Super 16: 2016 Movies and TV Shows as Super Nintendo Games

$

0

2016 marks the 25th anniversary of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, which is widely considered one of the best gaming consoles of all time. On this 16-bit system, Nintendo released some of the best games from its biggest franchises like Mario (Super Mario World), Star Fox (Star Fox), and Zelda (The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past) to name a few. Many other iconic games from third party companies like Capcom (Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Mega Man X) Konami (Super Castlevania IV).

2016, for better or worse, has also been known for some high profile movies and TV shows being released. Disney has enjoyed a stellar year with films like Finding Dory, Zootopia, and Captain America: Civil War from Marvel with their only misstep being Alice Through the Looking Glass, the underwhelming sequel to 2010's Alice in Wonderland. With Rogue One: A Star Wars Story set to release in December, Disney might end up with the top 5 highest grossing films of the year! Warner Brothers and DC released a couple films, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, that performed pretty well at the box office, but were poorly received by critics. In television, Game of Thrones returned for a 6th season which some are considering to be the best yet and Netflix debuted Stranger Things, an 80s-style mystery thriller show that immediately became a cultural phenomenon. In celebrating the 25 year anniversary of the SNES, we created 16 games based on movies and TV shows from 2016 for the 16-bit system. Check out the Super 16 below!

1. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

God versus man! Day versus night! Son of Krypton versus Bat of Gotham! Who will win in this battle of good vs….good….vs. evil….vs. monster...then Wonder Woman is there, too. Look, there’s A LOT going on in this game, ok?

2. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

The makers of Super Star Wars are back at it again with the latest entry in the franchise, Super Rogue One. Play as Jyn Erso as you make your way to steal the plans for the Death Star for the Rebel Alliance.

3. Game of Thrones

You thought he was dead, but Jon Snow is back for Game of Thrones VI and things are getting crazy. This game follows the events from season 6 of Game of Thrones leading up to the epic battle between Snow and Ramsey Bolton. There's even a Hodor bonus game!

4. Captain America: Civil War

Are you Team Iron Man or Team Cap? In a year in which superheroes are going up against one another, you can now choose a side to fight on in Captain America: Civil War The Game. Beat all the levels to unlock Giant Man!

5. Ghostbusters

If you’re brave enough, answer the call as Abby, Erin, Holtzmann, or Patty to take to the streets, defeat ghosts, and save the city. This game is a lot of fun and we guarantee it won’t ruin anybody’s childhood.

6. Stranger Things

Netflix’s biggest hit of the year has already had a game created in its honor and inspired some others. However, being that Stranger Things takes place in a world before Super Nintendo, who knows how it will take to get to the fancy technology? Just imagine seeing a 16-bit Demogorgon.

7. Finding Dory

Join Dory and her many friends including Nemo, Marlin, Hank, Destiny, and more in the latest adventure from Disney and Pixar. In this game, you’ll make your way through various levels as Dory tries to find her familly and help her friends.

8.Deadpool

First things first: This game is for mature audiences only. Suit up as the Merc with a Mouth as you beat up bad guys using swords and some painful insults that will leave a tear in their eye. Don’t expect any X-Men to show up and help you (the studio can’t afford that).

Embed This Image On Your Site:

9.Suicide Squad

The worst heroes ever are brought together and sent into the city on a mission to...rescue somebody? Or maybe defeat a villain? We're not fully sure what they're actually doing in this game, but the characters sure are cool!

10. The Jungle Book

Can you survive in the jungle with just the bare necessities? If you stay out of the way of Shere Khan, you'll have a great time in this fun game. 2016's The Jungle Book also has some of the most breath-taking graphics you'll ever see from a Super Nintendo game.

Embed This Image On Your Site:

11. Zootopia

Zootopia is in danger! As Officer Judy Hopps, you’ll have to use all your resources to solve the latest crimes being committed in the city. Hopefully, you don't get stuck dealing with all the sloths at the DMV.

12. Better Call Saul

Jimmy McGill is just a small time lawyer trying to make ends meet. Do you think you have what it takes to climb the ladder to become a big time criminal attorney while walking the tight line between bending the rules and breaking the law?

Embed This Image On Your Site:

13. Alice Through the Looking Glass

Crawl down the rabbit hole in the follow up to 2010's Alice in Wonderland. Again, Alice will be joined by favorite characters like the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts, and the Cheshire Cat. Really though, this one isn't as good as the first and probably shouldn't have been made.

14. Daredevil

You better believe the Punisher will show up for Daredevil 2, the game inspired by the second season of Netflix’s popular series from Marvel. Following the takedown of Wilson Fisk, Matt Murdock has to battle the trained assassins of The Hand.

15. The Hateful Eight

Tensions are high as two bounty hunters, a fugitive, the sherriff, and four others are trapped together in a stagecoach lodge during a terrible blizzard. Will you choose the right character and make it out alive?

16. Orange is the New Black

The Orange Is the New Black game is unlike any other in the SNES library. Not only do you get to choose which character you want to play as, but each character has their own story to follow, complete with flashbacks! It’s like having 20 games in one!

13 Scary Clowns in Movies and Television

Why are clowns so terrifying? Is it the blood-red lips? Or the perpetually-smiling mouths? Maybe they terrified us as children, like Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny. For someone with a fear of clowns, often called “coulrophobia”, even the most joyful clowns are downright sinister. And even when they’re actually harmless, clowns can appear unsettling or weird. As far as we’re concerned, all clowns are scary clowns! With this in mind, we looked at the 13 of the most iconic scary clowns in movies and television, along with a number of honorable mentions.

Trick or treating! Jack-o-lantern carving! Chocolate! Is it any surprise that Halloween is most kids’ favorite day of the year? We’ve got costumes for every kid. Got a kid who just won’t stop singing “Let It Go"? We've got an Elsa costume for that. (Anna, too.) How about a tween who loves the Avengers? Thor has arrived from Isengard. Maybe you're a new parent with an infant who you want to dress up for adorable Halloween photos? Babies can be some of the most fun people to dress up, so think carefully about the perfect baby costume. Whether or not you have one little baby or a whole tribe of kids to dress up, the fact remains that these costume selections will become immortal in family photo album history. The right choice is more important than ever! If you need a little extra help coming up with costume idea suggestions, this blog post should do the trick. Here are some of our favorites for 2016.

Superhero Costumes For Kids

The only thing cooler than dressing up as superheroes is dressing your kids up as superheroes. These kids’ costumes will attract the attention of just about everybody, all while being trendy and relevant. The hot costume this year is sure to be Harley Quinn, a character in the new Suicide Squad movie. Thor was the one missing Avenger from this year’s Captain America: Civil War, so do his character justice by bringing him back to the streets this Halloween. Ghostbusters was another big film this year, but for babies, our favorite costume is Baby Jack from The Incredibles. Just watch out for fires!

Movie Animal Costumes For Kids

Zootopia Nick Wilde Boys Costume - Shop     Girls Bear Costume - Shop

Kids love animal costumes, and it’s not hard to see why. Zootopia, The Secret Life of Pets, and even all the way back to The Jungle Book - costumes based on animals have long been favorites. If you just can't do another year of Frozen, we have lots of other Disney princesses in stock for every age - from baby costumes up to tweens. Star Wars outfits have been popular since oh, about 1977. Yet this Halloween, you have a big reason to dress your kids up in the costumes. First, it’s the first Star Wars film to feature a female protagonist, Rey. Her costume looks especially iconic. Or you could go old school and get the look of Star Wars original feminist icon, the former Princess Leia (now General Leia Organa). For your son, our X-Wing costume looks quite similar to Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron uniform. If you have a toddler, the Yoda costume plays to the size of your little one, creating the perfect ensemble green-head to green-toe.

