Banned WWE Moves

How many times have you watched a professional wrestling match and thought, "that CANNOT be safe"? Well, most of the time those moves really are safe, believe it or not. After years of training, the performers in the ring know exactly how to execute each move to only look devastating, while making sure that both the inflictor and receiver walk away with all their bones and limbs intact. However, in the long history of pro-wrestling and, more specifically, the WWE itself, there are a few moves that have popped up that really aren’t safe at all. These moves can have a high-risk of real injury due to the precise timing needed to pull the maneuver off correctly. One forgotten tuck, one split second early or late, one missed cue can have real consequences in these dangerous moves. In this infographic, we show you nine of these banned moves that WWE has forbidden to be performed – tricks that have either been modified to be more safe or are completely banned from the ring itself. From kicks straight to the head to drops right on the head to chairs hit directly to the head, we urge you, don’t try this at home.

There are many, many more moves out there in the world that, while specifically haven't been nixed by the WWE, are probably not too welcome in a professional ring for an event that plays on network TV for family viewing. A quick trip down the rabbithole on Google and YouTube will take you where you wanna go if you're into that sort of thing! The Royal Rumble is coming up on Sunday, January 29th, this year, so you'll want to be prepared. Check out our infographic on Royal Rumble stats to study up. If you want to want to watch the event looking like a pro-wrestler, we have the WWE costumes for you. But, again, please promise not to try Wings of Love on your baby brother. Please.

Lego Batman Cross Stitch Patterns

The Lego Batman Movie is only days away from its theatrical debut and one of the world’s greatest superheroes is back in action. This time, he’s searching for a dangerous Gotham City criminal who is at large and has been known to follow a pattern... Perhaps, a cross stitch pattern. All kidding aside, the new film is highly anticipated and we wanted to share in our excitement by creating Lego Batman themed cross stitch patterns of all the main characters. This classic craft has stayed popular through the decades, and many different types of people love to create art with just some embroidery thread and fabric! Click the pattern that you like, print it out as reference, and start counting those stitches!

Supplies Needed:

  • Cross stitch fabric
  • Embroidery hoop
  • Needle
  • DMC embroidery thread in colors of your choice

Promise us that if you complete any of these projects, you'll send us a picture! We'd love to see them. You could sew your work as patches on a jean vest, you could create a pouch for all your Lego video games to fit into, or you could just trim up the fabric around and hang the embroidery hoops on your wall as art! There are so many options. Also, bonus points if you send us a picture of you creating these crafts while wearing a Batman costume. Please, make this happen.

Halloween Costumes for Work

There are two kinds of people in this world: Those who LOVE Halloween festivities at work … and those who (gasp) don’t. If you’re in the “pro” column, it’s likely because you dig the camaraderie and change of pace. Or you’re like us: You are a Halloween freak. We love All Hallow’s Eve and celebrate it anywhere we can … ESPECIALLY at work. We’re a costume company, after all – it’s not just welcomed, it’s expected! The other side of the coin isn’t just for buzzkills and party-poopers, though. It’s where stock brokers, doctors, and other “important types” reside. Frankly, you’re right. We took a poll at HC’s headquarters and only two people said they’d be okay with a clown driving their ambulance. Still, it’s not an open and shut case. Whether you’re an accountant, big time sales manager, or Kindergarten teacher, we believe that you can infuse a little trick or treat flair into your ensemble on October 31st. Read on to find out the best costume for your job type!

OUTFIT INSPIRATIONS

Hardworking Lady Costume - Shop     Waldo Costume - Shop     Cat Costume - Shop

Grease Costume - Shop     Doctor Who Costume - Shop

Best for which professions: Upper management (you’re still “fun,” but also authoritative), anyone who is conducting a board meeting in the afternoon, grade school teachers (wardrobe malfunctions are often frowned upon at this level), moms, sales reps, and administrative support staff.

What is it? Picking out clothing pieces straight from your closet, and coordinatingeverydayaccessories to capture the essence of your favorite character.

Examples:YES WE CAN put together a Rosie the Riveter costume with a pair of jeans, a denim shirt, a classic red bandana and a head full of pin curls! And of course, a gal never goes wrong with a black cat (or mouse, or bunny or any other cuddly creature) look – all it takes is head to toe black basics and ears.“I’m a mouse, duh.”

Why it’s great: You are presentable, comfortable, and can still perform all of your job functions. No one is going to accuse you of being a stick-in-the-mud, but you also save yourself from any costume mishaps.

T-SHIRT COSTUMES

Batman - Shop     Ninja Turtles - Shop     Star Trek - Shop     Ghostbusters - Shop     Boba Fett - Shop     Toy Story - Shop

Best for which professions:EVERY profession, but especially daycare workers, nurses (pediatric nurses get the most attention in costume), cashiers, waiters/waitresses, bank tellers, hairstylists, mail carriers, dental assistants. and real estate agents.

What is it?Character-printed t-shirts with basic/optional accessories.

Examples:The “Secret of the Ooze” only mutated a chosen few, so pick your favorite hero in a half shell and add the coordinating eye mask … or not! Either way, you’ll fit right in with Master Splinter’s rat pack. Superheroes are not born; they’re made! You could slip into some of Superman’s signature spandex OR you could pull on a comfy Superman T-shirt with attached cape – the choice seems pretty clear for those standing on their feet all day.Maybe you are looking for intergalactic action instead. You’d be guaranteed a place on the Starship Enterprise with an officially licensed Starfleet uniform shirt – Are you ready to get beamed up?

Why it’s great:Cozy, cotton construction, character authenticity and they look great with a simple pair of jeans … The real question is, what’s NOT great about a T-shirt costume? In fact, we have found that they are a surefire way to get a reluctant costume-wearer to join the festivities. Sorry fellas, no more excuses.

