People express themselves in many different ways. Some sculpt, some draw, some compose, some sing, and some… design intricate costumes based on existing characters and wear them around, dazzling and mystifying spectators.

With cosplay, what often starts as a hobby may quickly evolve into something else entirely. For some, it has even become a livelihood, either through selling handmade products or being discovered by companies and hired on to become the  official cosplayer for a particular character!

What IS A Cosplayer?

Cosplay is a term derived from “Costume Play”, and is used to describe those who dress up in costume, most often as characters from Japanese animation (anime) or video games, among many other things. The possibilities are as numerous as there are movie and TV characters, and the reactions to these ensembles can range from “well…you did your best” to “holy-! How did you manage that?!”

Don’t believe me? Well I’ve picked out a few that you’re bound to enjoy. These jaw-dropping, gorgeous costumes are often hand-made by their dedicated wearers, and presented at conventions across the world.

Neal Bockhaut

While some make their costumes by hand with cardboard and whatever else they can find, Neal Bockhaut, or NealBomBad on deviantart.com used his own method; 3D printing. 3D printers are growing in popularity and after seeing what they can do, I’m not shocked to see why! He says it took over 500 hours of printing time and many more spent priming and sanding to strengthen the plastic pieces. This amazing picture features not a figurine or game graphic, but Neal actually inside his costume. It’s Cecil Harvey, Dark Knight from Final Fantasy IV, and it’s very impressively done.

Ex-Shadow

Ex-Shadow as Vash the Stampede from Trigun

Kyle, aka Ex-Shadow, is a 27 year old guy whose hobbies include art, video games, and anime. What better way is there to combine those interests than cosplay?

He has made many costumes, including his favorite character, Vash the Stampede, from the popular show Trigun (which used to air on Adult Swim years ago). He runs a Facebook page that he updates with his latest costumes, including the status of his works in progress, which offers newbies great insight into how to make their own. Malindachan

Malindachan as Link from Legend of Zelda

This 24 year old has been cosplaying since 2004, and made a name for herself quickly. Malindachan attended a convention for the first time in 2007 and quickly found herself sought after and invited to more. She frequently wins awards for her costumes and participation in skits.

She has done a lot of big name titles, including Kingdom Hearts, Legend of Zelda, and Final Fantasy, and looks great in every single one. Sometimes it’s really hard to pick a piece to showcase! But I finally decided on her Link from the Legend of Zelda, with the awesome nature backdrop. With a strong interest in wigs, she offers visitors a deviantART page with lots of tutorials and tips.

Yaya Han

Yaya Han as Fiora from League of Legends

It is entirely possible to turn cosplay into a career, as proven by Yaya Han, a well-known figure in the Costume Play world. She’s often invited to conventions to run panels and speak to fans about her work and technique. She mixes things up with a combination of existing characters and original work, showcasing her talent in every single piece, including this one of Fiora from League of Legends.

Kyosti Kallio

Kyosti Kallio as Zombie Iron Man

A lot of these costumes have been perfectly accurate down to the last little detail, but that’s definitely not a requirement. I’ve seen steampunk Link (Legend of Zelda) and twisted Disney princesses galore, but this a particularly interesting one.

Kyosti Kallio put a little twist on Iron Man and thought about what would happen if he were to be infected by a zombie virus. Well, the result is pretty cool.

Mike La Jute Blanche

Mike La Jute Blanche as The Predator from Predator

Can you believe this is not a movie prop? It’s Mike La Jute Blanche, a French cosplayer who is simply amazing. He’s also been sighted as an strikingly accurate Piccolo from Dragonball, green skinned and all, and has been rumored to rip out people’s spines as a Mortal Combat player. He even keeps a spine prop around for pictures!

Layze Michelle

Laahmichelle as Princess Zelda from Twilight Princess

Sometimes what impresses me most are the locations people find to actually take their pictures, and this is a wonderful example. Here we find Twilight Princess’s Princess Zelda in her natural habitat of a castle. Laahmichelle is only 19 years old and lives in Brazil, showing us another amazing case of cosplay from around the world.