DIY Prince Halloween Costume for Kids

Purple Rain Album Cover[Source]

While we weren’t able to secure a child-sized motorcycle for our little kid to use to drive through the mean streets of Minneapolis, we WERE able to help him look the part the best way we know how: creating a do-it-yourself, one-of-a-kind Halloween costume by pulling together bits and pieces from other costumes. Purple strobe lights, a fog machine, and an electric guitar helped our little guy have the right attitude once his ensemble was complete.

The first thing that came to mind when planning this DIY Halloween costume of Prince was… Willy Wonka. We mean, who ELSE wears a long purple coat on the regular? The candy man! We pulled that and then had to figure out all the details. Ruffles? Pirates, duh. Prince taught us that fashion knows no gender boundaries, so we swiped the wrist and neck ruffles from this women’s swashbuckler costume. This wig is for adults, but with some adjusting, combing, and hairspray, it looked just fine on our tiny rock star. And if he doesn’t want to wear the eyeliner and curly wig all night? That’s okay. Parties aren’t meant to last.

Purple Rain Halloween Costume"Are we gonna let the elevator bring us down? Oh, no, let's go!"

Kids Prince Halloween CostumeBonus points if your kid is 7 years old!

The last little touches were to do some quick makeup. We used eyeliner and mascara to add a basic, dramatic smoky eye, and then sponged on a little bit of black cream makeup to recreate the scruff that Prince rocked.

For the grown-ups out there, we do have an adult version of the Purple Rain look, exclusive to HalloweenCostumes.com. This costume comes with the high-collared, studded purple over coat, the ruffed shirt front, and black pants. With this look, you’ll look right at home at First Avenue.

Prince Star at First Ave[Source]

We hope this DIY costume guide helped you create your own Prince costume. One thing that a costume CAN’T provide is the rock star swagger and confidence that Prince so supremely displayed wherever he went – supplying that little smirk is up to your little kid. If you or anyone you know decides to pay homage to Prince this Halloween, please share with us in the comments or on our Facebook or Instagram! See the rest of our kid costumes here.

Killer Careers: Actors Who Got Their Start in Horror Films [Infographic]

 Killer Careers Header

Psst. Come closer. We want to fill you in on a little dirty secret of ours: we are completely obsessed with horror movies. Slasher flicks, zombie films, science fiction thrillers, and supernatural major motion pictures; we bloody love 'em all! Bring on all the gore, mangled monsters, blood-curdling shrieks, and the perpetual paranormal hauntings because we can handle it. Sure, we watch most horror movies through spliced fingers while shielding our eyes, but we wouldn't have it any other way. Seriously. There's something about being immobilized with fear that makes us feel so...alive.

So, being the self-confessed creepy movie connoisseurs that we are, we couldn't help but notice one particular startling trend: whoa, there are so many baby-faced Hollywood A-listers popping up in our favorite old-school scary movies. Before these big league stars made the big bucks, they could be seen dodging flesh-eating furballs and running from chainsaw-wielding psychopaths. Watching these cinema hall of famers being hacked to bits by some classic fictional killers makes us giddy with delight, so we've decided to expose all of the skeletons hiding in their horror movie closets. Our infographic is one force to be reckoned with that these stars won't be able to run away from!

Let us know which one of these actors or actresses made you gasp in utter shock. Better yet, do you know any more stars who got their big break after acting in a horror flick? Running Costumes for Your Next Race

$

You did it! You finally signed up for a 5K, and you’re feeling awesome. Well, truthfully, you have a lot of nervous energy building up about it … but still, you’re mostly just stoked! A good pair of sneakers is integral, of course, but you’ve undoubtedly checked out pictures from previous races– people go all out for these events! (They aren’t classified as “fun runs” for nothing.) However, how do you know what to wear for each race? If you’re new to the running scene (or just need a refresher course), here’s our official guide to dressing up for your next 5K race.

COLOR RUN Costumes

White Morphsuit - Shop    Rainbow Pony Wig - Shop   White Tutu - Shop

Rainbow Dash - Shop     Cold Rainbow Lip Applique - Shop   Purple Crayola Eyelashes - Shop

What is it?Nicknamed “The Happiest 5K on the Planet,” The Color Run is all about healthiness and community. At each kilometer checkpoint, you will be doused from head to toe in different colors.

What should you wear? You definitely want to wear all white to this race (just be sure to leave valuable clothing at home – the color will not come out in the wash), but it’s also the perfect opportunity to infuse your favorite colorinto the look with accessories. The terrain is not extreme and there are lots of photo ops along the way – especially if you partake in one of their night races. Therefore, leis, boas, and sunglasses seldom get in the way. Rain or shine, it’s hard to have a bad day at this race, so don’t be afraid to let your outfit reflect your personality.

WARRIOR DASH Costumes

Spartan Warrior Costume - Shop   Roman Helmet - Shop   Spartan Warrior Cape - Shop

What is it?The Warrior Dash encourages you to “leave your normal weekend in the mud.” Racers will conquer 12 obstacles and venture through lots of mud-caked terrain, all in an effort to become a member of “Warrior Nation” (the organization also donates money to St. Jude Children’s Hospital).

What should you wear?Anything you wear here will get ruined … including your shoes (the event even has a sneaker recycling station at the finish line). You can try to get the mud out of your clothing, but even the strongest detergents have a tough time. Still, this threat has not deterred Spartans, gladiators, and pretty much any other character with a loincloth or kilt – their getups reign supreme on these grounds. Not sure if you want to get that intimate with the mud? Try rocking a helmet or cape. Our only pro-tip is to keep it simple because you’ve got Goliath to contend with.

TURKEY TROT Costumes

Turkey Costume - Shop     Raw Turkey Hat - Shop

Pilgrim Man - Shop   American Indian Headdress - Shop

What is it?After a big turkey dinner, do you feel like you’ve got too much wobble in your gobble? Turkey Trots offer the opportunity to get up off the couch, burn those extra holiday calories, and get active with your whole family (even Fido is invited).

What should you wear?Who’s ready to shake a tail feather? As you might expect, Thanksgiving costumes are the most popular guises in this race. Turkey t-shirts are often paired with silly hats to offer the most freedom of movement in your stride, but you haven’t lived until you’ve seen a woman in a pilgrim dress kick in the nitrous toward the finish line. Bonus points are always awarded to those who go full turkey, and we think you’re just the runner for the job. This complete fleece number is a perennial favorite.

JINGLE BELL RUN Costumes

Elf Hat - Shop      Elf Hoodie - Shop    Rudolph Light Up Hat - Shop

Santa Claus T-Shirt - Shop     Plush Santa Hat - Shop    Christmas Sweater - Shop

What is it?Support the Arthritis Foundation’s research and get into the holiday spirit with runners from all across the United States.

What should you wear?Run, run, Rudolph! But first things first: You will need to tie jingle bells to your shoes. It’s tradition, and it sounds super festive as everyone runs by (though, to be honest, you WILL hear bells for a few days afterwards). Ugly Christmas sweaters, striped socks, Santa hats, glitter antlers – anything goes! Just leave your elf shoes at home. Athletic shoes are the footwear of choice for any runner that doesn’t reside at the North Pole.

DIRTY GIRL Costumes

Pink Bandana - Shop   Neon Pink 80s Shutter Shades - Shop   Pink Adult Wig - Shop

Neon Pink Footless Tights - Shop    Hot Pink Leg Warmers - Shop    Pink Tutu - Shop

What is it?The “World’s Largest Women Only Mud Run” has taken the world by storm! 3.1 miles is filled to the brim with 14 course obstacles that empower women to fight their way to the finish line. Breast and ovarian cancer fundraising is an optional opportunity.