FULL-ON COSTUMES for Work

Marty McFly - Shop     Black Suit Costume - Shop     Housewife Costume - Shop

Lumberjack Costume - Shop     Stormtrooper Costume - Shop     Gorilla Costume - Shop

Best for which professions: Office workers, haunted house operators, creative types (marketing, designers/writers, art directors, actors, etc.), and HalloweenCostumes.com employees.

What is it?Costume, accessories, makeup – the whole shebang! The more elaborate, the better.

Examples:You haven’t been growing out that beard because you follow hipster fashion. It’s manly! Put those whiskers to work in a lumberjack ensemble. An axe prop is required, a blue ox is recommended. Speaking of retro, you could also go Back to the Future with a totally legit Marty McFly costume. Puffer vests, layered shirts, aviators, hover boards, and even some Jennifer Parker arm candy are all only a click away. This would also be a fun opportunity to poke fun at other offices (that are obviously less cool than your office). The Office is full of characters, sure, but we are particularly fond of Mad Men.

Why it’s great:Hosting a celebration that allows complete costume freedom means everyone has a chance to show off his/her creativity. You didn’t know that Bob in accounts payable was a closet Simpsons fan? Now you do! Strike up a meaningful conversation, and maybe next time you’ll get your expense check back faster – win-win!

WORKPLACE COSTUME DOS & DON’TS

  • DO participate in sanctioned activities if Halloween registers on your company’s radar. Not only does it show you are a team player, but it sure beats those Six Sigma spirit animal classes you are sometimes forced to take.
  • DON’T be controversial. No one will giggle at your insensitive costume choice… especially at work. If you’re going to be PC anywhere, this is the place.
  • DO be modest. Undergarments, tights, undershirts, and sweaters can help you steer clear of being the topic of water cooler conversation come November 1st.
  • DON’T bring real weapons. Plastic swords are cool, but real swords will grant you a trip to HR.
  • DO fully immerse yourself in character. Learn catchphrases and backstories to really sell the persona!
  • DON’T be afraid to take chances. Pun costumes, pop culture references, and anything else that will showcase your cleverness is completely encouraged.

Tell us: Does your office do a Halloween party? What is your work-appropriate costume go-to? Do you love celebrating at the office, or not so much? Comment below with your favorite pictures or share with us on our Facebook

History of Halloween in North America Infographic

While we all know that the origins of Halloween didn't quite include Grease costumes or Fun Size Snickers, the other facts and tidbits about the best holiday's history may not be so clear. Where did "trick or treat" really originate and what was the first reference to this tradition in pop culture? Did people really put razors in candy or was that just a hoax? (And did you know that some people threw flour on unsuspecting passersby on All Hallow's Eve?!) To explain just when Halloween appeared in North America and how it evolved into the holiday we know and celebrate today, we created this infographic. We hope you enjoy... if you dare!

Freddy Krueger Infographic

Take a moment to relax. Find a nice, quiet room, and lay down in the dark. Close your eyes. Feel yourself drifting off to sleep… Suddenly, you see a figure off in the distance. The vision is hazy at first, but then he slowly rises into focus. You can see a ragged striped sweater on a tall lurching body. An old brown hat with a wide brim. A sharp ray of light flickers: he has blades coming from his sleeve, like every finger is a knife. Burnt, disfigured skin glistens in the moonlight. Finally, the man of your dreams fully appears in front of you: it’s Freddy Krueger. One of the most infamous movie villains of all time came into the pop culture lexicon in 1984’s A Nightmare on Elm Street and throughout the 9-film franchise, Krueger’s look changed bit-by-bit, burn-by-burn, and other such b-words that Freddy is well-known for spouting. We’ve created this infographic showing the changes, as well as Krueger’s kill count per film and interesting facts about each movie. See for yourself, but whatever you do… don’t fall asleep.

Beware: Spoilers ahead!

DIY Harley Quinn Jumpsuit Look

October 2016 may be dubbed Harleyween, but that doesn’t make us want to dress as her any less this year! It’s no wonder she’s so popular among cosplayers and costume fans – Margot Robbie’s portrayal of the supervillain was the best part of Suicide Squad this August, and the character has been a fan favorite since her first appearance in Batman: The Animated Series in 1992. However, while we think there is nothing wrong with being another Harley at your Halloween party (the more the merrier, puddin’!), we do suggest putting your own twist on it. That’s why for this year, we’ve created an alternate Suicide Squad costume featuring her look from inside the prison: orange jumpsuit, romance novel, and tea cup all included. See below for our full DIY tutorial!

DIY Harley Quinn Costume

Harley Quinn Prison Jumpsuit[source]

There’s just something so cute about Harley daintily sipping tea on her prison cot. Maybe it’s the little pigtail half-buns or maybe it’s the pink fuzzy slippers. Either way, we knew at first glance that this was the costume we wanted to recreate. Last year, we created a DIY cosplay inspired by the first images released from the Suicide Squad set. This look is a little more subdue (less fishnet, less studs, less lethal baseball bats), but just as memorable. As always, the magic is in the details.

The costume part of this tutorial is super simple! We went with this oversized, orange prison jumpsuit for our model – we just zipped it down half way and wore a white t-shirt underneath. The next part was to massacre those poor, cute, little bunny slippers! Chop the ears off, pull the nose and whiskers out, and pop off the plastic eyes. Voila! PLAIN, pink, fuzzy slippers. Grab a few props – like a white, ceramic cup and saucer, along with a tawdry romance novel – and you’re set, outfit wise! The next part is the most fun…

The pink and blue pigtails, the powdery, white face, the little black heart on the cheek – all of these details make the Suicide Squad Harley stand out from her other appearances. In this video, our artist takes you step by step on how to recreate this look.

Whichever version you want to be of your favorite, kooky supervillain from the DC universe, make sure you show up with a great big grin, crazy eyes, and a “pleased to meetcha!” for everyone you see.