Melanie Colley

Melanie Colley as Zant from Twilight Princess

I seem to be going on a Legend of Zelda spree, but I can’t help it with all these amazing costumes to present! Melanie Colley, otherwise known as shinigami714, leaves me no choice but to show off this highly detailed Zant costume, which won best in show and best workmanship at Anime North 2013. The mask and blades are simply wonderful, and the makeup gives it the perfect finishing touch; definitely deserving of a few contest wins!

S-seith

S-seith as Edward Kenway from Assassin's Creed

Sticking with video games—but at least veering to a different title—we find ourselves staring in awe at this amazing Assassin’s Creed character. Pierre, a 23 year old from France, portrays Edward Kenway perfectly. The only change he deems necessary is perhaps a little more of a weathered look to the leather. Linda Le

Linda Le as Kratos from God of War

It's Kratos, the God of War… or shall we say Goddess! Sometimes girls want to dress as guys, and vice versa, and there’s nothing stopping them! Often they turn out even more amazing than the original, and VampBeauty, or Linda Le, gives it her all in her portrayal of the God of War as a female.

Nebulaluben

Nebulaluben as Tali'Zorah vas Normandy from Mass Effect

Mass Effect has some pretty intricate designs but that doesn’t stop determined artists from pursuing their craft! Nebulaluben really struts her stuff as Tali'Zorah vas Normandy. Some editing was done in the background, putting an interesting twist and extra emphasis upon the character without actually changing the costume itself, making it look even more spectacular.

Keruuu

Keruuu as Raiden from Metal Gear Rising

This picture was shot in Singapore, where keruuu was able to find an abandoned warehouse to serve as the perfect setting for his Raiden costume (from Metal Gear Rising). Born in North Carolina but currently living in Singapore, Kelton is really putting his Fine Arts degree to good use, creating costumes and props of supreme quality. This costume is perfect from head to toe...and from metal jaw to bolts.

Neko-Tin

Neko-Tin as Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII

Neko-tin is a Russian cosplayer who has been fine-tuning her craft with numerous costumes of varying depth. She proves that not every character has to be overly complex. Some are more simplistic, but each one looks just as cool when done properly and presented with confidence and style! And she definitely looks stylish here as Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII.

Rick Boer

Rick Boer as Snake from Metal Gear

Rick Boer, found online as RBF-productions-NL, offers one of the most accurate versions of Snake from Metal Gear that I’ve ever seen. He’s in his mid-twenties and married with a child. He also teaches during the week and studies biology, yet still has time for his side hobby of costume making. This looks a little higher quality than just "side hobby" work to me! But it proves you don’t have to be a professional or have an art degree to produce highly coveted costumes.

Ivy Cosplay as Freya from Final Fantasy XII

I just can’t get over how breathtaking things look when enhanced by a fitting background, like this picture of Freya from Final Fantasy XII presented by the mind and hands behind Ivycosplay, a young woman named Giulia from Italy. She not only makes cosplay costumes for personal use, but has found a unique way to make a living from it: she offers commissions, meaning she’ll consider requests for costumes and possibly custom make one for you!

Kudrel-Cosplay as a Forest Spirit from Princess Mononoke

Humans don’t always have to dress as humanoid characters. They can mix it up by doing a “gijinka”, or a human personification of a non-human creature. This is commonly seen with Pokémon cosplay, but can be demonstrated in several other areas such as with the deer-like Forest Spirit from Princess Mononoke. This really takes some creativity to accomplish, and Kudrel-Cosplay meets the challenge with flying colors.

She is currently using her growing cosplay fame to promote other projects too, like an Etsy shop online. She lives in Canada but since she began cosplaying in 2004, she has taken to traveling to conventions to compete in contests. She loves to dress up because of the challenge that creating the perfect costume can present and the fun that the end result brings.

Courtney Armstrong

Since I mentioned Pokémon, let’s continue with an original favorite from the first games. Can you tell which one this is? Hint: It’s Zapdos. Courtney Armstrong, a 23 year old North Carolina native, is a member of the D20 girls and goes to several conventions a year, often dressing in three or more costumes per con. She already has ten conventions on her list this year! Plus, she’ll be running panels and helping with events at each one. That’s what the D20 girls do; they attend various events, help out, and try to foster a positive image of female gamers.

