April 14^th, 2015 will mark the next milestone in a 23 year journey of the iconic fighting game Mortal Kombat, with the release of Mortal Kombat X . Since Mortal Kombat first hit arcades and home systems in 1992, it has been the subject of both ravenous fandom and intense scrutiny. No characters are more iconic than the two ninjas, Sub-Zero and Scorpion. As two of the original characters in the series, Sub-Zero and Scorpion are as old as the franchise itself - meaning they’re probably older than some of you reading this! The two ninjas started out as color-swapped versions of the same character and have since evolved to have their own unique looks, back stories, and relationships. So why don’t you ‘GET OVER HERE’ and check out this trek back through the last 23 years of Mortal Kombat.

May 2015, The Avengers take to the silver screen for the second time in Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron. All of the Avengers return with new toys and upgrades from the previous films, courtesy of Tony Stark- and none of those upgrades are more prevalent than Iron Man's Hulkbuster Armor. Featured in many of the previews for the film, this titantic armor is designed by Bruce Banner and Tony Stark to subdue Banner's alter-ego The Hulk. In the comics, Stark has a long history of building armors to speficially combat some of the Marvel Universe's most powerful friends and foes, and most of these armors are huge, powerful, and come with plenty of firepower. In celebration of the return of Earth's Mightest Heroes to the big screen, we wanted to take a look back at the Busters Iron Man has used in his career.

If there's one thing we can say about the staff at HalloweenCostumes.com, it's that we are bona fide Star Wars maniacs. So in preparation for the year of Star Wars (it's not too early to grant that title, is it?) we've decided to channel some of our pent up excitement into reliving some oh-so-sweet nostalgia from the trilogy that started it all. First task? We’re tackling a guide to our favorite original character's costumes. We've only had a hint of what they're going to look like in The Force Awakens, so we figured it sure couldn't hurt to brush up on the details from the original trilogy. Seriously, wouldn't these be the cutest way to tell Mom how much you love her?! It looks like our favorite characters from the movies found our Halloween costumes for kids section so they could present their cards in an extra special way. How will you go the extra mile for your Mom? Leave us some ideas below!

Motherhood is not always as glamourous as movies and television make it out to be. Our moms work hard, and sometimes have to forego things like hair, makeup, and nice clothes for comfort, ease, and mobility in the 'real world'. Nothing wrong with that! But what if motherhood was as glitzy and glamorous as Hollywood and television make it out to be? We wanted to explore that idea, so we got one of the most glamourous women in history, Marilyn Monroe, to show us what everyday glamour might look like on this Mother's Day.

"Mom, you said there would be pictures in this book."

"I don't know what mom is looking at, but it's not nearly as interesting as this dough."

"How many people does it take to vaccum a floor? In this dress, four."

Mad Max: Fury Road premieres on May 15th, 2015. The things we know: Max will be in the desert, looking serious and stressed out; there will be lots of cars, bikes, and trucks careening through the landscape, possibly on fire; and the costume design is going to be on point. We've spent basically our whole lives watching and rewatching the original Mad Max films, so to prepare for the fourth installment, we've created our own gear, complete with a step-by-step tutorial. This isn't a specific Max cosplay, but instead inspired by the baddies' looks in the original films. Our DIY borrows design ideas from several different characters, and the look can easily vary based on available time, affordability, ease of tracking down costume bits, and ease of use with little to no modification.

Source Out Appropriate Equipment

Shoulder Pads

A wide assortment of sports gear was repurposed as post-apocalyptic combat armor for the Mad Max films, the most iconic being football shoulder pads. For our female costume, we are using late 1990’s youth XL sized shoulder pads. 

• Rawlings Crusader series and Raider shoulder pads were the primary pads used in The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome. However, these can be exceedingly difficult to track down, and given their age and possible condition, the vinyl straps holding the pads together have often degraded well past a usable state.
• You obviously want to be able to wear these as part of a costume, so they need to be able to handle a little wear and tear. Using more modern shoulder pads is perfectly acceptable, just be mindful of their shape and design; contemporary sports gear construction can differ significantly from older gear.

Other Body Armor

The other body armor in the Mad Max films was comprised of a combination of hockey, baseball, and lacrosse pads. 