Political Costumes for this Halloween and Election Season

Halloween season has arrived, but but just one week later comes another “YUUGE day” in the USA - Election Day. We know that you’re hip. You’re with it. You read the newspaper. But do your friends know that you’re up with the news? Impress them with these totally unique and interesting costumes. You can straight up replicate the look of Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, or you can go a more interesting route. Here are some ideas for your Halloween.

Election 2016

Let’s start with the obvious - dressing up as the candidates. Has there ever been a year where dressing up as these human caricatures has been this fruitful? Take these accessories and add them to your best (pant)suit and have the season’s most topical costume. Also: Yeah, we know Bernie dropped out of the race ages ago, but his hair is just too fun not to imitate.

Historical Costumes

Abraham Lincoln Costume - Shop    Teddy Roosevelt Costume - Shop      Jackie Kennedy Costume - Shop

Ben Franklin Costume - Shop          Betsy Ross Costume - Shop

It’s time for the political deep cuts. Lots of people will be wearing Trump and Hillary costumes this Halloween, but how many people will be paying homage to the creator of the American flag, Betsy Ross? Wow your friends with your fun facts about the creator of the National Parks, Teddy Roosevelt. These costumes will have you looking good and intellectual all at once.

Political Masks

JFK - Shop     Reagan - Shop     Obama - Shop     Hillary - Shop

Nixon - Shop     Bill Clinton - Shop     George Bush - Shop     Trump - Shop

Let’s face it - costumes are hard work. Makeup, hair, getting the right fit. You’re a busy person. You want to be topical, but you also don’t want to spend all day getting ready. Throw these masks on and head to the party. There are some retro looks, such as JFK and Nixon. (You can stage the countries previous most awkward debate with those two! Now the history books won't even mention that one!) Urge your friends to tear down that wall with a Reagan mask or give the old thumbs up with the Bill Clinton mask.

Bizarre political costume ideas

USA Unitard - Shop     Zombie JFK - Shop     Eagle Mask - Shop

Mount Rushmore - Shop     Stars and Stripes Suit - Shop

You strive for the double-take. You want people asking to get a photo with you. These WTF-worthy costumes are for you. Be JFK back from the dead, take over for Teddy on Mount Rushmore (for added comedic effect, combine this costume with our Teddy Roosevelt costume), or just be a bald eagle. ‘Murica!

Kenneth Bone Halloween Costume

Last option? Bring on the ULTRA topical references with this DIY Ken Bone costume we've created. We were inspired by the friendly undecided voter from this month's second presidential debate and created a do-it-yourself look that anyone can replicate! See our blog post for instructions.

We hope this patriotic and presidential guide has helped you at LEAST decide who you're going to be for Halloween. Who to vote for, though? That decision is on you! See all of our political costumes for more inspiration - you can even go back to the founding fathers. We mean, have you heard of this guy Hamilton?

DIY David Bowie Halloween Costume - Life on Mars? Edition

David Bowie Life on Mars DIY

In January 2016, the world lost David Bowie, one of the most loved, creative, and inspiring individuals of all time. To call him just a musician would leave out all his memorable fashion looks. To call him just a rock star wouldn’t do justice to his acting career. From Labyrinth to Zoolander, from Hunky Dory to Ziggy Stardust, David Bowie left an impression wherever he went and whatever he did. To pay homage to his many iconic looks, we've picked one of our favorites to turn into a DIY Halloween costume. We went with his blue suit and orange hair combo in the "Life on Mars?" video. See below for all the details!

DIY David Bowie Costume

Of all the looks, why did we go with the "Life on Mars?" outfit? It was a very tough decision, but the striking, ice blue suit with matching eyeshadow, platform boots, and fiery orange hair won us over. Maybe next time we'll pull together a Goblin King outfit or recreate the cover of Alladin Sane with the iconic lightning bolt. The video was released in 1973, but the outfit remains memorable to this day.

Life on Mars Cover

The Finished Product

David Bowie Halloween Costume

"It's a god-awful small affair / to the girl with the mousy hair."

For a look so eye-catching, it was fairly easy to put together! The main item, of course, is a blue tuxedo and half an hour or so to apply some amazing makeup. While it doesn't sound so classy and artistic to say, the suit is actually one of our Dumb and Dumber costumes! The boots are loaned from another famous musician: these are our KISS rock and roll platform boots.

Baby Blue Tux - Shop     KISS Starchild Boots - Shop     Orange Hairspray - Shop      70s Housewife Wig - Shop

So, just a few items of crafting! One, to get the most accurate looking boots to match his kicks in the video, we went at those big boys with some black gaffer tape. Be sure to leave a little stripe of silver in there! Two, still in the mood for tape? COOL! Grab red and white and add one line each on the tie to match the video. Easy. Done. Then... makeup and hair! We have a full makeup tutorial below (phew!), but for the hair you have two choices. There's the red joker wig that's the right color, but wrong cut. Aaaaaand the Carol Brady, which is the right cut, but wrong color. You pick your pony, guys. We ended up going with the blonde wig, cutting the top up a bit for that delicious mullet style, and spraying it down with orange color.

Inflatable T-Rex Costume Ideas for Halloween (And Every Day)

We've all seen it. The amazing, unforgettable online videos shared on Facebooks and nightly news segments alike: a person (maybe?) in a giant inflatable Tyrannosaurus Rex costume, cavorting and jumping around town, seemingly unaware of any onlookers around them. This trend is an awesome one, and one we're kind of bummed to admit that we didn't come up with on our own. T. rex's are long extinct, so who's to say that the dinosaurs didn't enjoy playing soccer or going bowling on the weekends? (Scientists? Paleontologists?! Ross Gellar?! Pssh. Prove it.) If you're like us and LOVE these viral videos of inflatable T. rex's going about their business amidst unsuspecting humans, this blog post is for you. Here are favorite instances of T-Rex's in the mainstream; pop culture moments of inflatable, unadulterated bliss.