What should you wear? The key here is to “think pink!” Yes, you will be making your way through the mud and muck, but Dirty Girls finish with flair. Tutus, tiaras, boas, glitter lashes, sweat bands, bandanas, wigs, wings, and pretty much anything else that screams “femininity” will be worn by participants. Find a few items that you can add to your post-race ensemble (pops of pink look great next to dirt IRL and in photos).

5K GROUP COSTUME IDEAS

Ninja Turtle T-Shirt - Shop     Green Tutu - Shop     Hawaiian Accessory Kit - Shop

Iron Man T-Shirt - Shop     Gorilla Costume - Shop

For most fun run participants, the goal is not to “WIN!” the race, but rather have a good time with a bunch of their pals (and maybe raise some money for a good cause). Sure, you’ll still see uber-competitors in the lineup, but it’s perfectly acceptable (and encouraged!) to just enjoy the company of your nearest and dearest – regardless of their skill level. A popular (and really, our favorite) way to show team solidarity is by wearing matching disguises. For example, we love tutu’d Ninja Turtles for a fearless foursome or the Avengers for even larger teams. Three blind mice (see how they run!), bumblebees, hula girls, Waldo and Wenda, Minions, Thing 1 & Thing 2 (and 3, 4, 5, etc.), and the 3 Little Pigs (as well as one big, bad wolf, if you wish) – there are so many theme possibilities that the real issue may be having to choose just one.

Costume T-Shirts - Shop     Tutus - Shop     Gorilla Costumes - Shop

Hawaiian Costumes - Shop     Ninja Turtles Costumes - Shop

5K DOS AND DON’TS

  • DO try on your outfit before race day. This will allow you to give it a whirl around the block and see what works and what doesn’t. If something bunches or rides up, now is the time to switch it out. You don’t want to be uncomfortable during the event.
  • DON’Tforget that functionality is fun (and important)! We love boas too, but if you’re doing multiple challenges or obstacles, they may become a hindrance.
  • DOarrive early to the race. Give yourself plenty of time to suit up, warm up, and drink up (the first rule of running is to stay hydrated)! You’ll also feel less pressure to cram everything in – pictures, mingling with fellow competitors, etc. Keep stress low on this milestone day.
  • DON’T bring multiple props or cumbersome items that someone will have to hold all day. Towels, water bottles, and snacks your cheering section will have plenty of other items in tow.
  • DO fully immerse yourself in the experience. Fun Runs go all out to maintain the integrity of their themes.
  • DON’T be afraid to get a little silly! This is a giant achievement that you will remember forever – why not make it extraordinary?

Is this your first 5K? What motivated you to sign up? Are you participating with a group of pals or are you running solo? What are you going to wear on race day? Let us know in the comments, and show off your event style by uploading the best picture from the day!

Halloween Costumes for Blondes

Who’s tired of hearing things like, “Are you having a blonde moment?” Dude, we just misplaced our keys! Has a brunette never misplaced her keys? Haters are going to hate, sure, but why all the ditzy stereotypes? Madam Curie was a blonde, and she was a two-time Nobel Prize winner (to be fair, she likely never misplaced the laboratory keys)! With strands that shine like the sun, it’s hard not to feel instantly effervescent in a cool champagne hue. And from surfer girls to femme fatales, golden manes are synonymous with being sexy! Therefore, when it comes to dressing up for a costume event, hair is very often an integral part of the character. Serena van der Woodsen, Princess Diana, Carrie Bradshaw, Gwen Stefani – they are all virtually unrecognizable without bright, blonde locks. At HalloweenCostumes.com, we think of blondes as bold, carefree, wild-spirited, happy, and UNSTOPPABLE! So if you’ve got it, why not flaunt it … your blonde hair, that is!

If being bad is wrong, we don’t want to be right! Some of the greatest villains of all time are blondes. Proof: Harry Potter had Draco Malfoy, who was often more vile than Voldemort, Regina George made “personal victimization” an art form, and Cersei Lannister … Remember, Remember, the Great Sept of Baelor. One of our favorite villains has to be Elle Driver from Kill Bill. Not only is she an amazing fighter and swordsman, but, boy, does she know how to whistle! Good news, we have recreated her nurse uniform, complete with eye patch. All you have to add are your long and loose blonde waves, as well as a ruby red lip.

What’s the secret to a happily ever after? According to nearly every fairytale ever, blonde hair doesn’t hurt. The style here is going to be a cross between beauty pageant and “big Texas.” Curls, curls, curls = essential. We like a braided crown or a tiara to really add the “princess” distinction. Speaking of princesses, Buttercup’s our fave. She may not be in Disney’s lineup, but it would be positively inconceivable not to add her to ours! Sure, she had to deal with Rodents of Unusual Size, but she got a lifetime with the Dread Pirate Roberts in the end. This brings us to the conclusion that there’s a lot of power in princess hair.

Blonde SIRENS

There are few ladies who knew how to rock some blonde barrel curls better than Hollywood’s Golden Age elite. Grace Kelly, Veronica Lake, Mae West, Carole Lombard, Jean Harlow, Jayne Mansfield, and Marilyn Monroe – just to name a few. On screen, they were the very embodiment of glamour. Off screen, they ignited photo lenses with their pinup flair. You may not have a lot of retro fashion already in your closet, so a vintage store is a great place to start looking for authentic pieces, like full, flare skirts, twinsets, and belts. But to achieve a more classic “pin-up” look, there are a lot of military-inspired costume options readily available. Simply find an ensemble to accentuate your hourglass figure and bring out the silk pillowcase – you wouldn’t want to wreck those ringlets over a silly little thing like sleep, would you?

Blonde DIVAS

From punk to pop to country, there isn’t a music genre that is lacking blonde ambition … why do you think records go platinum? Dolly Parton, with her southern-isms and infectious giggle, is always a hit at Halloween parties. All you need to do is get a little western garb, maybe a guitar, and the biggest hairdo that can of Aquanet deems possible. Nope. Keep teasing it. When you think it’s too big, it’s just right. Maybe you won’t be heading to the Grammy’s in your lifetime, but that doesn’t mean you can’t channel Taylor Swift for one night. TSwift has lots of looks, but short shorts are a must – a good breakup song doesn’t hurt either. When taking center stage is your goal, the entire point is to have fun … and who knows how to have more fun than blondes?

Do you even lift, bro? We’re talking highlights, obviously. Blonde guys have some of the most fun characters to portray because, honestly, they are almost always scoundrels (in the movies – real life blonde guys are AWESOME!). For example, Ivan Drago, of Rocky fame, is, perhaps, one of the most memorable bad guys of all time! “If he dies, he dies.” Classic! Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans know and love Spike for his dry wit and dastardly deeds, and, if you’re able to pull of an ascot/polo combo, you could give Fred (from Scooby Doo) a whirl … he’s not technically a bad guy, but he does have bad fashion sense. Looking to go a little darker? Jax from Sons of Anarchy is a lady-killer AND you get to make a grand entrance with the roar of a Harley (or a well-detailed minivan, whichever you have in the garage).

THE WANNABE BLONDES

You weren’t #blessed with flaxen fringe? No worries! There’s no shame in relying upon “blonde in a box.” (If it’s good enough for Beyonce, it’s good enough for us!) But maybe you’re looking for a little less permanent commitment – that’s where wigs are a good choice. Not only do they give you the opportunity to ease into the thought of changing your hair color (and you will once you find out how great you look!), but they also add authenticity to your character. Gatsby’s Daisy Buchanan? Blonde. Barney Rubble? Blonde. Elsa? Blonde. Pretty Little Liars alum, Hanna Marin? Blonde. Brunettes and redheads are plenty lovely, but there are just some things that only fair-hairs can pull off.