• We picked up hockey shin guards and youth soccer shin guards (for use as forearm armor). 
• Consideration was also given to baseball catcher’s shin guards, which were utilized heavily in The Road Warrior as arm guards. In the end we decided to go with the soccer shin guards over the catcher’s guards due to how easy they were to repurpose as arm protectors with few / no necessary alterations.

Where To Buy

Used sporting goods stores, like Play It Again Sports, are excellent for tracking down older and cheaper gear. eBay and other online sources can be helpful too. 

Crafting Supplies

Supplies Used: Several cans of flat matte black enamel spray paint (any brand), some extra sandpaper, and a roll of painter’s tape. 

• Make sure you grab matte finish paint. This is extremely important! You want a dull, drab finish. 
• Optional: Flat matte clear finish spray paint as a primer coat for any vinyl bits, and newspaper to help with masking off areas of the pads. You can find these supplies at just about any hardware or hobby shop.

Prep & Paint Your Gear

1. Before you begin to paint, the surface area of the gear needs to be conditioned so it will accept paint better. 

• With the extra fine sand paper, gently sand all plastic areas of the pads that you intend to paint. Do not sand any of the softer vinyl areas. Note that if you choose a coarser grit sandpaper, you will heavily gouge or scratch the plastic.
• Optional: If possible, remove any of the interior padding of the pads. This is not necessary but it will help cut down on the masking process. If you are not able to or do not want to bother with this, just mask off larger areas of the pads that you do not intend to paint with painter’s tape and newspaper.

2. Optional: The direction of this step is really dependent on what you want to do or how much vinyl you have to paint. If you don’t have any vinyl you want to repaint, you can skip ahead to step three of prepping and painting your gear. If you have to deal with a lot of vinyl strapping that is not black or is too glossy, use newspaper and painter’s tape to mask off the areas around the vinyl portions, leaving the vinyl exposed.

• In a well-ventilated area, apply a few coats of matte clear finish spray paint to the exposed vinyl pieces. Be careful when you are spray painting: a few well controlled coats can help to avoid runs in the paint. 
• Allow the clear matte paint to dry and set for a few days and then remove the painter’s tape and any other material used to mask. Your vinyl bits will now accept the black paint better. 
• The shoulder pads we used for this particular project did not have any vinyl that needed to be repainted, but we have used the aforementioned process in the past with great success.

3. Use painter's tape to mask off any areas that you do not want to paint. The shoulder pads that we are using have black vinyl around the neck collar that was naturally worn from previous use. We really didn't need to repaint it, so we chose to mask over it. We also decided to mask over some of the shoulder pad's metal hardware; since it was already partially rusted and weathered, it fit in well with the worn, post-apocalyptic motif of the costume.

4. Finally, the fun part! With the gear prepped (sanded and masked), you are now ready to apply the flat black matte spray paint. 

• Apply several light coats. Spray another layer as soon as the paint looks dry. Repeat this process until no white, or any other undesired color, is showing. 
• Remember not to go overboard with the spray paint so to avoid runs. Don’t panic if you do end up with a few small runs, though! These can easily be sanded out after a day or two once the coat has set. You can then reapply another coat. 

Assemble Gear & Create Costume

After the gear has been painted satisfactorily and the paint has been allowed to set for a few days, remove any masking material and reassemble any padding that was dismantled. In our case, we had to reinsert the interior padding in the shoulder pads.

As far was what you wear under all the armor and gear, it's basically up to you! We went with a monochromatic theme - just remember when you pick out your outfit, that you want to mimic the look and feel of the films. (Dreary, dirty, tough.)

• Layer the fishnets and striped stockings on your arms and legs. We tore off the tops of the black and white pieces to give everything ragged edges, and we cut holes in the fishnets, as well.
• The harness looks best if you put it on before the skirt. A charcoal scarf completed the look.
• Hair and makeup: We were inspired by the mohawk styles from the movies, and the eye makeup is an homage to Pris from Blade Runner. (We couldn't help it!) Dramatic is better!