1. T. Rex Playing Basketball

For years, the mascot of the NBA's Toronto Raptors has cracked up the internet with this one perfect gif.

2. T. Rex on a Bouncy Castle

Last year, a T. Rex costume became available to the masses. All hell broke loose online as T. Rexes started playing in bouncy castles.

3. T. Rex on a Horse

T. Rexes rode horseback... WHILST PLAYING SOCCER!

4. T. Rex Going Bowling

T-Rex bowlingThere were even funny pictures of a T. Rex strike. (Get it?)

5. T. Rexes at an Baseball Game

T Rex In Baseball GameThe MLB got a surprise when they saw this set of dinos in the crowd.

6. T. Rex at the Gym

T-Rex at the gymWhen your workout gets the best of you.....

7. T. Rex Homecoming Queen

That's a video of the Homecoming Queen of a Colorado high school being announced. Later that evening, the candidate went on to win the crown (in her dino-costume).

The Homecoming T-Rex Queen's yellow tutu and red sash got us thinking. Now that the T. Rex costume is everywhere, what other accoutrement can you add to the prehistoric look? First: You need the costume. (Heck yes, we stock it. See above.) Next: ACCESSORIZE! May we humbly suggest drawing inspiration from this redditor:

There's an ocean of opportunity to dress up like a T. rex dressed up like something else! A T. rex cowboy. A T. rex astronaunt. Go licensed and see if you can concoct a Darth Rex or maybe a time-travelling time lord Dino named Doctor Rex. You could go back to the actual TIME of dinosaurs and really freak them out. Send us your best photos and we'll make sure to feature you on our blog or Facebook page! Not a huge Tyrannosaurus Rex fan? We have more dinosaur costumes for everyone!

Maybe one day, shoud be be lucky, you may even achieve T-Rex nirvana...

Mom and Dad of Ainsley Turner -- a.k.a. the “Hot Dog Princess” -- you both deserve a high five! In a world filled to the brim with little princesses-in-training, it’s refreshing when you happen upon a trailblazer – like a hot dog at her dance school’s dress up recital. The bold ballerina from North Carolina blew up the internet this summer with her unique approach to the class’ assignment. Embracing her individuality, Ainsley performed tendu fronts and pliés in full hot-off-the-grill regalia! Best of all, her dad proudly proclaimed that the entire thing was her idea. In short: The Hot Dog Princess rules in the kingdom of costumes!

Hot Dog Princess Costume

Now, we’ve got nothing against princesses. As a matter of fact, if you added up all the princess costumes we sell each year (from Elsa to Ariel, and every Disney royal in between), they’d likely beat any other costume category for little girls. And there is a lot to be said for the pomp and circumstance of a twirly skirt and crown – like that this type of dress-up play can help empower young girls to try new activities or speak up about sensitive subjects (we even know a clever mom who used these coveted layers of tulle and taffeta – with great success – to potty train). Plus, they’re seriously pretty. (Read: BRING ON THE FROUF!) It’s just hard not to adore such a secure little lady! She dared to be different at an age when a girl, typically, tries to gain acceptance by “fitting in.” Want to join our favorite tiny dancer in encased meat solidarity this Halloween? Here’s how to get her social norm-busting look (with a little extra flair to emphasize the reference):

“Ugh, I don’t want to wave a scepter around all night! Where are the guts and gore? It’s Halloween for pumpkin’s sake!” Uh oh, we can tell that you’re a next level type of costume wearer. (And we love that!) You’re absolutely right. There’s no reason to pretend to be songbird sweet when you really prefer to take a walk on the dark side. Let’s zombie-fy this Hot Dog Princess costume! All you have to do is remember to dress to distress. Start with your hot dog costume and tear/tatter or strategically rip the hem for a fresh-from-the-grave appearance. Continue by using a black marker to create “stitch” marks on the bun (it will be easier to see). Give your leggings an undead makeover by adding small holes and allowing the fabric to run. Of course makeup is key, and we’re really digging these face tattoos. (They will get you looking the part in a flash!) Oh yeah, and you can trade in that scepter for a bloody butcher’s knife because, hey, zombies rule with fear, not sparkles and magic spells.

Beauty and the Beast Costume

Is it possible to be distinctive without an overall theme in mind? YES! Remember that scene in Mean Girls when Cady came to the costume party dressed like a zombie bride? She definitely stood out in the sea of sexy animals (“I’m a mouse, duh!”). Actually, if we’re being honest, Cady is our costume mash-up inspiration! Costume mash-ups are always a hit because you can pretty much guarantee that no one else is going to be Séyoncé (Beyoncé meets fortune teller). One of our favorites happens to revisit our princess theme: Beauty and the Beast … except it’s all in one awesome ensemble. Begin with Belle’s iconic gold dress and then splatter some blood on it (give it a few rips for good measure – you’re hulkin’ out, after all). Apply werewolf makeup (and gold contact lenses if you’re a real overachiever), pointy ears and clawed “evening gloves” (we chopped the fingers off of our basic elbow-length gloves and did a yellow manicure with black crackle polish over the top) – bonus points for the lady who dons a pair of sharp chompers. It can be a dude deterrent (not to mention a drink deterrent), but you’ll undoubtedly be a walking photo op.

Still not finding inspiration for a costume that is uniquely you? Take our costume mash-up idea and put your own spin on it! Are you a vampire fiction fan by day and a DJ by night? Try pairing a classic vampire costume with headphones and glow-in-the-dark nail polish. Perhaps you enjoy animation and kitten YouTube videos. Sounds like “Popeye the Sailor Cat” (Popeye’s forearms + Sailor Moon costume + cat ears and whiskers) could be coming soon to a shindig near you! We thought one of our teacher friends had an awesome idea that fit into this category: She slings Shakespeare from 9 to 3, and then plays the bass in her band from 10 ‘til midnight (except on school nights) – so she went the “school of rock” route. A plaid schoolgirl skirt, topped off with her band’s t-shirt, set the stage for amazing presence. She then put her hair in pigtails (held by skull bows for a rockstar vibe) and strapped a guitar to her back. Whenever someone would stop to ask what she was, she’d start playing songs from Schoolhouse Rock. For a look all your own, the sky’s the limit! Simply channel your inner-Ainsley and think outside of the castle.