Guagua

Guagua as Hibari from Hitman Reborn

And now for something completely different, our last featured cosplayer is none other than a cat named Guagua. We often stumble on whacky trends emerging from the East and this is no exception. Chinese cat owner Toshiya86 celebrated her pet’s birthday by dressing it up in costume. These aren’t typical costumes, though…they involve cardboard, a drawing, and a hole that the cat’s head is inserted into. The end result is the cat’s head on a tiny cartoon body. Adorable, a little odd, and maybe a little mean to some. Pictured is the surprisingly cooperative cat "dressed" as Hibari from Hitman Reborn, complete with a little birdie on his head.

Final Thoughts

So you see, cosplay isn’t only for experts (or humans). You don’t have to have an art degree to participate. Veterans don’t shun newbies, they offer advice. It’s a community that promotes acceptance above all else, where people hug and laugh and pose for pictures, while snacking on Japanese munchies like pocky and Ramune and talking about their favorite TV shows and games. I have attended my local convention four years already, in costume, and I promise it has always been a blast! Any embarrassment that might first be held quickly dissolves away in the lively and fun atmosphere cosplayers create wherever they go.

Monsters University, the prequel to 2001's massively successful Disney/Pixar film Monsters, Inc., will be hitting theaters on Friday! With all of the media attention focused on Sulley, Mike, and Art lately, the HalloweenCostumes.com Monster was turning into a bit of a "green-eyed monster!" The base that the army man is standing on is just regular old cardboard that we (you guessed it...) threw some green paint on!  We have seen some DIYers attach the base right to their boots. For our photo shoot we kept the base unattached, but you can do whichever you prefer.  It definitely ups the costumes "cool factor" but could prove a cumbersome addition if you plan to be bar crawling.

Lewis Carroll's fictional masterpiece "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" has penetrated pop culture in an undeniable fashion and continues to be treasured by children and adults alike. It has inspired movies, plays, and television series, and is responsible for introducing us to such fantastical characters as The Cheshire Cat, The Mad Hatter, The White Rabbit, and The Queen Of Hearts. With so many cool characters introduced in one story, though, it can get confusing!

Summer is winding down and Halloween is still months away. Nevertheless, across the country costume enthusiasts will be gathering for the sacred American tradition of the Renaissance Faire. Ah yes, a magical time where one can watch a jousting tournament, throw an axe at a target and eat a turkey leg all in the same day- much like the Europeans of yesteryear whom the festival tributes. The Ren Faire season is upon us, and while it is not required to dress in costume to attend, we highly encourage it!  Going in traditional (or non-traditional) garb will elevate the faire experience for your group.  This resource will provide you with many such ideas that will spark cherished memories that will last the ages.

While there were some pirates sailing the seas during the Renaissance, they probably did not look like the gang we would expect hanging out in the Port of Tortuga. Mustardseed, Peaseblossom, Cobweb and Moth- Shakespeare's fairies from A Midsummer Night's Dream have certainly captivated the imaginations of multiple generations. Back in the year 2008 we all started to watch the journey of a mild mannered high school teacher who was diagnosed with cancer transform into one of the most terrifying drug kingpins in all the country. The story of Walter White and his road to becoming “the one who knocks” is one filled with sadness, death, and fried chicken. Coming up on August 11 we’ll get to see how his epic story ends, but until that final episode of the series you can get to work on your very own Heisenberg costume!

 

To get Walter’s look just right you’ll need a few things of your own such as a button up shirt and a plain black jacket. Once you have those items you can get started on your Heisenbergian transformation with some of our great accessories:

• First step is to give yourself a bald head by using one of our bald caps - this way you won’t have to actually shave your head if you don’t want to.
• Next up is to give yourself Walter’s goatee. This can easily be done by wearing our beard and moustache kit and trimming it to just the right length for your face.
• Now that you have the perfect Walter White hairstyle you just need the right eyewear. For the normal Walt look we have a pair of clear lens glasses, and for when you want to go full Heisenberg we have a pair of black sunglasses.
• To literally top off the Heisenberg look you just need to add one of our black hats. Once you have all of this together everyone will be saying you’re name.