Increasingly popular at Cons, spotted at costume parties, and shared on the internet, is the idea of doing gender swapped costumes of pop-culture characters. A gender swap is the act of taking iconic characters (or just fan-favorites) and transforming them into their opposite gender. This is an especially great idea for couples who love classic characters but still want to add their own creative twist. If you're new to this concept but it sounds like something you may want to attempt, we have prepared a quick list of 5 do’s and don’ts to keep in mind while creating the perfect gender-swapped couples costume!

1. DON’T: Just put a bow on it.

The 80s were, among many things, the decade of the video game, and chief among them was Pac-Man. What did developers do when they wanted to reach a larger target audience? They created Ms. Pac-Man. What’s the difference between Mrs. Pac-Man and Pac Man? The bow she wears. To show you the silliness of this idea, we put a bow on another classic arcade game:

2. DO: Same-gender gender swap

So you and your best pal want to go to a con or a party, and don’t know what to go as. Don’t be afraid to do a same-gender team and swap them to match your own. Like Batman and Robin, but don’t want to be Harley Quinn or Batgirl? Maybe you’re a big fan of Elsa and Anna from Frozen, but find yourself on the more masculine side of things? Anything is possible!

Had the movie played out like this, we're sure there would have been much less meddling.

3. DO: Do the group thing

Ensemble casts are the perfect place to pick a couple’s costume from, and if you have several couples in your Halloween group, you could gender swap the whole LOT! Superhero teams, sitcoms, cartoons, and movies all provide great source material. So dive deep into your ensemble casts, find you and your significant other’s favorite characters, and swap 'em up.

I would gladly pay you Tuesday for a can of spinach today.

4. DON’T: Jump the Gun

The internet really is a wonderful place, perpetually pumping out all sorts of fun "first looks," teasers, and tidbits about upcoming TV and film releases. While putting together your perfect gender-swap couple costume you may be tempted to jump right into these juicy teasers and tidbits and use them as your swap-spiration. It might be best to avoid this, in case the leaked info turns out to be false, or the results are just too freaky...

We're definitely excited to see the new Joker and Harley Quinn in "Suicide Squad," but these swapped characters may be even more interesting!

5. DO: Double Gender Swap/Swap Back

Sometime these franchises get it right and perform a solid gender swap for us—see: Finn/Jake & Fionna/Cake from adventure time. We give kudos to them. Don’t be afraid to experiment and break the mold...they did it well, but you can do it better! Swap them back!

For a movie that doesn't come out for over a year, Suicide Squad has sure been finding its way into internet headlines an awful lot lately! One day it was a short clip of the Batmobile screeching through closed off Canadian streets, one day it was a paparazzi pic of Jared Leto sipping a latte between takes as The Joker, and one day, one glorious day, it was an album of on-set images featuring Margot Robbie in FULL ON Harley Quinn mode.

We couldn't be more obsessed with the "really modern, yet still classic, very intimidating, and obviously super sexy" new take on Harley Quinn's look, and as hard as that may have been to follow, we're sure we're not alone in singing its praises! SO: do you want to try this look for yourself? Do you want to dress like Suicide Squad Harley for Halloween 2015? Here are all of the goodies we used to assemble our DIY Harley, save for the signature makeup!

Those are the basic elements you'll need! Of course we're lucky enough to have access to a custom t-shirt creator, which we used to print "Daddy's Lil Monster" text atop this blank red and white raglan tee. You could easily achieve a similar effect with Sharpies. The high heel boots, leather belt, hair extensions, fingerless glove, and studded choker, were ready to go straight out of the packaging, but the other items needed some roughing up:

• Fishnet Stockings: Use either your hands or a pair of scissors to create some rips and tears. 
• Shoulder Harness: Remove the additional cross-body strap, rub with sand paper, and add spikes and studs.
• Gold Wrist Cuff: Rub with sand paper, and poke gold nails through.

DIY Harley Quinn Baseball Bat

Sometimes Harley has a hammer (which you may find DIY details for HERE if you prefer), but in Suicide Squad, she's going "batty!" (Yasss worked in a pun.) A costume without accessories is greater than or equal to 50% less fun, so fashion yourself a bat! Here's what you'll need to make our version:

• Baseball Bat
• Letter Stencils (We just used an exacto knife and cut letters out of paper)
• Red Acrylic Paint
• Black Electrical Tape
• White Athletic Tape
• Sharpies (Black, Blue, and Red) 

This craft is quite straightforward once you have gathered the supplies. Sponge brush the red paint over "GOOD NIGHT" letter stencils, create a diamond pattern with Sharpies, section off the handle portion with athletic tape, and scrawl your favorite Harley Quinn quote in black Sharpie at the top! This is what we went with:

You lock up the weirdos, the crooks and the geeks!
Yer a hero to all of the boys in blue -
But this time, PUDDIN, the joke's on YOU!