Guys, we haven’t forgotten about you! We know that for every Hot Dog Princess there is an Iron Man-kini (Iron Man helmet + Borat’s “mankini”) or Marty McFly (denim shirt + orange puffer vest + fly sunglasses + wings) just waiting to strut his stuff -- you’re no straight-outta-the-package Avenger! You’ve got style. Panache. Swagger, even. You know what else you’ve got? YEARS of built-up costume pieces from ghosts of girlfriends past. You once were the Romeo to “her” Juliet. The Mario to Princess Peach. The Adam to Eve. Compile all of the evidence parts and take stock. We’re betting you have everything you need to do a “good vs. evil” character. C’mon, you can do better than devil horns and angel wings! Why so serious? How about “Joke’s on Batman?” (In honor of Ben Affleck’s portrayal, naturally.) To a full face of Heath Ledger’s Joker makeup, combine the caped crusader’s signature cowl and hood. From there, you decide whether it’s going to be Batman’s gauntlets or the Joker’s gloves. Purple suit or muscled jumpsuit, or better yet, purple painted muscle jumpsuit. You get the idea – make it your own.

Hot Dog Princess really is the mascot for the spirit of Halloween because celebrating the holiday is not solely about pranks and candy (though, we DO love mass quantities of peanut butter cups). Sassy, silly, scary -- The real meaning of Halloween is that you can be anything you want, if only for one night (or dance recital). So the next time you feel like your costume isn’t enough, revisit HDP’s story for encouragement and inspiration. She’ll remind you that above all: Be bold. Be a trendsetter. Be a hot dog.

Halloween Costumes for Teachers

Once a year, teachers get to lower the veil between responsible educator and the dirty little fun-havers that they are in real life (or “IRL” as the kids say). But you’re a teacher, and therefore know how to stick to a budget, so shelling out big bucks for a costume just isn’t going to happen. You want a disguise that’s easy, comfortable, appropriate, unique, AND that won’t dip too much into your “Wine While Grading Papers” fund. Well, you’ve come to the right place! We’ve rounded up the best costumes for teachers, and even separated them by specialty … though, if we’re keeping it real, all teachers collectively specialize in one thing: witty comebacks for, “What? I’m just texting my mom!”Hold on to your seats, blackboard bandits– costume school is now in session.

To those who think ring leading Kindergartners seems like SO MUCH FUN, teachers ask: Have you ever had to dislodge a broken crayon from a child’s nose? It isn’t pretty. However, grade school educators usually look at these experiences like “The Frizz” from The Magic School Bus… “Take chances, make mistakes, get messy.” We created the galaxy-themed, Ms. Frizzle dress with these educators in mind. Are you more of a big kid yourself? Items kids are familiar with tend to be instantly hilarious when a teacher dresses up as one of them. Take the aforementioned crayon, for example. There’s nothing funny about a crayon by itself, but it becomes silly when a giant one encapsulates an authority figure! Other oversized favorites that’ll tickle their funny bones include: Food (Kool-Aid Man never fails to impress), planets, and brand personalities (those M&M’s are definite giggle inducers).

The kids know how to read? Well, then you’ve already done a great job! And along the way, your students have likely met their fair share of characters – but nothing brings them to life quite like you do. Not only are you “the voice” when the stories are being read aloud in class, but now you can actually free these characters from their paper prisons and BECOME them! For the mischief-makers, there’s Cat in the Hat. Mother Goose always has a tale to tell. Little Red Riding Hood, Mad Hatter, Babe the Blue Ox, Raggedy Andy, and even Bo Peep’s Sheep– if they exist in a storybook, the matching ensembles are never more than a click away.

Okay, so a lot of your lesson plans focus on the placement of fifty, nifty United States, but Geography class is also responsible for adult-onset wanderlust – you shape the minds of dreamers, adventurers, and travelers! Where’s Waldo? and CarmenSandiego are guaranteed to strike a nostalgic cord, but you could also play with the notion of travel. Space travel, time travel, TIME AND SPACE travel – all characters that open the doors to possibility are all great choices for masters of the maps!

George Washington again? Gee, no one saw that coming. Besides, we’re still kind of miffed that all the cherry tree drivel you sold us as kids was a fib (though we are less bitter about that than Pluto’s fall from planetary grace).Your students are expecting a historical figure, but why not give them an excellent history lesson ala Bill and Ted?!Being a ‘WyldStallyn” isn’t for everyone (definitely not English teachers), but we’re betting you might still have some beat up Chucks and a pair of well-worn black jorts in the back of your closet somewhere. Find a Bill S. Preston, Esquire and you have a really fun buddy costume. “Can you tell me where we might find some personages of historical significance?” Convince the entire department (or involve other departments if necessary) to recreate Bill and Ted’s “historical runway.” Abe Lincoln, Joan of Arc, and Napoleon were notable standouts, but you can add in as many as you deem necessary to crank the “EPIC costume meter” up to 11!

SCIENCE TEACHER COSTUMES

Honestly, scientists have gotten a bad rep from pop culture. If you’re not slinging corpse parts to assemble and reanimate a Franken-man in your basement, then you’re a meth-lab-on-wheels owner ala Walter White from Breaking Bad. Sounds like the “creative types” have a little intellectual jealousy, if you ask us. Oh well, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em– besides, there’s no better place than school to let your nerd flag fly! A lab coat and a wild wig instantly transforms you into Albert Einstein the same way powered armor makes you Iron Man … And while Iron Man is “technically” a nerd, he’s also a superhero scientist! This would also be a good place to note: To date, there are no “quarterback superheroes” in the Marvel Universe.

