will be at your party. For a more adult crowd you can play dirty blues singers, like Lucille Bogan or Bo Carter. If you want to keep it a little more clean for a family-friend bash, you can pick up a copy of the Boardwalk Empire soundtrack, or some Annette Hanshaw and Bessie Smith CDs. You can find most of these artists on Spotify and Pandora, too, so hook up some speakers to your computer and stream away. No one needs to know you're not actually playing records through a phonograph- our little secret!

DECORATIONS

Another way to channel the mood of the 1920s is through the use of decorations. Gatsby himself threw some amazing parties. Here are a few ideas we got straight from the book:

  • “...Enough colored lights make a Christmas tree of Gatsby's enormous garden.” Pick up some Christmas lights and string them around the tops of your wall or along some fencing if it is an outdoor affair.

  • “...a bar with a real brass rail was set up...” Make your own bar and display your liquor! This was Prohibition after-all, where disregard for the law was made classy. If you like, you could even make your own labels for your liquor bottles to make them look more rustic.

Old Fashioned Liquor Label

BEVERAGES

This leads us to the types of drinks you can offer at your party. During Prohibition, mixed drinks became more popular in an attempt to mask the taste of alcohol that seemed to be even more prevalent in bootlegged liquor.

  • Other than serving just whiskey on the rocks, try offering mint juleps, gin rickeys, and various other prohibition cocktails. If you really want to make it feel like an authentic 1920s/Great Gatsby party, snag some moonshine (Or the closest thing to it, Everclear). You can even prop the liquor bottles in wooden crates for an added rustic touch!

  • For family friendly parties, some non-alcoholic drinks you can serve would be Shirley Temples (Prohibition did go into the 1930s, when she rose to fame), glasses of Coca-Cola, coffee, ginger ale, or chilled milk.  You could even make a milkshake bar with strawberry, chocolate, or vanilla options. Yum!

FOOD

Now to line your stomach, you might want to offer some food for your guests. Gatsby provided “...glistening hors d'oeurve, spiced baked hams crowded against salads of harlequin designs and pastry pigs and turkeys....” We're not insisting you go all out and roast a spiced ham, but it would be nice to have some finger foods and appetizers.

ACTIVITIES

  • While your guests arrive you can have music playing, while showing a 1920s silent film, like "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari", any Charlie Chaplin film, or a more recent release like "The Artist". Having a silent movie playing allows outgoing guests the chance to converse and mingle, while pleasing more shy guests as well. They can watch part of the film and slowly branch out by discussing the movie.

  • Other than playing poker, checkers, or chess during your party, another way to get your guests involved is by playing charades.  You can have it be 1920s themed clues to make it even more difficult for your guests!

  • After a few cocktails when party-goers get the urge to dance, you may want to have a tutorial handy for how to do the Charlston! This was an extremely popular dance step in the twenties and it's every bit as fun and simple today as it was back then! This one is even stylized in black and white:

Have fun all you gangster guys and fierce flapper gals, and let us know how your party turned out in the comments section!

We Went to C2E2: Costume Pic Roundup!

Things have changed quite a bit since the last time I wrote for the blog.  For one thing, I no longer make my living by hiding under a bridge and collecting tolls from frightened peasants as they attempt to pass (see this previous blog post for reference). Granted, a lot of that has to do with the fact that the city demolished my bridge...

Luckily, halloweencostumes.com recognized my ability to strike fear into the heart of my fellow man and I’m now the HR guy.  Wait…What?  Oh well, as long as my cruel reign of terror is allowed to continue, all will be fine. I may have "gone corporate," but I can guarantee you that one thing hasn’t changed: my love of comic conventions!  As a result, I left my cube and traveled to Illinois for the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo, also known as C2E2!

(I personally think they were trying to get rid of HR so they could set up a scooter jousting tournament after I told them it was too unsafe.)  Oh well, if it means more conventions for me then they can joust all they want. Anyway, since we recently passed the halfway to Halloween mark, convention season has just begun, and we happen to sell costumes, why don’t we share some of my favorite cosplay pictures from C2E2?