DIY Harley Quinn Wrist Cuffs

In many of the Margot Robbie set photos, we see that he Harley is wearing one golden, spiked wrist cuff. Now isn't the time to take a shortcut on details, so grab a cuff, some sandpaper, some nails, and a hammer, and get to crafting!

To take the pristine gold finish off of our Roman Wrist Cuff, simply rub the cuff with gritty sandpaper!

The final step is creepy, but easy. Poke nails through the cuff and secure the nail heads on the inside with a hot glue gun. The cuff material isn't thick, so you should be able to poke the nails through by hand like we did!

DIY Harley Quinn Shoulder Holster

This is another awesome and quick DIY that will really bring your Harley Quinn Suicide Squad look to the next level! We simply cut off the cross-body strap from our "Gangster Gun Holster," and liberally attached a pack of multi-sized silver studs.

Temporary Harley Quinn Tattoos

Did you know that you can buy temporary tattoo paper at most craft stores? You just print whatever image you like onto that tattoo paper using a standard printer, and seriously, it becomes a temporary tattoo! Did your world just change? Take a breath. Grab some water. Then come back and keep reading. We created the custom sheet of tattoos below, which you are welcome to use for your Cosplay:

1. Joy

Even in the unhappiest moments, Joy is the positivity in Riley’s life. She has an innate ability to find optimism in the worst of situations and seizes all of life’s opportunities. Even if Riley is in a pickle, she views it as a small obstacle on the way to something great. Joy is that one happy (annoying?) friend that looks at life as if it were made out of sunshine and rainbows. (And unicorns, definitely unicorns!)

2. Sadness

Sadness is blue, literally! She has a hard time finding the positive in a situation and would be referred to by many millennials as a “Debbie Downer." Unlike Joy, she lacks optimism and would just prefer to sit in the corner and cry it out. Often times, Sadness’ role is misunderstood by the other emotions, but one thing is for certain: she will still be the source of many laughs throughout the movie.

3. Fear

Danger! Everywhere!! ...or so Fear thinks. He is the type that would fear his own reflection. He is Riley’s protector and every decision he makes is to ensure her safety. Sure, he may exaggerate the potential for hazards, but he has Riley’s best interests at heart. If it were up to Fear, Riley would be sitting on a fluffy pillow in bubble wrap, but Fear is a scaredy-cat like that.

4. Anger

Have you ever gotten so angry that you just want to explode? Riley’s Anger is like that all the time, and he could be equated to the likeness of a toddler. His patience level is almost non-existent, he has a tendency to exaggerate, and when something goes amiss, he throws a temper tantrum. Anger is also adamant that Riley be treated fairly at all times and if not, a fiery rage ensues. (Yes, his head actually starts on fire!)

5. Disgust

Disgust is a total diva. She has high standards for Riley and often can come off as conceited. Every situation is approached with the utmost precaution and skepticism to protect Riley. Trust is not something Disgust readily gives away, it has to be earned. Although her teenager-esque attitude is irritating to the other emotions, it is backed by the best of intentions for Riley.

You get Jurassic Wars: An intergalactic adventure 65 million years in the making. In an unprecedented collision between a galaxy far, far, away, and creatures from a time long, long, ago, we bring you 12 completely new dinosaur species, inspired by 12 of the most celebrated characters from the Star Wars franchise. Jurassic era dinos crossed with the likenesses of Star Wars characters!? These mash-ups may just be the best example of Chaos Theory, yet! Right, Dr. Malcolm?

Typical weekday you = At work. Bored. Scroll through go-to blogs in search of fun article to chase away doldrums. Find one! Fluffy puppies! Find second one! Behind-the-scenes info about cool upcoming movie! SHOOT. Only have time for one before important spreadsheet is due. CAN'T PICK BETWEEN PUPPIES AND MOVIES!! SHAKE FIST AND WONDER WHY WORLD IS SO CRUEL!!