As a wielder of words, it’s no doubt that you are taking “finding the perfect Halloween costume for school” very seriously. Communication is kinda your thing, and you want to let the world know just how entertaining you are! The Harry Potter series is an instant muse, but you may not be “art teacher” enough to pull off Mrs. Trelawny. No problem! Minerva McGonagall has a special place in every kid’s heart. Tall, dark and mysterious – sure you are, Voldemort! From Hermione to Dobby, The School of Witchcraft and Wizardry has seemingly endless possibilities.Hold up, do you hear that? It’s Rue’s Whistle calling! Katniss Everdeen serves up a little edge … and is, unsurprisingly, very effective at keeping students in line (expert archery skills will do that). Of course, whatever you do, don’t leave out the classics! Romeo and his Juliet, Jacob Marley, Hester Prynne, Jay Gatsby, and Daisy Buchanan – they all stand the test of time and are great investment pieces. Buy a really good Gatsby-style costume now, and wear it several times throughout your career.

When using that cranium of yours to brainstorm what to dress as for the quickly approaching Halloween holiday, many people choose to use their own best features and accentuate them. Whether it’s your strong muscles - in which you must find a sleeveless costume - or it’s your long, curly blonde locks that can’t possibly be covered by a wig or a hat accessory. We all have personal features and attributes about ourselves that our costumes must stem from and in this case it’s your round, shiny, noggin. Now, this isn’t any ol’ noggin, it’s yours. Unique and different than the bald guy’s next to you. Let this forum be your guide as a helpful tool and level of baldness determiner so you can achieve that one of a kind costume!

To start out the guide on an evil note and breaking the rules a bit, we might as well name He Who Shall Not Be Named: Lord Voldemort.  For you bald Harry Potter fans out there, you’re probably freaking out at the mention of his name, but hey, there are limited costumes for your baldness, so consider it. This DIY costume is pretty simple (actually all of them are), but luckily an exact replica of his cloak is available straight from our hearts to yours. Give yourself some hybrid witch/werewolf hands and slap a wand in them and, BOOM, Lord Voldemort. Don’t forget to apply a thin layer of white face/body paint to your entire face and neck to really give people the creeps.

Now, in our opinion, our next candidate is one of our all-time favorites. The infamous Dr. Evil from the Austin Powers movies has swept the nation and can easily be recognized by anyone and everyone. Find yourself a square shouldered gray suit, a flashy pinky ring, and some black dress shoes. Sport that dashing pinky finger near and dear to your pursed lips all night long and once again you’ve conquered the quest of having the best costume out of your friends, while being bald!

Styled in a simple blue collared shirt buttoned only on top, a classic white tee, and a light purple bandana tied nice and tight, you’re outfit is all set accompanied by your bare noodle up top. Feel free to grab your child and replicate a Mini Me version while playing your necessary sound track for the night, Hard Knock Life. Your costume will be off the charts. Out of this world. Our first character in this category is our beloved Homer Simpson from The Simpsons. If you’re both a family man and don’t mind grasping a beer can in your hand all evening long, then continue reading. A first helpful step if you’re not into full body art like some, grab yourself a yellow morph suit that will transform your skin tone into a fabulous, florescent Simpson hue. Now that your base step is accomplished, slide into a white polo and blue pants along with some black shoes. Your outfit part of this transformation is now complete. Upwards and onwards to focus on the classic Homer Simpson mug. You can forget about adding a pop-out like muzzle to your mouth area (brownie points to you if you create this look, or should we say donut points). Begin by coloring your entire face and neck; don’t forget to paint your perfectly bare think tank! Next, leave a circle around your mouth bare skinned to replicate Homer’s unique mouth.  Carefully paint white circles around your eyes to make them appear large like Homer's. Voila! Pair this look with a donut flask and you’re set for the evening. Mmm, donut.

This complete Shrek look should be paired with plaid trousers, a white rugged long sleeve t-shirt, and a vest and belt. Give yourself large ogre hands to guarantee yourself the biggest scoops of candy and go to town again on that green face paint! Or stay at the swamp, either or.

If you have a bald best friend as well, pay attention to this next dynamic duo. There is nothing more lovable than a cute, little Minion.  And everyone who has seen Despicable Me knows that Gru is a big softy inside. This is where you and your best bud come into play. You might need to toss the ol’ rock, paper, scissors game between the two of you when deciding who is who, but regardless which character you end up being, both have perks. For Gru, pair your smoothly shaven skull with a pair of black pants, black shoes, gray pull-over sweater, and a gray striped scarf. Hold some dynamite and (light bulb!) you’re Gru! As for being a Minion, a crisp pair of blue overalls, again with that fluorescent yellow morph suit, and some killer specs and your costume is as good as gold! Literally.

Alien Heights Infographic

Ever wonder how your favorite alien species from pop culture stack up against each other? We like to imagine just what would go down if they would happen to cross franchises and go toe-to-toe with a species from another movie or TV series. Like, what would happen if Alf waltzed onto the set of Sesame Street and started sizing up Gonzo? (Hint: Alf has the height advantage.) Or what if old school sci-fi aliens faced off, like The Man from Planet X versus the mutant from This Island Earth? We're not sure what would be the bigger advantage, the glass helmet or super-sized brain!? And when it comes to the action packed sci-fi on the big screen, there's all kinds of heavy duty - and terrifying - creatures that could ruin anyone's day. The arachnid bugs from Starship Troopers, the terrifying xenomorphs from Alien, the rancor from Return of the Jedi, or even the the straight up meanies fromID4... well, we hope we never come to face to face with something the likes of them.