 Oh no.  No!  Nonononono.

I’m really the one that has to do this?  Really?

Fine.

Hi everyone, it’s Joe from HR again.  If I had any sort of professional credibility to begin with, it would be gone by the end of this post.  Why?  Because I helped to facilitate this: a collection of the filthiest pickup lines that Captain Kirk could (and would!) use to bed yet another hot, green alien.

Star Trek Green Alien

Only included for reference, obviously.[Source]

We figure that the best way to celebrate tonight's release of the new film, Star Trek: Into Darkness, is by paying tribute to the original Kirk – Shatner himself.  So without any further ado, I present to you the greatest things that the greatest Starfleet Captain would say to get you to get his beam up.

Oh boy, it’s starting already.

Classic and classy.  Just the way Kirk is supposed to work.

Captain's Log Kirk Meme

This is going downhill quickly.

Oh boy.  How about we have a little musical break to cut the tension?  This one should diffuse the tension.  Lady (I assume that one female, at most, has made it this far) and gentlemen, I present the greatest musician of this or any era, combined with the second greatest singer for Black Flag, as interpreted by Russian puppets:

I think that might have just made it worse.

Klingons Kirk Meme

I have difficulty believing he tested negative for anything.

Just Happy to See You Kirk Meme

He will battle you with it too.

Tractor Beams Kirk Meme

Ahh…This one wasn’t so bad.  Kind of sweet actually.

Holodeck Meme

Oh, you charmer.

Romulan Kirk Meme

Please don’t be like me and understand this reference.  For your own sake.

Tribbles Kirk Meme

I bet Tribbles are soft and fluffy.

Phased My Pants Kirk Meme

Alright, that’s it.  Shut it down.

So what do you think?  Are there any more pickup lines that you think that Kirk could use?  Put them in the comments below OR hit us up on Twitter @FunCostumes, with the hashtag #kirkpickuplines.

You know what?  How about just one more musical number before we go?

Uh.Maze.Ing. AMAZING!!

Star Trek: Into Darkness comes out today, May 16th, 2013, so be sure to pick up classic Star trek costumes to wear to the premier here: http://www.halloweencostumes.com/star-trek-costumes.html

Joe Vampire secretly thinks that Picard is the superior captain from the superior show.  He also owns three William Shatner albums (one is a split with Leonard Nimoy).  That’s not a joke.

Do you remember cross stitch? You know, where you use embroidery thread on fabric, make a bunch of tiny little x stitches, and it ends up being an awesome pattern that you can display as art? Well, if Pinterest is any indication, cross stitch is BACK: patterns are popping up everywhere!

Of course we love the return of this trend since it’s a super fun way to display our love of all things nerdy! So, we took some of our favorite characters like Marty McFly and Mario, and turned them into cross stitch patterns. What could be better than that? If they were free for you to download and use? They are!

What you'll need to get started:

  • Cross stitch fabric (which can usually be found at your local craft supply store).
  • An embroidery hoop (small or large depending on your preference).

It's a bird...It's a plane...It's Superman! Well, not Superman himself, but it IS a super awesome Superman infographic.

2013 is THE year for everyone's favorite Man of Steel. Between it being the hero's 75th anniversary, and Man of Steel hitting the silver screen on June 14th, we're bursting with red and blue excitement! Thankfully, we were able to use our energy for good rather than evil, and create a visual guide to the evolution of Superman's iconic emblem.

We cover the logo's various incarnations in both comics and popular culture, starting with its first appearance in 1938 and culminating with what the famed "S" will look like when Henry Cavill reveals it on on his Clark Kent-ee chest in theaters in a little over a week!