 

 

Now that you’re a spitting image of Walter White you may want to add two other items to look like someone who is ready to cook:

• First you need one of our latex gas masks so that those fumes from what you’re concocting don’t get to you.
• Once you have your gas mask on you’ll need just one more import safety item, a hazmat suit. With these two things you’ll be able to keep yourself safe, and your lab free of contaminates.

Robb Stark showed a lot of resiliance in the infamous wedding scene that is now permanently burned into our brains. But after the onslaught of arrows, watching his wife and unborn child be killed, and taking a knife to the chest...he didn't stand a chance. To get a look befitting of this [now dead] king we started with our viking warrior costume, subbed out some accessories, and found a clever way to use those silly "arrow-through-the-head" props. DIY Catelyn Stark - Red Wedding Style

This is our favorite of Miley's "We Can't Stop" looks. It's fresh, sexy, and the crisp white really pops. Plus it features a teddy bear backpack, and we just so happen to carry a teddy bear backpack! It has a zippered pouch so it's the perfect way to carry your Halloween night essentials.

The Complete Look

We layered on the gold bangles and cranked the wow factor up to maximum. Just make sure you're willing to pose with your tongue out in every photo taken of you in this costume (and there will be lots of them). Miley wouldn't want it any other way! Below you will find all of the products we used to assemble this sassy style.

The Supplies

• Start with the white body suit from our fifth dimension costume as a base, and simply snip off the collar portion and the leg straps.
• You can add a pair of white spandex shorts for additional coverage.
• Next cut the bottom half off of a plain white cotton t-shirt
• Use a black fabric marker to write "WEST COAST" in all capital letters.
• Top it off with some sexy white heels and the main costume portion is complete! On to the accessories.

Miley's quiff hairstyle is also very distinct, and the short sides and poofed top make it a key element to this DIY look. To recreate the signature style above:

• Start with a wig cap and our 80's style wig. It has lots of blonde dimension in similar colors to those sported by Ms. Cyrus.
• Use bobby pins to pin back sections of bangs at the front, creating a voluminous effect.
• Use black hairspray to shade the sides of the wig. (Tip: wrap a dark-colored towel around your neck during this step. The spray can be messy until it dries.)
• Use scissors to cut off the long hair strands in the back. You could also just tuck them underneath the wig's elastic band.

Your BEST accessory is attitude! We mentioned it before but it bears repeating: Miley has lots of sass in her video and you should be prepared to do the same while you wear this costume. If you're fatigued from dancing around with your tongue out, take a break and try out some zany poses. We suggest making kissy faces at your teddy bag. Photo op!

Awesome Extras

The "We Can't Stop" video has 185 million YouTube views and climbing! This in mind, it's possible that you won't be the only Miley Cyrus at your Halloween bash this year. (UGH!) BUT, if you take some time to create any of these unique DIY props from the video, it's safe to say you'll be the BEST Miley!

French Fry Skull

We're not here to judge the fact that there IS a skull made out of french fries in the video. We're just here to observe and report: it exists. And it's kind of awesome. If you snag our Gold Skull Prop as a base and use a hot glue gun to cover it in french fries (setting aside a few to snack on), your Miley interpretation will surge to the top of the twerk pack!

Severed Pink Goo Hand

There's a memorable moment in the video where a girl in the kitchen chops off fake fingers and pink goop spills on the counter. It's totally twisted, and totally evocative of  the Halloween spirit! (Any scene that calls for fake body parts is okay in our book.) If you can score some pink Gak, all you need is our fake knife prop and the finger portion of our severed hand. **Theatrics not included. That part is up to you!

Money Sandwich

What's for lunch, ma? A money sandwich? My favorite! If the scene featuring said sandwich jumped out at you like it did to us, you're in luck! It's super easy (and surprisingly cheap) to recreate this moment. We just took a stack of our fake bills and fanned them out between two pieces of bread. Woohoo! • Rip up one of our black feathered boas until it looks satisfyingly decayed. Get ready to clean up some stray feathers, though!

 

• Give your face a zombie make over by using some black base paint around your eyes
• Make things extra gory by liberally splattering theatrical blood on yourself
• Add a cigarette holder accessory to become a true flapper zombie - be careful, smoking kills!
• As for your hair, there are no rules here! The messier the better. We just used a comb to tease and volumize until we were satisfied.