The question remains, though, just how would they measure up against each other in the height department? Well, wonder no more, because our crack research team combed the internet to find the true heights (or highly educated guesses...) of a ton of the all-time most iconic species across TV and film history. Of course, with the breadth of material, we couldn't include all species, so we settled on picking out the most iconic non-human species, along with some all-time staff favorites, to round out lineup on our infographic. So, whether you spend you downtime thinking about Science Fiction and could use a handy alien fact sheet or even if you need a guide to help you pick out the right costume for your intergalactic themed Halloween fun, we are proud to present the internet's most definitive alien height chart!

DIY Stranger Things Costumes

If you are anything like the crew at HalloweenCostumes.com, there’s around an eight-hour gap missing from your life in the middle of last July. What happened in those hours? Well, friends, Stranger Things happened. On July 15th, 2016, Netflix launched the entire first season of their original show, an 80s-influenced sci-fi series that featured a group of D&D-playing middle schoolers, an alcoholic police chief, a psychokinetic little girl named after a number, and an internet fan-favorite named Barb. There’s so much to love about Stranger Things– the music, the characters, the nods and homages to all of our favorite creepy movies growing up, Steve… – so, it’s no wonder that this show is one of the biggest costume trends of the year. We obviously wanted to play along, but we knew we had to do something a little outside the box to compete with the other super creative cosplays out there. So we decided to start from the beginning…

*spoilers in this post!*

DIY Stranger Things Logo Costume

Stranger Things Opening Credits Gif

The second that the first glowing red letter hit the screen, we knew that the opening credits for Stranger Things were going to be something special. Part of it reminded us of Stephen King and part of it reminded us of The Thing; altogether, it was a perfect recreation of all things retro-spooky. So, of course, our first thought was… “That HAS to be a costume.” We started drafting up plans for a glowing, moving, group costume version of the Stranger Things logo. Here’s what we did.

Finished Product

DIY Stranger Things Logo Costume

Cool, huh?! This costume took a lot of cardboard, a lot of spray paint, and a lot of X-Acto knifing, but it was 100% worth it. This group costume takes three people who are willing to wear all black body suits in order to get that amazing, spooky dark screen effect.

Stranger Things DIY"Why are you keeping this curiosity door locked?!"

DIY Instructions

DIY Stranger Things Costume Instructions

Items Needed:

  • Thin, square cardboard boxes.
  • X-Acto knives.
  • Printed stencils of the letters.
  • Black spray paint.
  • Black gaffe tape.
  • Red cellophane. (We found this in the Christmas section of a hobby shop!)
  • White Christmas lights.
  • Thick black straps.
  • Black second skin suits.

Step One: The first thing we did is get a large version of the logo from a printing store. Here is the font generator! Just make sure that the measurements line up with the size boxes you have and can be split into three parts.

Step Two: Tape each section onto the boxes. Line the boxes up before you start cutting to make sure they will line up evenly across.

Step Three: Start cutting! Leave little pillars open in the letters – you just want to cut out the outlines of the words, so you need the inside parts to remain cardboard. (See image above for reference.)

Step Four: Spray paint!! Cover the whole thing – front, back and sides – with black spray paint. Make sure to get a few coats on there so no cardboard color can be seen through.

Step Five: Add about three sheets of red cellophane to the inside of the box. That way, when the lights shine through, they’ll glow a perfect red. We just used black tape to secure it on the inside.

Step Six: Use more tape or a staple gun to attach the black strap to the inside of the front back and the inside of the back box to create a sandwich board to wear over your shoulders. (To see what’s on the back, keep reading…)

Step Seven: Last one! Drop some Christmas lights into each box and turn them on! And you’ve done it! A living, breathing, Stranger Things logo. Wear those black body suits and slowly come together with your friends to reenact the opening sequence. Spoooookyyyy!!!

DIY Stranger Things Christmas Light Wall

Stranger Things Christmas Lights

Okay, so we couldn’t just stop there. Remember how we said that there are amazing cosplays out there? We cannot be topped by them! We’re HalloweenCostumes.com, for goodness’ sake. SO – while you see a spooky, creepy logo in the FRONT, this group costume will feature the famous alphabet wall (WITH Christmas lights, of course) on the back! Whaaaat!

Finished Product

Stranger Things Wall Costume

We used three more of the same size cardboard boxes to create the back half of each sandwich board contraption. (Lucky for us that we have an entire warehouse in the office where we ship thousands of costume orders every day! We know that you can find these at any local post office or shipping store, too.) A bit more spray paint, a few wallpaper stencils, some Christmas lights, and this easy DIY will be a very effective one, for both winning a Halloween contest AND for communicating with your friends in the Upside Down. R. U. N!

DIY Instructions

Stranger Things Christmas Lights Costume DIY

Items Needed:

  • Three cardboard boxes.
  • Beige and brown spray paint.
  • Black paint.
  • Paint brush.
  • Flower stencils.
  • Small, multi-colored Christmas lights. (Bulbs, please!)
  • Black second skin suits.

Stranger Things Alphabet Wall

Step One: Spray paint the boxes all one beige-y color to mimic the dingy walls of the Byers home.

Step Two: Take your flower stencil and use it to spray paint some designs on the walls with the darker brown. Make sure they aren’t all even across; you can even do half on one edge of the box and half on another!

Step Three: Paint on the alphabet. Take this as an opportunity to re-watch the whole series to know exactly where Joyce Byers places each letter.

Step Four: String up the Christmas lights! We’re, uh, a little passionate about the details, so we took the time to rewire these bulbs so each letter only had one light above it. Then, we cut holes in the side of the boxes so we could place the little battery pack/on-off switch for easy access while wearing the costume. (See image above for reference.)

Step Five: Wait for the messages from the Upside Down to start…

Eleven and Christmas Lights from Stranger Things"Should I stay or should I go now?"