Being a member of the Targaryen clan is not an easy thing, especially if you’re the last surviving member- talk about pressure! As that last member, Daenerys Targaryen is on a mission to reclaim the Iron Throne for her family’s legacy. With the help of the Dothraki and her maturing dragons Dany will do all she can to gain control of the Seven Kingdoms, and she’ll do it looking fabulously fierce all the while.

If you want to try your own hand at looking like the Mother of Dragons, here are some helpful items you can combine to channel your inner Silver Queen:

The Dress

The first thing that any royal lady needs is a dress. If you’re a royal lady from the continent of Essos, you’ll need something that will feel comfortable in any temperate to sub tropic climate. This Spartan Queen Costume will allow you to command your Unsullied and train your dragons while still allowing for a welcome breeze.

The Shoes

Given that the world of Game of Thrones doesn’t currently have any Jimmy Choo locations, Dany will have to make do with something a bit more modest like these Goddess Sandals.

The Hair

One of the things that Daenerys is known for is her long, nearly white blonde hair. If you lack light locks, no worries! This Golden Goddess Wig will give you a similar hair color and style to the Mother of Dragons. It comes with one pre-braided piece but you can easily add more braids yourself, like we did!

The Accessories

If your dragons are napping, then wearing this metal dragon armband is a surefire way to quickly display your affiliation with those fiery fellows. Most moms simply carry photos of their children, but that simply won’t do for you, Khaleesi!

Dragon Bracelet

As a Mother of Dragons, it’s of rather central importance that you have, well, a dragon! This bag will serve as a great scaly friend when you go out. Sling it over your shoulder to keep your hands free while you make your way to Westeros to reclaim King’s Landing. Fashion AND function!

DIY: Action Comics Superman Costume

Superman has had a lot of looks over the years but one of his most recent was when he ditched the spandex and tights for something a little more casual. In a reboot of Action Comics in 2011 it was revealed that one of Superman’s first costumes was a simple look of Clark Kent in a t-shirt and jeans. But to make sure that we knew it was Superman he kept his iconic red cape.

So for this Halloween if you’re looking for a simple Superman costume straight from the pages of DC Comics we can help.

The Suit

Superman t-shirts have existed since what seems like the beginning of time and have come in a billion different colors and designs. But for this costume you’ll want to keep it simple and classic with a blue shirt that features the man of steel’s shield on it. As for the pants all you’ll need is your favorite pair of blue jeans to get the look down.

The Boots

For years Superman wore long red boots to match the rest of his costume but those don’t really work with jeans and a t-shirt. For you Action Comics Superman costume you’ll want to keep things simple with a pair of combat boots so you can leap tall buildings in a single bound in style.

The Cape

Of all of Superman’s costumes he’s had throughout the years very few have ditched the iconic red cape. Just as much as the “S” shield stands as a symbol for the man of steel, the red cape flying in a blue sky also has become a beacon that help is on the way. So to complete your Action Comics Superman costume you’ll need to have the classic cape tied around your neck.

Now since we’re not all from the planet Krypton we have just the accessory to help you out with this bendable crowbar.

Cosplay Collage from 2013

People express themselves in many different ways. Some sculpt, some draw, some compose, some sing, and some… design intricate costumes based on existing characters and wear them around, dazzling and mystifying spectators.

With cosplay, what often starts as a hobby may quickly evolve into something else entirely. For some, it has even become a livelihood, either through selling handmade products or being discovered by companies and hired on to become the  official cosplayer for a particular character!

What IS A Cosplayer?

Cosplay is a term derived from “Costume Play”, and is used to describe those who dress up in costume, most often as characters from Japanese animation (anime) or video games, among many other things. The possibilities are as numerous as there are movie and TV characters, and the reactions to these ensembles can range from “well…you did your best” to “holy-! How did you manage that?!”

Don’t believe me? Well I’ve picked out a few that you’re bound to enjoy. These jaw-dropping, gorgeous costumes are often hand-made by their dedicated wearers, and presented at conventions across the world.