Do you have your heart set on dressing up as a blondie this year? Who is your favorite sandy-topped character? Is it true that blondes have more fun? Tell us what you think in the comments below. Don’t forget to upload pictures – we love seeing your blonde-sformations!

treehouse of horror header

The Simpsons has been around a long, long time (before some of its viewers were even born!) and yet, thanks to the genius writers, animators, and voice actors, it remains one of the funniest things we've ever seen, or will likely ever see. You could chock it up to luck, timing, whatever sort of grace the TV gods have to bestow once a generation, but the truth is that the Simpsons just hit everything right. What happens when you lock a bunch of Harvard comedy writers in a room together? The result is The Simpsons. With guys like Conan O'Brien and John Schwartzwelder writing gags all day, it's no wonder that 90% of our daily references come from the show. And if you're a fan, now that it's Halloween season, you know that means 90% of your Halloween references come from the classic annual Treehouse of Horror episodes.

There are so many to choose from; we had verbal battles over this, but for the most part we had a lot of fun remembering (and quoting) our favorite moments from the show to come up with this list. Nobody was turned into a sloppy joe, but there were casualties. There could only be ten, so one of your favorites might not be on here, but we bet at least one of them is... sorry, it's like choosing children! You get it though. You're a fan, too. Now, picture if you will, these macabre (and hilarious) Treehouse of Horror minimalist posters...

Best Adult Halloween Costumes 2016

The countdown has begun! Halloween is upon us and it’s time to start searching for that perfect costume. Since last Halloween, we’ve seen some big movies in the theaters - from Star Wars: The Force Awakens to Captain America: Civil War to Suicide Squad. We’ve got costumes for your favourite characters from those films. (Yes, including Harley Quinn.) Throwbacks? As if! We have new nostalgic costumes from Clueless, The Goonies, and Mean Girls. With Halloween so close to Election Day this year, we of course have Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton costumes, as well. Inflatables are huge this year, too. These blow-up costumes are larger than life and great for grabbing the attention of your friends. If you want to go back to basics, we’ve got great old-school costumes of animals, clowns, pirates, and mummies. The HalloweenCostumes.com HQ has been working hard this year to give you the best costumes, and we hope you’ll enjoy our 2016 costume ideas list.

Nostalgic Costumes

Nostalgic Halloween Costumes

Chunk from The Goonies Costume - Shop     Ace Ventura Tutu Costume - Shop

Nostalgia is always a good way to go, and with our officially licensed costumes from classic movies from the 80s through the 00s, you’ll have plenty to chose from. Bust out the plaids and cans of Diet Coke and dress up as your favourite character from Clueless. If you want something a bit more recent, you can put together a group costume and wear the Santa costume The Plastics made famous in Mean Girls. Our Goonies costumes are going to have you shouting “Hey you guuuys!” all night long. Somebody stop me! We also have great Ace Ventura costumes for your selection.

Ace Ventura

Suicide Squad Costumes

Suicide Squad Joker - Shop     Suicide Squad Harley Quinn Costume - Shop

Suicide Squad Deadshot Costume - Shop     Suicide Squad Katana Costume - Shop

One of the biggest movies of 2016 also featured a complete re-imagining of a comic book character that is sure to be a huge costume. We’re talking about Harley Quinn, of course. She initially debuted in the 90s kids TV cartoon Batman: The Animated Series, but has since seen a resurgence thanks to Margot Robbie’s performance in Suicide Squad. The Harley Quinn and Joker costume would make a great couples’ pairing, or you can get a group of friends together and all wear costumes from Task Force X.

Batman v Superman Costumes

Superman - Shop     Batman - Shop     Wonder Woman -  Shop     Aquaman - Shop

Suicide Squad wasn’t the only big DC Comics movie to debut this year. Batman v. Superman launched what will become a major franchise of films which will culminate in the Justice League movie coming in 2017. Batman v Superman gave us our first look at some of the characters in this film like Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and the newly redesigned Batman costume. This armored outfit is inspired by the famous Frank Miller graphic novels and will put you squarely in the Ben Affleck Batman costume camp, (as opposed to the Christian Bale, Michael Keaton, Adam West, or *shudder* George Clooney Batmans). Don’t forget Superman's costume, which is inspired by the Henry Cavill iteration of the character.

Ghostbuster Costumes

Ghostbusters 2016 Womens Costume - Shop     Sexy Ghostbuster Costume - Shop

Ghostbusters 1984 Costume - Shop     Stay Puft Marshmallow Man Costume - Shop

Ghostbusters was the most talked-about remake of the year. This all-female reboot of the original 80s movie featured memorable performances from Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon. For fans of the new movie, we have costume jumpsuits of the reimagined suits. For fans of the classics, we have the original costumes, as well. But, what if busting DOESN'T make you feel good?! (That's so weird.) You can be the ultimate spectral vision as this inflatable Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Yikes!

Star Wars Costumes

Rey Costume - Shop     Kylo Ren Costume - Shop

Sexy Princess Leia Slave Costume - Shop    Anakin Skywalker - Shop

In 2016 we’re faced with a very first world problem - just which Star Wars era costume to wear? Of course the en vogue thing to do is wear the costumes from The Force Awakens. After all, the film only came out in December, so this is your first chance to don Rey or Kylo Ren costumes for Halloween. On the other hand, can you really compete with the original trilogy? Our Princess Leia Slave costume looks so authentic you’ll want to carry a chain with which to choke Jabba the Hutt when Luke Skywalker makes his entrance. Or you could go against the grain and dress up as the critically unpopular Anakin Skywalker from the prequel trilogy. He does have the most hammy lines, so you can go toe-to-toe with Hayden Christensen's line readings. Just try competing with this:

Whatever Star Wars costume you decide, may the force be with you.

Marvel Costumes

Black Widow Costume - Shop     Captain America Costume - Shop     Iron Man Costume - Shop

Ant Man Costume - Shop     Spider-Girl - Shop

It’s going to be another big year for Marvel movie costumes. Captain America: Civil War played out more like an Avengers movie, with many of our favorite characters returning to the big screen, including a scene-stealing battle sequence with Marvel Cinematic Universe’s newest character, Ant Man, who was fighting alongside and with Captain America, Black Widow, Iron Man, and the other big surprise of the film (spoiler!), Spider-Man.

Animal Costumes

Deer Costume - Shop     Sloth Costume - Shop     Zebra Costume - Shop     Camel Costume - Shop

Animal costumes will never go out of style, and these retro costumes will have you wearing something that is both funny and unique. Dress like a deer, a sloth, a zebra, or find a good friend to be a camel with you - just leave us out of the argument over who goes in the costume’s backside!

Inflatable Costumes

Evil Clown - Shop     Spongebob Squarepants Patrick Costume - Shop

Man in a Tub Costume - Shop     Tauntaun Costume - Shop

Inflatable costumes have taken over! These costumes are lightweight, yet they take up more room than a normal costume and give you lots of opportunities to steal the spotlight. We’ll leave it up to you which is scarier - the horrifyingly creepy Evil Clown costume or the Man in the Tub. Just make sure not to cut the Tauntaun open for warmth - it won't be quite like the movie!

Current Events/Topical Costumes

With only 9 days between Halloween and the election, there is lots of interest in our topical costumes. For the traditionalist, we have the Hillary mask and Trump “Make America Great Again” hat, which will let you emulate the two major party nominees in a more authentic light. For a comical take on the nominees, check out our caricature masks, which make the two candidates a bit larger than life. Don’t forget that there’s only a few months left of President Obama’s tenure, so it could be high time to bust out your best suit to combine with our Obama mask.