Okay deep breaths. That really escalated there. Here's some good news: With "Jurassic Pup," you don't have to make the world's most difficult choice. You can have it all! We took one of 2015's most highly anticipated films and stuck tiny widdle puppies right in it! Specifically, we removed the Velociraptors from 6 iconic Jurassic Park and Jurassic World scenes, and replaced the scary dinos with a puppy dressed AS a dino.

1. Jurassic Park: Raptors in the Kitchen

• Why it's scary with raptors: Being hunted down by not one but TWO ferocious predators in one of the most sacred rooms of all, the room where food is born, is not on anyone's to-do list. This scene is so mentally scarring, we bet everyone that watched it has since (a) tried to sit in their oven to make sure they fit in case of a dinosaur attack, and (b) been terrified after dropping a ladle on the floor. THE RAPTORS WILL HEAR YOU!

• Why it's better with puppies: Two puppies break into the kitchen and are bound and determined to hunt you down. All we have to say to that scenario is yes please! Sign us up. The only reason pooches would want to find the dropped ladle is to lick up whatever yummy food might be left in it!

2. Jurassic Park: Clever Girl

• Why it's scary with raptors: Robert Muldoon is a decorated game hunter, and if there is such a title, the world's foremost Velociraptor wrangler. If HE was caught off guard by the skilled group hunting techniques of the raptors in the jungle, just imagine how the average Joe or Jane would have fared. *Shiver*

• Why it's better with puppies: The only thing better than being stalked by one cute doggy, is being hunted by a pack! We can only hope they all strike at the same time with their puppy kisses.

3. Jurassic Park: Raptor Breath On The Window

• Why it's scary with raptors: Lex and Tim knew very well that the hot, foggy, breath on the kitchen window was not a good thing. What they didn't yet know, was that raptors figured out how to use their dangerous claws to open door handles! Of all the things to be glad to see peering at you through a tiny window, the beady eyes of a Velociraptor ahould be at the very bottom of the list.

• Why it's better with puppies: Can you even imagine a tiny furball face staring at you through a window? Breathing on the glass with it's wet nose, trying to get in? OMG you would run to that door so fast to let him come bounding in. No need to learn to use door handles, pup. We've got you!

4. Jurassic Park: Hatching Baby Raptor

• Why it's scary with raptors: There's just something so creepy about this scene! The eerie music, John Hammond saying "come on then, come on then," talking to the raptor in like..."baby talk," the gooey membrane on the dino's head, eck! The sense of dread is amplified by knowing that this "cute" baby dino will grow up to eat cows in mere seconds.

• Why it's better with puppies: We'd take a page out of Hammond's book and insist on being present at the birth of every creature on the island, too, if the creatures were all puppies (and kitties) (and bunnies). Come on then, come on then! 

5. Jurassic World: Raptor Bike Gang

• Why it's scary with raptors: Riding a motorcycle alongside a pack of raptors. What could possibly go wrong? Meanwhile, the dinosaurs don't even look like they're breaking a sweat and the motorbike is at full throttle, so what happens when these "trained" raptors turn on you and you "must go faster, must go faster? Hmm? THEN WHAT, Chris Pratt?

• Why it's better with puppies: A puppy gang! A gang of puppies! Puppies that have banded together as your allies in a gang! Any way you say it, it's just the cutest thing to picture. Plus, it would be so fun to wear matching biker bandanas and pick out your biker gang name. We call dibs on "Bad to the Bone."

6. Jurassic World: Eyes On Me

• Why it's scary with raptors: When you train normal animals like seals or dogs or dolphins, you hold a treat in your hand for motivation. When you train Velociraptors, you ARE the treat. Cuz, you know, they eat people. So rest assured, Mr. Pratt, when you say "eyes on me," the raptors are definitely looking at you. But they're picturing you in their bellies.

• Why it's better with puppies: If you've ever been to a puppy obedience class, then not much is needed to justify why this scenario, with puppies as opposed to flesh-eating dinos, would be preferable. A whole heap of baby hounds, wanting to please you, wanting to cuddle, wagging their tails, wanting to eat treats...it's a win win win win win situation!