Neal Bockhaut

Final Fantasy Cosplay

Neal Bockhaut as Cecil Harvey from Final Fantasy IV

While some make their costumes by hand with cardboard and whatever else they can find, Neal Bockhaut, or NealBomBad on deviantart.com used his own method; 3D printing. 3D printers are growing in popularity and after seeing what they can do, I’m not shocked to see why! He says it took over 500 hours of printing time and many more spent priming and sanding to strengthen the plastic pieces. This amazing picture features not a figurine or game graphic, but Neal actually inside his costume. It’s Cecil Harvey, Dark Knight from Final Fantasy IV, and it’s very impressively done.

Ex-Shadow

Vash the Stampede Cosplay

Ex-Shadow as Vash the Stampede from Trigun

Kyle, aka Ex-Shadow, is a 27 year old guy whose hobbies include art, video games, and anime. What better way is there to combine those interests than cosplay?

He has made many costumes, including his favorite character, Vash the Stampede, from the popular show Trigun (which used to air on Adult Swim years ago). He runs a Facebook page that he updates with his latest costumes, including the status of his works in progress, which offers newbies great insight into how to make their own. You can give it a look here!

Malindachan

Link Cosplay Melindachan

Malindachan as Link from Legend of Zelda

This 24 year old has been cosplaying since 2004, and made a name for herself quickly. Malindachan attended a convention for the first time in 2007 and quickly found herself sought after and invited to more. She frequently wins awards for her costumes and participation in skits.

She has done a lot of big name titles, including Kingdom Hearts, Legend of Zelda, and Final Fantasy, and looks great in every single one. Sometimes it’s really hard to pick a piece to showcase! But I finally decided on her Link from the Legend of Zelda, with the awesome nature backdrop. With a strong interest in wigs, she offers visitors a deviantART page with lots of tutorials and tips.

Yaya Han

League of Legends Cosplay

Yaya Han as Fiora from League of Legends

It is entirely possible to turn cosplay into a career, as proven by Yaya Han, a well-known figure in the Costume Play world. She’s often invited to conventions to run panels and speak to fans about her work and technique. She mixes things up with a combination of existing characters and original work, showcasing her talent in every single piece, including this one of Fiora from League of Legends.

Kyosti Kallio

zombie iron man cosplay

Kyosti Kallio as Zombie Iron Man

A lot of these costumes have been perfectly accurate down to the last little detail, but that’s definitely not a requirement. I’ve seen steampunk Link (Legend of Zelda) and twisted Disney princesses galore, but this a particularly interesting one.

Kyosti Kallio put a little twist on Iron Man and thought about what would happen if he were to be infected by a zombie virus. Well, the result is pretty cool.

Mike La Jute Blanche

Cool Predator cosplay

Mike La Jute Blanche as The Predator from Predator

Can you believe this is not a movie prop? It’s Mike La Jute Blanche, a French cosplayer who is simply amazing. He’s also been sighted as an strikingly accurate Piccolo from Dragonball, green skinned and all, and has been rumored to rip out people’s spines as a Mortal Combat player. He even keeps a spine prop around for pictures!

Layze Michelle

Zelda Cosplay

Laahmichelle as Princess Zelda from Twilight Princess

Sometimes what impresses me most are the locations people find to actually take their pictures, and this is a wonderful example. Here we find Twilight Princess’s Princess Zelda in her natural habitat of a castle. Laahmichelle is only 19 years old and lives in Brazil, showing us another amazing case of cosplay from around the world.

Melanie Colley

zant zelda cosplay

Melanie Colley as Zant from Twilight Princess

I seem to be going on a Legend of Zelda spree, but I can’t help it with all these amazing costumes to present! Melanie Colley, otherwise known as shinigami714, leaves me no choice but to show off this highly detailed Zant costume, which won best in show and best workmanship at Anime North 2013. The mask and blades are simply wonderful, and the makeup gives it the perfect finishing touch; definitely deserving of a few contest wins!