Stranger Things CostumeThere's real boys in there! Don't worry!

DIY Eleven from Stranger Things Halloween Costume

Eleven Eating Eggos

There are lots of amazing characters in Stranger Things. Hopper, Steve, Dustin (duh), but no one stands out more than the one and only Eleven. Maybe it’s because Millie Bobby Brown is an incredible actress who knocks it out of the park, maybe it’s because the character is written so compellingly you half-can’t wait/half-are afraid to find out what her past is. All we know is that Eleven Halloween costumes are rivalling only Harley Quinn for popularity this year. We, of course, had to get in on the fun.

Eleven Cosplay from Stranger Things"She's our friend and she's crazy!"

The best thing about this costume is that it’s super easy! You don’t need much crafting time at all. ALSO – you don’t need to shave your head. Remember, Elle dons that old wig when she goes with the boys to school. However, the Eggos are not an option. Bring those breakfast treats with you!

Another key detail to this costume – a bloody nose. Poor Eleven’s powers take a toll on her body, and whenever she gets some psychic work done, her nose starts to bleed.. Probably not good for the brain, huh? Eleven is the sweetest government experiment we’ve ever known and we really hope that those Eggos that Hopper left in the woods means that we haven’t seen the last of her.

Zootopia DIY Costumes Header

Every year, there’s at least one new movie that inspires a popular new Halloween costume for kids. Whether it’s Minions, Elsa from Frozen, or even an inflatable T-Rex costume from Jurassic World, once the children see them, they want to be that character. 2016 was no different with several popular children’s films like Disney’s Zootopia and Finding Dory along with Universal’s The Secret Life of Pets that were released featuring several popular characters who are soon to be worn as several popular Halloween costumes. Animal costumes are always a well-loved option among children and each of these movies provided animal costume ideas for many characters.

Zootopia was the biggest hit of the year, passing 2003’s Finding Nemo as the highest-grossing original animated film of all time and earning over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. The film follows the unlikely duo of Zootopia’s first bunny police officer, Judy Hopps, and the sly fox, Nick Wilde, as they work together to uncover the mystery of who is causing the animals of Zootopia to turn evil. The two make a formidable pair, as well as a pair of cute Halloween costumes. We’ve put together some fun DIY tutorials to create some adorable Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde cosplay. Check them out below!

Judy Hopps in zootopia

[source]

In the movie, Judy Hopps is thrilled to make it through training to become the first bunny police officer in Zootopia. However, her excitement is tempered upon learning that her first beat is parking meter duty. On the other hand, the position is what led her to meeting Nick Wilde in the first place so, in hindsight, it ended up being a good thing for her.

Nick Wilde in Zootopia

When it comes to being sly as a fox, Nick Wilde is the ultimate scam artist. When we meet Nick in the movie, he’s pulling off a scam with his small partner-in-crime, Finnick. After being caught red-handed by Officer Hopps, he is forced to assist her in solving her mystery in order to avoid jail time.

David Pumpkins Halloween Costume

We’re going all in on David S. Pumpkins. Obviously, after watching last night’s Saturday Night Live, one skit stood out to us. That skit? David. S. Pumpkins. Any questions?? In the 100 Floors of Fright, they can’t all be winners, buuuuut this DIY Halloween costume will hopefully be as memorable as the two b-boy skeletons and Tom Hanks as David Pumpkins, whoever that is. Here’s how to dress in this easy, funny, yet somewhat confusing group costume, inspired by the instant-classic from SNL. Now hold on for dear death!!

David S. Pumpkins Halloween Costume

The Inspiration

David Pumpkins SNL

"How's it hanging? I'm David Pumpkins!"

First of all, do yourself a favor and watch the skit right now. Does it make sense? Well, no. But is it funny? YES. Hailed as an instant Halloween classic, David S. Pumpkins finds himself among the ranks of Candygram and Adam Sandler’s Halloween costume ideas on Weekend Update. (You know. “Hey, I’m squishy man! And I want some candy!!”) It’s the perfect mix of absurd and, uh… we guess just absurd. But in 2016, with all the ups and downs and stresses we’ve gone through, don’t we deserve a skit like David Pumpkins as the year winds down? WE DO. David Pumpkins is that hero we need and deserve.

The Finished Product

I'm David Pumpkins"Why did you go all in on David Pumpkins?!"

While you’re busy trying to wrap your head around David Pumpkins (no, you’re not supposed to know who he is), we’ll help you plan this DIY costume. Get that music ready, papi…

David Pumpkins Tom Hanks

“And David Pumpkins Is?...” “His own thing!”

We fully admit that the costume itself is not too hard (that’s good!), but it’s the attitude and dance moves that will sell it. We have this pumpkin print Opposuit that is peeeeerfect for David. Pair it with a black button up dress shirt, add a streak of blonde to your dark curly hair (we cut up this mullet wig!), and soon people will be asking if you’re from a local commercial or something.

Skeletons from David Pumpkins

“And the skeletons are?...” “Part of it!!”

The skeletons take a bit more time, but seriously not a ton. Use this Beetlejuice makeup kit to paint your face. All white all over, and then black around the eyes and on the nose. Scary, huh? This is a whole blog post of frights, babe, we’re probably screaming, too. The mad scientist wig completes the look, but don’t forget to add that white yoga headband. (Weird? Why are they wearing those? We have several questions about this skit.)

“Ready or not, here we … dance?!”

Do it! Please! We’re telling you right now that putting this costume together in our photo studio was one of the best moments of our life. We just couldn’t stop dancing, right after we scared the hell outta all our friends. Sooo – that means you’ll have an absolute blast if you go to a Halloween party dressed as these three weirdos. Yum!!

75 years ago, DC introduced us to a new powerhouse in the comic book realm. Wonder Woman. This Amazon princess instantly won over readers. She had it all, beauty, smarts and strength.