Political Costumes

Uncle Sam Costume - Shop      Jackie O Costume - Shop

Abe Lincoln - Shop    Betsy Ross - Shop

Of course, our political costumes aren’t limited just to Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. The USA has a 240-year history, and there’s lots of inspiration that can be drawn from America’s past. Uncle Sam is the physical embodiment of America, so our Uncle Sam costume may be a good place to start. Abraham Lincoln is commonly regarded as one of our best presidents. Jackie Kennedy is one of our most famous first ladies, and Betsy Ross is the creator of the American flag. With any of these political costumes you’re sure to feel the USA! USA! USA! coursing through your veins.

These costume suggestions just scratch the surface of choices for the year. All of our adult costumes are great choices! Looking for costumes for your little ones? Don’t forget to check out our Kids Costume Guide 2016.

Trump and Hillary DIY Costume

The election season is upon us and America is full of conflicted voters who have yet to decide if Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump should be our next President of the United States. Clinton, if elected, would become the first female president in history, and Trump would become the first president to come straight from a corner office. In a race this close, the position is anyone’s for the taking right up to Election Day. There are still a few presidential debates between now and then, including another one this Sunday the 9th, that can hopefully make the decision easier on voters come November 8th. In the meantime, we can be entertained by the creative folk that have made the internet such a wonderful place.

Although we are living in pre-election turmoil, one thing that isn’t up for debate these days is the most popular Halloween costumes for 2016. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton costumes are already among the top conteders and various news articles have reported on the spike in popularity.

At the Democratic National Convention, we learned how much Bill Clinton likes balloons. He looked like a little kid in a candy store, or our staff during Halloween! When Bill was president, Hillary was his First Lady, but now that Hillary is running for the Oval Office, what does that make Bill? While he probably won't be hosting any tea parties for spouses of dignitaries or picking out the new fine china any time soon, we think he should be welcomed back to his old stomping grounds with balloons should Hillary win the election. DIY Hamilton Costume Ideas That Will Leave You Satisfied

2016 has become the year of Hamilton. After debuting in early 2015 off-Broadway and transferring to Broadway in August 2015, this year the hit musical won 11 Tony Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, a Grammy Award, and received an invitation to the White House to perform for President Obama. While it continues to dazzle audiences on Broadway, shows are being mounted in Chicago, London, and a US National Touring Production, which opens in San Francisco. We hope these extra productions will bring the ticket price down from the over $1,000 it has been fetching. In the meantime, though, here are some costume guides to help you bring the musical to your hometown for Halloween. Creating the costumes will require a bit of ingenuity. Our guide draws from a number of other seemingly unrelated offerrings, combining Halloween costumes you’ll never think could go together. The end result will be something truly unique. Now do Lin-Manuel Miranda proud and start crafting. There are a million costumes we haven't made, but just you wait...

These costumes will also be perfect for a SNL screening when Lin-Manuel Miranda hosts on Saturday the 8th and for when PBS airs it's documentary on the musical on the 21st of October.

Aaron Burr Halloween Costume

The narrator and antagonist of our story, Aaron Burr, is the one who shot and killed our title character Alexander Hamilton (spoiler alert for those of you who slept through US History in school). The play takes place over three decades and Aaron Burr is in most scenes, changing costumes throughout. His most memorable scene and the basis for this costume guide comes mid-way through Act II in the show-stopping “Room Where it Happens.” For a truly authentic costume, you'll need to get a bald cap to mirror Leslie Odom Jr's glorious bald head.

King George III Halloween Costume

King George III of England is a peculiar character. He has fewer scenes than anyone in the musical, his character has no dialogue with any of the main characters, and yet he is amongst the most memorable of any of the characters in the musical. His songs are all soliloquies to the audience regarding his feelings about the American Revolution from England. They’re sung in the style of Brit-pop and are hilariously delivered with a huge crown upon his head. Jonathan Groff's interpretation of this character involved him gracefully walking on stage without moving much of his upper body at all. He revealed in interviews this was in order to keep the massive crown on his head. So make sure to wear the crown with pride, and if anyone laughs, send a fully armed battalion to remind them of your love.

Thomas Jefferson Halloween Costume

While Aaron Burr plays the tragic villian role in Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson is the straight-up villain. Returning from France at the start of Act II, Thomas Jefferson is portrayed as an arrogant elitist hypocrite who battles our hero, Alexander Hamilton, and is one of the catalysts for Hamilton's political downfall. A bit different than you might remember from history class, eh? His garish costumes are some of the best in the musical, taking one part colonial wear and matching it with a dash of Prince. Daveed Diggs' hair is a costume piece unto itself, and a wig is an essential part of any Jefferson costume. Make sure to style it just right - it's what Thomas Jefferson would have wanted.

George Washington Halloween Costume

George Washington is one of the most venerated characters in American history, so it’s no surprise that we already stock a George Washington costume. This will serve as the base-plate for most of our remaining Act I character costumes. Act I characters are all soldiers in the Continental Army, so their uniforms are similar to General Washington’s. Lose the hat and wig though - Hamilton mixes our traditional perception of these characters with some modern touches. In this case, it's a bit more rustic version than the standard Washington tricorn hat. Don't forget the proudly bald head of Christopher Jackson. Finally, add a sash (which befits an officer of Washington's stature).

Marquis de Lafayette Halloween Costume

Marquis de Lafayette was the secret weapon of the American Revolution, providing guns and ships to the Continental Army. Everyone give it up for America’s favorite fighting Frenchman! Take a dash of the Napoleon costume to match with this Frenchman’s uniform, then add the sword and sheath. Attached it to the belt, these tools tell us how powerful Lafayette was. Lafayette was was also portrayed by Daveed Diggs, who gave us two of Hamilton's most memorable characters. (In Act II, Diggs lets down his hair and transforms into the aforementioned Thomas Jefferson)

Alexander Hamilton Halloween Costume

Finally, we reach our title character. The Alexander Hamilton costume is fairly easy, just take the Washington costume, ditch the hat and wig, and work on perfecting the folicile stylings of Lin-Manuel Miranda. To play this role, Miranda grew out his long, dark hair, but we'll make it easier on you and suggest a wig. All you need to do is pull it back into a ponytail and trim it up a bit. Don't forget the goatee!

George Washington Costume - Shop     Goatee - Shop     Black wig - Shop

Hercules Mulligan Halloween Costume

The tailor spying on the British government gets a little flair with a George Washington coat paired with a black beanie. This rough-and-tumble friend of Alexander Hamilton is portrayed by Okieriete Onaodowan as a Busta Rhymes-esque rapper, so your costume will need to do as he did and ditch the old hat and wig for a black stocking cap.

George Washington Costume - Shop     Black Skullcap - Shop

John Laurens Halloween Costume

A y-yo y-yo yo what time is it? Time to break out the John Laurens costume. Take the George Washington costume, lose the hat and wig, then buy a new wig to match Anthony Ramos' flowing hair. Tie it back and boom - you'll be ready for two pints of Sam Adams (now get to work on three).

For a little extra flair, why not grab 11 of these to carry around for the night? Your arms might get a little tired for carrying around one Tony Award for each win Hamilton scored last ceremony, but just ask Lin-Manuel if that's a problem for him.

DIY Negan Costume: A Walking Dead Halloween Tutorial

Negan is a brutal but charismatic antagonist in both the comic book and television series versions of The Walking Dead. The character was first introduced in July 2012 in the comic books–issue #100–as leader of the Washington, D.C. bandit group The Saviors. He has been a popular recurring character ever since. In April 2015, Negan appeared in the final episode of season six of the television series. This was hyped since the mid-season break, along with the fact that he would kill one of the protagonists. Our DIY costume and makeup guide is based on Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s performance in the television series, as he threatens the protagonists with Lucille, his bat wrapped with barbed wire.