S-seith

Assassin's Creed Costume

S-seith as Edward Kenway from Assassin's Creed

Sticking with video games—but at least veering to a different title—we find ourselves staring in awe at this amazing Assassin’s Creed character. Pierre, a 23 year old from France, portrays Edward Kenway perfectly. The only change he deems necessary is perhaps a little more of a weathered look to the leather. An assassin is known to get his hands a little dirty, after all! He has more pictures featured on his deviantART page, which you can visit here: http://s-seith.deviantart.com

Linda Le

Kratos Costume for Girls

Linda Le as Kratos from God of War

It's Kratos, the God of War… or shall we say Goddess! Sometimes girls want to dress as guys, and vice versa, and there’s nothing stopping them! Often they turn out even more amazing than the original, and VampBeauty, or Linda Le, gives it her all in her portrayal of the God of War as a female.

Nebulaluben

Nebulaluben as Tali'Zorah vas Normandy from Mass Effect

Mass Effect has some pretty intricate designs but that doesn’t stop determined artists from pursuing their craft! Nebulaluben really struts her stuff as Tali'Zorah vas Normandy. Some editing was done in the background, putting an interesting twist and extra emphasis upon the character without actually changing the costume itself, making it look even more spectacular.

Keruuu

Raiden Costume

Keruuu as Raiden from Metal Gear Rising

This picture was shot in Singapore, where keruuu was able to find an abandoned warehouse to serve as the perfect setting for his Raiden costume (from Metal Gear Rising). Born in North Carolina but currently living in Singapore, Kelton is really putting his Fine Arts degree to good use, creating costumes and props of supreme quality. This costume is perfect from head to toe...and from metal jaw to bolts.

Neko-Tin

Final Fantasy Costume

Neko-Tin as Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII

Neko-tin is a Russian cosplayer who has been fine-tuning her craft with numerous costumes of varying depth. She proves that not every character has to be overly complex. Some are more simplistic, but each one looks just as cool when done properly and presented with confidence and style! And she definitely looks stylish here as Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII.

Rick Boer

Snake from Metal Gear

Rick Boer as Snake from Metal Gear

Rick Boer, found online as RBF-productions-NL, offers one of the most accurate versions of Snake from Metal Gear that I’ve ever seen. He’s in his mid-twenties and married with a child. He also teaches during the week and studies biology, yet still has time for his side hobby of costume making. This looks a little higher quality than just "side hobby" work to me! But it proves you don’t have to be a professional or have an art degree to produce highly coveted costumes.

Ivy Cosplay

Final Fantasy DIY Costume

Ivy Cosplay as Freya from Final Fantasy XII

I just can’t get over how breathtaking things look when enhanced by a fitting background, like this picture of Freya from Final Fantasy XII presented by the mind and hands behind Ivycosplay, a young woman named Giulia from Italy. She not only makes cosplay costumes for personal use, but has found a unique way to make a living from it: she offers commissions, meaning she’ll consider requests for costumes and possibly custom make one for you!

Kudrel-Cosplay

Princess Mononoke Cosplay

Kudrel-Cosplay as a Forest Spirit from Princess Mononoke

Humans don’t always have to dress as humanoid characters. They can mix it up by doing a “gijinka”, or a human personification of a non-human creature. This is commonly seen with Pokémon cosplay, but can be demonstrated in several other areas such as with the deer-like Forest Spirit from Princess Mononoke. This really takes some creativity to accomplish, and Kudrel-Cosplay meets the challenge with flying colors.

She is currently using her growing cosplay fame to promote other projects too, like an Etsy shop online. She lives in Canada but since she began cosplaying in 2004, she has taken to traveling to conventions to compete in contests. She loves to dress up because of the challenge that creating the perfect costume can present and the fun that the end result brings.

Courtney Armstrong

Pokemon Cosplayer

Courtney Armstrong as Zapdos from Pokémon

Since I mentioned Pokémon, let’s continue with an original favorite from the first games. Can you tell which one this is? Hint: It’s Zapdos. Courtney Armstrong, a 23 year old North Carolina native, is a member of the D20 girls and goes to several conventions a year, often dressing in three or more costumes per con. She already has ten conventions on her list this year! Plus, she’ll be running panels and helping with events at each one. That’s what the D20 girls do; they attend various events, help out, and try to foster a positive image of female gamers.

Guagua

Cat Costume

Guagua as Hibari from Hitman Reborn

And now for something completely different, our last featured cosplayer is none other than a cat named Guagua. We often stumble on whacky trends emerging from the East and this is no exception. Chinese cat owner Toshiya86 celebrated her pet’s birthday by dressing it up in costume. These aren’t typical costumes, though…they involve cardboard, a drawing, and a hole that the cat’s head is inserted into. The end result is the cat’s head on a tiny cartoon body. Adorable, a little odd, and maybe a little mean to some. Pictured is the surprisingly cooperative cat "dressed" as Hibari from Hitman Reborn, complete with a little birdie on his head.

Final Thoughts

So you see, cosplay isn’t only for experts (or humans). You don’t have to have an art degree to participate. Veterans don’t shun newbies, they offer advice. It’s a community that promotes acceptance above all else, where people hug and laugh and pose for pictures, while snacking on Japanese munchies like pocky and Ramune and talking about their favorite TV shows and games. I have attended my local convention four years already, in costume, and I promise it has always been a blast! Any embarrassment that might first be held quickly dissolves away in the lively and fun atmosphere cosplayers create wherever they go.

Monster Student ID Card

Doesn't he have the cutest smile?

Monsters University, the prequel to 2001's massively successful Disney/Pixar film Monsters, Inc., will be hitting theaters on Friday! With all of the media attention focused on Sulley, Mike, and Art lately, the HalloweenCostumes.com Monster was turning into a bit of a "green-eyed monster!" He really wanted to be a part of all the buzz surrounding this new movie, so he applied for a spot at Monsters University. Well, he got in and even received a brand new student ID. Whether you are a fan of the Toy Story movies or have fond childhood memories of playing with little green plastic soldiers, a Green Army Man is an awesomely unique costume idea for Halloween.  HalloweenCostumes.com has an exclusive deluxe green army man that provides the perfect base to get you started (includes helmet, jacket, belt, gloves and pants), and with a few extra steps and key accessories you will have an outfit worthy of the top prize in any costume contest.

The most important (and messiest) step is to get some green makeup to lay as a base on any exposed skin. The costume comes with gloves but does not include a shirt. We would recommend getting a green turtleneck so that you have less surface area to cover in green makeup.

The next step is to accessorize.  There are many army accessories such as combat boots, toy rifles and grenades that are great for adding the extra details to your costume that will make it an award winner.  Much like the hipster shopkeepers in the hit show Portlandia who merely say to "put a bird on it," the DIY trick to making perfect accessories for this green army man costume is to simply "throw some green paint on it!"

Adult Combat Boots- Shop  - then throw some green paint on it!

Rifle Machine Gun- Shop - then throw some green paint on it!

Toy Binoculars- Shop - then throw some green paint on it!

Combat Hero Grenade- Shop - then throw some green paint on it!

The base that the army man is standing on is just regular old cardboard that we (you guessed it...) threw some green paint on!  We have seen some DIYers attach the base right to their boots. For our photo shoot we kept the base unattached, but you can do whichever you prefer.  It definitely ups the costumes "cool factor" but could prove a cumbersome addition if you plan to be bar crawling.

And that's it.  With a little work and a great outfit from HalloweenCostumes.com, you will hands down have one of the best costumes this Halloween. If you are looking to elevate your Halloween night to epic status, get a group together! What could top a whole platoon of Green Army Men arriving at the party? Or, if you are really ambitious, you could throw a blue or red army man into the mix.