Here’s Negan from “Last Day on Earth”, the 16th episode of season 6. He’s towering over Rick, the show’s primary protagonist. Note his leather jacket, maroon/red scarf, and bat. We’ll be building our DIY around these elements.

Putting this costume together is a cinch. We’ll start with the leather jacket. We chose our Grease Authentic T-Birds jacket, but that’s because we knew we’d be taking photos from the front. Unless you’re an expert at removing embroidered patches, we’d suggest checking your local thrift stores for the real deal. We added some maroon Elvis scarves, just wrapped around the neck and tucked into the jacket. Our western bandolier bullet belt is sized to hang from one shoulder to the opposite hip, so we shortened it to hang around the waist. Duct tape works fine for this, as long as you can hide it under the jacket. Add some dark pants and belt and you’re set. Depending on your natural beardiness, you may need a fake mustache. We'll get into coloring your real or fake beard later on. But now onto the bat!

DIY Barbed Wire Bat

DIY Barbed Wire Bat

This one’s easy, because you have options. You could get a replica of Negan’s bat, Lucille. But you can also wrap some barbed wire garland around a toy baseball, which is super simple. (Please don't use real barbed wire and a real bat. Safety first!) Here are the step-by-step instructions. Start with your bat, garland, and tape (1, as shown in the image above). Tape down one end of the garland onto the bat (2). You can also start by tying the garland around the bat, but we found that the tape keeps the garland from sliding all over. Next, wrap the garland over the tape and around the bat (3). If necessary, add another piece of tape to further secure the garland (4). Space out the garland so that the end reaches the tip of the bat, then tie it in a knot (5). Now let’s look at the makeup!

Negan Makeup

Negan DIY Makeup

Negan’s been roughing it for a while, so he’s a bit scruffy. Get some dirt effects with makeup, but don’t overdo it. (He's not Pig-Pen. Also, that will be the only Peanuts reference in this Walking Dead DIY.) As mentioned above, add a fake mustache if you need it. Some silver and black hairspray will help you get that salt-and-pepper beard effect. Also remember to slick back that hair, and you're done.

The Final Look

Negan DIY Regret

"You are so gonna regret crossing me in a few minutes…. Yes you are."

Negan DIY Lucille

"This. This is Lucille, and she is awesome."

Negan DIY Career Day

"Today was career day. We invested in a lot, so you would know who I am and what I can do."

What did you think? Are you planning on dressing as Negan for Halloween? Or maybe for a Walking Dead premiere party? Tell us all about it in the comments below. Be sure to link some photos, too! And remember that if you plan to recreate scenes from the television series or comic book, your friends will need some Walking Dead costumes of their own.

Halloween Costumes for Twins

If you and your sibling were once womb-mates, it’s highly likely that your mom dressed you to match once and awhile (read: EVERY. SINGLE. SATURDAY. For the weekly trip to Grandma’s house) … even if you aren’t identical … or the same gender. You can’t really blame her; there are few things cuter than matching babies. By now, however, we’re going to guess that you’ve developed your own sense of style (entirely separate from your brother or sister). But when it comes to pulling off an impressive Halloween costume idea, twins have a built-in buddy -- so why not grasp on to your lifelong wingman for the assist? What is bacon without the eggs? Peanut butter without jelly? Maverick without Goose? Face it: You’re better together, and so are all of these twin costume ideas.

Let’s start off real easy: Siblings. Who knows the motivation of these characters better than you and yours? He-Man and She-Ra were "Masters of the Universe" with the common bonds of fighting against Skeletor and defending the honor of Castle Grayskull – proving that teamwork makes the dream work. Our favorite pick in this category, though, has to be the Grady Twins from The Shining. Not only are they super creepy, but they also take you back to your matchy-matchy roots. This look goes to the next level by holding hands whenever you enter a room. Bonus points for a well timed “come play with us.” Other sibling contenders are Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia, and Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.

Costumes for PERFECT PAIRS

Some siblings are polar opposites of one another, but not you guys. You complement each other in every way. Maybe you finish each other’s sentences, maybe you don’t. The fact of the matter is there’s no need for twinsie parlor tricks to know you mesh. Perfect pairs are just that – perfect. Salt and pepper, pizza and beer, yin and yang; some things are just innate. Like Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm! They were the best playmates, and who doesn’t like an excuse to carry a club? For those that are a little wilder, Thing 1 and Thing 2 instantly become the life of the party. Laurel and Hardy, Zuko and Kenickie, Cher and Dionne, Wayne and Garth, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey – Alone they’re good, but, like you two (and the Wonder Twins!), when their forces combine, they’re great.

Costumes for ALTER EGOS

Halloween Costumes for Opposite Twins

Sometimes twins refer to one as “the better half.” This notion is personified easily with classic devil and angel disguises. We went with the “total opposites” approach and thought Batman and Joker would be a fun “good” vs. “evil” embodiment. And then we went deeper. If there’s light and dark in all of us, how about a few alter ego ideas? Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus, David Bowie and Ziggy Stardust, Beyonce and Sasha Fierce – there’s just something about a split personality! Twins that know their way around a laboratory would look great paired up as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Not much for wielding a scalpel? No worries, Clark Kent and Superman can leap tall buildings in a single bound AND get the Daily Planet their story by five.

Costumes for Twin SISTERS

White Christmas introduced the world to “The Haynes Sisters,” and they have remained the definition of #SisterRelationshipGoals ever since. If you’ve got the chops, pick up a set of ginormous feather fans and take your act on the road! Let’s be real, you secretly feel bad for any non-sister/sister twins because you know how great it is to always have someone by your side. The Thelma to your Louise. The Lucy to your Ethel. The Anna to your Elsa. She’s your partner in crime, the wind beneath your wings, and the encourager of “one more glass of wine,” when you’ve had a rough day. Who else would you want by your side well into the witching hour?

Costumes for Twin BROTHERS

Straight from the crib, you were instant playmates! The biting and kicking each other as babies turned into all night Xbox battles and doing dangerous tricks on your bikes as teens (and probably adults) – through it all, you and your brother are still two peas in a pod. Thanks *in part* to “The Property Brothers,” twin bros have been getting a lot of attention as of late. They have reiterated the sentiment that “yes we look alike, but no, we’re not the same.” Still, there’s nothing wrong with being in sync with each other. Mario and Luigi bonded over Italian food, their careers (plumbing) and a shared annoyance with King Koopa. If you two are less blue collar and more black tie, you could always channel Jake and Elwood. The Blues Brothers need to know how to sing and dance, but they also need a crisp suit, hat, and a pair of sunglasses. No matter what you two decide to be, one thing is for sure: It takes two to make a twin costume go right.

Having twins means double the tiny feet, cooing in stereo, and two times the love. It’s a lot of work, sure, but watching them connect with one another makes it totally worth it. Moms and dads know that their twins are individuals with unique characteristics and qualities, but what mere mortal parents could stop themselves from bringing their kiddos together in matching outfit solidarity – especially when they seem to complete each other so perfectly? None! Even if they could, why start at Halloween? There are just too many adorable twosomes in the world! Those cute little twins go together like peas and carrots, and if you’re asking yourself, “do their baby books need another matchup photo op?” The answer is always YES.

“We go together like rama lama lama ke ding a de ding a dong”

Are you a part of a dynamic duo? Do you dress up with your twin at Halloween? Do twins have more fun? We want to know what you think, as well as get some costume inspo from you! Tell us what you’re going to be for Halloween, and don’t forget to attach a photo. We can’t wait to get twin-spired!

Ken Bones DIY Costume

On Sunday night, October 9th, 2016, the United States officially entered the Bone Zone. Yes, that’s right – something momentous happened at the second presidential debate on CNN that truly united the nation as one. No, it wasn’t a statement by Hillary or a cutting quip by Trump. Last night was the night we learned of… Kenneth Bone, America’s sweetheart, and undecided voter #1. His bright red sweater, his mustache, his earnest question about energy policies, and, of course, his disposable camera – all these things added up to one perfect, beautiful moment in an otherwise ugly debate. Of course, Halloween is dressing up as your favorite hero. See below on how to dress as the USA’s newest superhero: Ken Bone.

Ken Bone at the Debate

DIY Ken Bone Costume

Ken Bones Halloween Costume

Ken Bone Fun Fact #1: He used to manage a Domino’s!

There’s nothing like showing up to a Halloween party with THE most topical costume. The costume that, when you walk in, people exclaim, “Oh, my GOD, I can’t believe you thought of that!” (Uhhh, remember 2015’s green poop, anyone?) Armed with a power stache – matched with a bright red power sweater – Ken helped us all forget partisanship for a few brief moments. So, don’t you want to bring this sense of harmony and fellowship to your costume bash on October 31st? You’ll be making friends across the aisle with this political-but-not-toooooooo-political costume. Don’t forget, Ken showed up to the debate as an undeclared voter, so you can feel free to not break any party faux pas and plead the fifth whenever an inevitable heated election discussion arises.

A simple costume for a great man. Sometimes it only takes a little bit of effort to make a big splash. Did Kenneth Bone know when he woke up that morning that he would become the newest internet sensation to trend on Twitter? No, probably not. He even said that the red sweater wasn’t even his first choice, and he only wore it because the pants of the suit he was originally planning on wearing split! Oh, Ken! You’re just like us! Our DIY is easy, no stress. One: Slap a mustache and some glasses on that face. (We used these Santa glasses and painted them black.) Two: Red sweater, DUH. (Thrift store!) Three:  Grab a disposable camera and a microphone. (Our Anchorman mic was perfect after we took off the outside parts and painted the top black.) Then you’re literally done. Walk around your party asking people how they plan to remedy the energy crisis in our country today and how that will affect the coal industry and you’re set. You’ve won Halloween, just as Ken Bone won the presidential debate.

Ken Bone Fun Fact #3: He was in a band! (They rocked.)

Don’t forget to walk around the party with that camera, snapping pictures of everyone you see, from Tiffany to Bill to silver fox Anderson Cooper to all the dumbstruck audience members in shock of what they just witnessed.

Who is Ken Bone?

Alright, maybe you skipped the debate last night. (We heard that the new episode of Westworld was very good!) But you wanna join in on the newest internet craze. We get it! FOMO is multiplied by a thousand when someone named Ken BONE is involved. To get you up to speed, here are our favorite memes and tweets inspired by #KenBone.

That last one isn't a meme, it's the actual first tweet by Ken himself! Just a few days before his rise to fame, he was spending his time empowering pop star Ariana Grande. What CAN'T you do, Ken?!

Ken Bone Shepard Fairey

Ken Bone Twitter

Ken himself has set his Twitter avatar as a version of the classic Shepard Fairey “HOPE” image of Obama from his 2008 campaign. If you wanna take your Bone Zone costume a step FURTHER, why not recreate that? We have a tutorial blog post right here on how to do this makeup on yourself. Then all you need is some poster board to create a makeshift frame to carry around yourself and a magic marker to write BONE on the bottom.

There you have it, folks! This is our vote for one of the best topical Halloween costumes of 2016! Are you dressing up as Ken for Halloween? What other newsworthy costume ideas are you cooking up? Let us know in the comments! If you are looking for something a little bit more, uhhh, non-meme, take a look our Donald and Hillary costume guide here.

Halloween Costumes for Work

There are two kinds of people in this world: Those who LOVE Halloween festivities at work … and those who (gasp) don’t. If you’re in the “pro” column, it’s likely because you dig the camaraderie and change of pace. Or you’re like us: You are a Halloween freak. We love All Hallow’s Eve and celebrate it anywhere we can … ESPECIALLY at work. We’re a costume company, after all – it’s not just welcomed, it’s expected! The other side of the coin isn’t just for buzzkills and party-poopers, though. It’s where stock brokers, doctors, and other “important types” reside. Frankly, you’re right. We took a poll at HC’s headquarters and only two people said they’d be okay with a clown driving their ambulance. Still, it’s not an open and shut case. Whether you’re an accountant, big time sales manager, or Kindergarten teacher, we believe that you can infuse a little trick or treat flair into your ensemble on October 31st. Read on to find out the best costume for your job type!

OUTFIT INSPIRATIONS

Hardworking Lady Costume - Shop     Waldo Costume - Shop     Cat Costume - Shop

Grease Costume - Shop     Doctor Who Costume - Shop

Best for which professions: Upper management (you’re still “fun,” but also authoritative), anyone who is conducting a board meeting in the afternoon, grade school teachers (wardrobe malfunctions are often frowned upon at this level), moms, sales reps, and administrative support staff.

What is it? Picking out clothing pieces straight from your closet, and coordinatingeverydayaccessories to capture the essence of your favorite character.

Examples:YES WE CAN put together a Rosie the Riveter costume with a pair of jeans, a denim shirt, a classic red bandana and a head full of pin curls! And of course, a gal never goes wrong with a black cat (or mouse, or bunny or any other cuddly creature) look – all it takes is head to toe black basics and ears.“I’m a mouse, duh.”

Why it’s great: You are presentable, comfortable, and can still perform all of your job functions. No one is going to accuse you of being a stick-in-the-mud, but you also save yourself from any costume mishaps.

T-SHIRT COSTUMES

Batman - Shop     Ninja Turtles - Shop     Star Trek - Shop     Ghostbusters - Shop     Boba Fett - Shop     Toy Story - Shop

Best for which professions:EVERY profession, but especially daycare workers, nurses (pediatric nurses get the most attention in costume), cashiers, waiters/waitresses, bank tellers, hairstylists, mail carriers, dental assistants. and real estate agents.

What is it?Character-printed t-shirts with basic/optional accessories.

Examples:The “Secret of the Ooze” only mutated a chosen few, so pick your favorite hero in a half shell and add the coordinating eye mask … or not! Either way, you’ll fit right in with Master Splinter’s rat pack. Superheroes are not born; they’re made! You could slip into some of Superman’s signature spandex OR you could pull on a comfy Superman T-shirt with attached cape – the choice seems pretty clear for those standing on their feet all day.Maybe you are looking for intergalactic action instead. You’d be guaranteed a place on the Starship Enterprise with an officially licensed Starfleet uniform shirt – Are you ready to get beamed up?

Why it’s great:Cozy, cotton construction, character authenticity and they look great with a simple pair of jeans … The real question is, what’s NOT great about a T-shirt costume? In fact, we have found that they are a surefire way to get a reluctant costume-wearer to join the festivities. Sorry fellas, no more excuses.

FULL-ON COSTUMES for Work

Marty McFly - Shop     Black Suit Costume - Shop     Housewife Costume - Shop

Lumberjack Costume - Shop     Stormtrooper Costume - Shop     Gorilla Costume - Shop

Best for which professions: Office workers, haunted house operators, creative types (marketing, designers/writers, art directors, actors, etc.), and HalloweenCostumes.com employees.

What is it?Costume, accessories, makeup – the whole shebang! The more elaborate, the better.