Classic Video Game Costume Ideas

Where were you when you first heard the “waka waka waka” from a Pac Man machine or the first time you shot a Hadoken from your digital fists? Every gamer can think of where they were when they first played their favorite game and got lost in a pixelated world. This Halloween you can become a world famous plumber, a speedy hedgehog, or even a warrior who can freeze people with his fists. Here are a few group costume ideas for those looking to show off their deep love of classic video games.

Pac Man

One of the most iconic video game heroes is also one of the first:  Pac Man. This little yellow has been running around mazes munching on little power pellets since 1980. It isn’t all just good times for Pac Man, though,  because he also has to deal with ghosts on a mission to make his day go from good to horrible. Thankfully, Pac Man may come across a super power pellet which grants this hungry fella the ability to chow down on a spooky specter or two.

If you’re looking for a fun way to bring some gamer fun to your group costume this year we have a few options for you with our Pac Man, Inky, Blinky, Pinky, and Clyde costumes, along with a blue power pellet ghost costume.

Super Mario Brothers

“Thank You Mario, But Our Princess is in Another Castle.” Those few words haunt the minds of every classic gamer out there. Who hasn't made a harrowing run through Mushroom Kingdom to Bowser’s castle to save Princess Peach, only to find Toad there telling you you'll have to check out another castle? Ugh.

Mario is a multi-faceted fellow, having tried his hand at go-karting, Olympic sports, a variety of mini-games, and even smashing his fellow Nintendo co-stars. If your interests are similarly diverse, you may want to go on your Halloween adventure dressed as Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and yes, even Toad, in our great Super Mario Brother themed costumes.

Sonic the Hedgehog

If you happen to find yourself in the Green Hill Zone you may notice a flash of blue speed past you. Not to worry, it's just Sonic the Hedgehog racing off to save someone’s day. For years Sonic has been putting a stop to the evil Doctor Robotnik’s plans by using his enviable running and jumping abilities to bring down the doctor's robot army. And like every good hero, he doesn’t do it alone...

Sonic has had the help of his good friends Tails and Knuckles to aid in his quest to keep the animals of the world safe! Your little ones will love getting in on the classic video game fun this year by checking out these great pint-size Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles costumes.

Street Fighter

What is the best way to settle any argument? If you said playing Rock, Paper, Scissors, you're wrong. It's playing a round of Street Fighter.

Since the ground breaking game Street Fighter 2 came out in 1991 people have been button mashing and Hadokening as their favorite world warriors ever since. Whether you’re playing as Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, or any of the other classic characters everyone has their go-to fighter (and their go-to method for wrestling the remote away from anyone who tries to claim them). This Halloween, seize the chance to recreate your favorite in-game moves in real live, by picking up one of our official Street Fighter costumes!

Mortal Kombat

In 1992 a video game came out that become a hot topic of conversation in social circles ranging from kids in the arcade, to politicians on Capitol Hill. Mortal Kombat was especially newsworthy because it was a fighting game that had an amount of blood and gore never before seen in the digital world. But what has given this game series lasting power isn’t its simulated violence- it's the legendary characters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Raiden.

Now you can look just like the greatest warriors to ever take part in Mortal Kombat with these great costumes. We also carry sizzling fashions of new comers Mileena and Kitana so you’re group of 'kombatants' will be 'komplete!'

Tomb Raider

Miss Lara Croft has recently gone through the reboot update machine and come out with a new look. But those of us who have been playing video games for many moons, recall her original 1996 outfit most fondly. Lara’s signiture short shorts/tank top combo harkens from a time when you could go on a jungle adventure and never spare a second thought about getting scraped or bruised.

So if you’re looking to go as this classic archaeologist with an attitude, we have the perfect costume for you along with a double pistol set to complete your tough girl look. We also carry great mummy costumes so you’ll have a few scary someones to chase down this Halloween!