Examples:You haven’t been growing out that beard because you follow hipster fashion. It’s manly! Put those whiskers to work in a lumberjack ensemble. An axe prop is required, a blue ox is recommended. Speaking of retro, you could also go Back to the Future with a totally legit Marty McFly costume. Puffer vests, layered shirts, aviators, hover boards, and even some Jennifer Parker arm candy are all only a click away. This would also be a fun opportunity to poke fun at other offices (that are obviously less cool than your office). The Office is full of characters, sure, but we are particularly fond of Mad Men.

Why it’s great:Hosting a celebration that allows complete costume freedom means everyone has a chance to show off his/her creativity. You didn’t know that Bob in accounts payable was a closet Simpsons fan? Now you do! Strike up a meaningful conversation, and maybe next time you’ll get your expense check back faster – win-win!

WORKPLACE COSTUME DOS & DON’TS

  • DO participate in sanctioned activities if Halloween registers on your company’s radar. Not only does it show you are a team player, but it sure beats those Six Sigma spirit animal classes you are sometimes forced to take.
  • DON’T be controversial. No one will giggle at your insensitive costume choice… especially at work. If you’re going to be PC anywhere, this is the place.
  • DO be modest. Undergarments, tights, undershirts, and sweaters can help you steer clear of being the topic of water cooler conversation come November 1st.
  • DON’T bring real weapons. Plastic swords are cool, but real swords will grant you a trip to HR.
  • DO fully immerse yourself in character. Learn catchphrases and backstories to really sell the persona!
  • DON’T be afraid to take chances. Pun costumes, pop culture references, and anything else that will showcase your cleverness is completely encouraged.

Tell us: Does your office do a Halloween party? What is your work-appropriate costume go-to? Do you love celebrating at the office, or not so much? Comment below with your favorite pictures or share with us on our Facebook

History of Halloween in North America Infographic

While we all know that the origins of Halloween didn't quite include Grease costumes or Fun Size Snickers, the other facts and tidbits about the best holiday's history may not be so clear. Where did "trick or treat" really originate and what was the first reference to this tradition in pop culture? Did people really put razors in candy or was that just a hoax? (And did you know that some people threw flour on unsuspecting passersby on All Hallow's Eve?!) To explain just when Halloween appeared in North America and how it evolved into the holiday we know and celebrate today, we created this infographic. We hope you enjoy... if you dare!

Freddy Krueger Infographic

Take a moment to relax. Find a nice, quiet room, and lay down in the dark. Close your eyes. Feel yourself drifting off to sleep… Suddenly, you see a figure off in the distance. The vision is hazy at first, but then he slowly rises into focus. You can see a ragged striped sweater on a tall lurching body. An old brown hat with a wide brim. A sharp ray of light flickers: he has blades coming from his sleeve, like every finger is a knife. Burnt, disfigured skin glistens in the moonlight. Finally, the man of your dreams fully appears in front of you: it’s Freddy Krueger. One of the most infamous movie villains of all time came into the pop culture lexicon in 1984’s A Nightmare on Elm Street and throughout the 9-film franchise, Krueger’s look changed bit-by-bit, burn-by-burn, and other such b-words that Freddy is well-known for spouting. We’ve created this infographic showing the changes, as well as Krueger’s kill count per film and interesting facts about each movie. See for yourself, but whatever you do… don’t fall asleep.

Beware: Spoilers ahead!

DIY Harley Quinn Jumpsuit Look

October 2016 may be dubbed Harleyween, but that doesn’t make us want to dress as her any less this year! It’s no wonder she’s so popular among cosplayers and costume fans – Margot Robbie’s portrayal of the supervillain was the best part of Suicide Squad this August, and the character has been a fan favorite since her first appearance in Batman: The Animated Series in 1992. However, while we think there is nothing wrong with being another Harley at your Halloween party (the more the merrier, puddin’!), we do suggest putting your own twist on it. That’s why for this year, we’ve created an alternate Suicide Squad costume featuring her look from inside the prison: orange jumpsuit, romance novel, and tea cup all included. See below for our full DIY tutorial!

DIY Harley Quinn Costume

Harley Quinn Prison Jumpsuit[source]

There’s just something so cute about Harley daintily sipping tea on her prison cot. Maybe it’s the little pigtail half-buns or maybe it’s the pink fuzzy slippers. Either way, we knew at first glance that this was the costume we wanted to recreate. Last year, we created a DIY cosplay inspired by the first images released from the Suicide Squad set. This look is a little more subdue (less fishnet, less studs, less lethal baseball bats), but just as memorable. As always, the magic is in the details.

The costume part of this tutorial is super simple! We went with this oversized, orange prison jumpsuit for our model – we just zipped it down half way and wore a white t-shirt underneath. The next part was to massacre those poor, cute, little bunny slippers! Chop the ears off, pull the nose and whiskers out, and pop off the plastic eyes. Voila! PLAIN, pink, fuzzy slippers. Grab a few props – like a white, ceramic cup and saucer, along with a tawdry romance novel – and you’re set, outfit wise! The next part is the most fun…

Political Costumes for this Halloween and Election Season

Halloween season has arrived, but but just one week later comes another “YUUGE day” in the USA - Election Day. We know that you’re hip. You’re with it. You read the newspaper. But do your friends know that you’re up with the news? Impress them with these totally unique and interesting costumes. You can straight up replicate the look of Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, or you can go a more interesting route. Here are some ideas for your Halloween.

Election 2016

Let’s start with the obvious - dressing up as the candidates. Has there ever been a year where dressing up as these human caricatures has been this fruitful? Take these accessories and add them to your best (pant)suit and have the season’s most topical costume. Also: Yeah, we know Bernie dropped out of the race ages ago, but his hair is just too fun not to imitate.

Historical Costumes

Abraham Lincoln Costume - Shop    Teddy Roosevelt Costume - Shop      Jackie Kennedy Costume - Shop

Ben Franklin Costume - Shop          Betsy Ross Costume - Shop

It’s time for the political deep cuts. Lots of people will be wearing Trump and Hillary costumes this Halloween, but how many people will be paying homage to the creator of the American flag, Betsy Ross? Wow your friends with your fun facts about the creator of the National Parks, Teddy Roosevelt. These costumes will have you looking good and intellectual all at once.

Political Masks

JFK - Shop     Reagan - Shop     Obama - Shop     Hillary - Shop

Nixon - Shop     Bill Clinton - Shop     George Bush - Shop     Trump - Shop

Let’s face it - costumes are hard work. Makeup, hair, getting the right fit. You’re a busy person. You want to be topical, but you also don’t want to spend all day getting ready. Throw these masks on and head to the party. There are some retro looks, such as JFK and Nixon. (You can stage the countries previous most awkward debate with those two! Now the history books won't even mention that one!) Urge your friends to tear down that wall with a Reagan mask or give the old thumbs up with the Bill Clinton mask.

Bizarre political costume ideas

USA Unitard - Shop     Zombie JFK - Shop     Eagle Mask - Shop

Mount Rushmore - Shop     Stars and Stripes Suit - Shop

You strive for the double-take. You want people asking to get a photo with you. These WTF-worthy costumes are for you. Be JFK back from the dead, take over for Teddy on Mount Rushmore (for added comedic effect, combine this costume with our Teddy Roosevelt costume), or just be a bald eagle. ‘Murica!

Kenneth Bone Halloween Costume

Last option? Bring on the ULTRA topical references with this DIY Ken Bone costume we've created. We were inspired by the friendly undecided voter from this month's second presidential debate and created a do-it-yourself look that anyone can replicate! See our blog post for instructions.

We hope this patriotic and presidential guide has helped you at LEAST decide who you're going to be for Halloween. Who to vote for, though? That decision is on you! See all of our political costumes for more inspiration - you can even go back to the founding fathers. We mean, have you heard of this guy Hamilton?
