Wheelchair Costumes Header

Halloween may have strange and mysterious origins, but it has evolved into a fun night where people can dress up and express themselves however they see fit. It’s a holiday of celebration and fun, and it shouldn’t be limited to any sex, race, or ability. Those with disabilities that limit movement and require them to use a wheelchair are sometimes forgotten around Halloween season by retailers selling costumes, so many parents have to create their own wheelchair-friendly costumes from scratch. This collaborative process, though, can lead to some tremendously creative finished looks! We've compliled a big list of 20 such looks. Here are 20 of the best and coolest wheelchair-friendly Halloween costumes we have come across on the web. No matter your level of mobility, we are sure you will be inspired by these amazing and creative ensembles!

1. Queen of Thorns

This beautiful octogenarian graced a recent convention decked out as Lady Olenna Tyrell, aka the Queen of Thorns from the Song of Ice and Fire novels and the Game of Thrones HBO show. A powerful and witty great-grandmother and leader of the Tyrell family, the Queen of Thorns is one silver-tongued elderly woman you don’t want to mess with. This wheelchair assisted costume fits the character perfectly and also allows for some fun with the chair as a mock-throne.

2. Disc Jockey

Some of the most clever costumes are the ones that almost entirely hide the wheelchair. This disc jockey costume is a great example of that. A detailed, 80s inspired DJ desk is used as a prop to cover the seat of the wheelchair, leaving arms free to scratch the decks. This kid even knocked his costume further out of the park with the gold chain.

3. Wrestler

wrestler.jpg

[source]

There is no reason why you can’t bring the wrestling ring (and the wrestler) to you. This clever wheelchair costume puts you in the center of the ring as your favorite wrestler. In this case, it’s Rey Mysterio, the legendary lucha libre professional wrestler. Anybody can feel like the center of the action with this body-slammin’ professional wrestler costume. Our exclusive Nacho Libre costume would be a great start towards creating this look for yourself.

4. Shark Attack

Complete with skull figurehead at the front of the ship, some spooky cobwebs to show age, and even some makeshift sails, this is one pirate ship you wouldn’t want to run into on the open waters.

DIY Netflix and Chill Costume

To Millennials, the phrase “Netflix and Chill” has more connotations than people not in the know might realize. When someone slides through your DMs with an offer like that, you should proooobably educate yourself on the ulterior motives first before you innocently invite them over for a marathon of House of Cards. To put it lightly, if you ask someone to “Netflix and Chill,” you’re hoping for something a little more exciting than “chilling” when the lights get low. Feel free to make any potentially-bad decisions you want while swiping through Tinder, but you have to admit dressing up in a couples “Netflix and Chill” costume is a 100% GREAT decision.

DIY Netflix and Chill Halloween Costume

Funny Netflix and Chill Halloween Costume

The number one thing you need for this costume is our custom shirt printer– find an image of the Netflix logo and print that on a red shirt, and then on the white shirt, just the word Chill. Perfect. Print it! Ship it! You’re done! There’s always props you can add, but these two things are definitely the main premise of the look.

Some extra ideas we had are:

  • Carry around a "chill" bag of ice all night. That might melt, though, so be careful!
  • Have someone hold a clapper from a film set. You know, for the times you want to call for, ahem, action.
  • If you have an extra friend laying around, this “one night stand” costume is perfect for a creepy third wheel to wear, to turn this couples look into a topical group costume.

“So, uhhh, do you guys just want me to stay back here, or…..?”

Everyone is getting in on this meme, too. Netflix even made their own “Netflix and Chill” button called “The Switch,” which engineers say will dim the lights, turn your phone to “Do Not Disturb,” and fires up the website. Amazing. And, we do have to say, we were inspired by Tinder user vrpowell2000, who set his profile picture to be a one-man Netflix and Chill costume. We salute you, vrpowell2000!

It was a video that stopped everyone in their tracks. Years from now, we’ll all have a story to answer the question “Where you when you first saw it?” We’re talking about Pizza Rat, of course, the viral video showing a rat from NYC carrying a slice of pizza larger than its body down a flight of stairs. There’s absolutely NOTHING that you can’t identify with while watching this: the rat is hungry, the rat loves pizza, the rat will do anything to get that pizza home for a big, fat bite of that delicious ch-ch-ch-cheese.

Our pizza-de-résistance of this DIY Halloween costume is most definitely the giant slice of ‘za that we cooked up. We cut the separate pieces (cheese, crust, and sparkly pepperoni) from craft foam sheets and hot glued them onto a triangle-shaped Styrofoam board. Done! Dinner is served!

Funny Pizza Rat Halloween Costume

As far as the costume goes, that’s pretty straightforward, right? Dress as a rat and get to munching on a slice of New York’s finest. If you don’t want to dress up, that’s okay, too – you can set up a little Halloween décor scene in your house with your crafted pizza and one of our prop rats. Set up your tablet with the video on loop. It never gets old. Trust us. We watched it a lot while putting this costume together. Funny EVERY TIME.

Maybe you don't want to carry a huge pizza slice with you around all night? (Sounds like a fib, but okay.) We have a solution! Have you HEARD about this Pizza Pouch?! This is a portable pizza necklace that holds a piece of 'za around your neck, oh-so-safely and oh-so-fashionably, and we think it would be a great variation on the Pizza Rat costume. And also, maybe, for every day use. Whatever. You can weigh in on that opinion at home.

Volkswagen Emissions Scandal Costume

It's an outrage! It's a scandal! And of course, it's a Halloween costume. In light of the Volkswagen TDI diesel scandal, there is no separating the news from this year's best "attention getting cringe costume" idea. This is not to trivialize a devastating blow to the car industry, or the countless VW employees it impacts, or the questions it raises about values and ethics. It is, well, comedy. When it hurts too much to cry, it's time to laugh!

In a year with too many scandals, tasteless costumes, and unfortunate news stories to count on all your fingers and toes, this is just par for the course. The real challenge is finding a way to take something so abstract and make it a tangible outfit. Consider our suggestions on how to put together a Volkswagen Diesel Scandal costume, if you want to be the "Oh, I get it" Halloween 2015 partygoer that starts conversations. (*Note: these conversations may be uncomfortable!)

Deluxe Smoke Mask - Shop      Video Game Car Costume - Shop

Adult Black Combat Boots - Shop      Spider Web Decor - Shop      Fake Money - Shop

Toilet paper tube, Box, Gas Can, Black Spray Paint - Sold Separately

Most of this is pretty self-explanatory, but the most challenging part was building the emissions smoke cloud and the exhaust pipe.

Step 1 - Bundle It!

  • Simply bundle up your spider web, and make it nice and fluffy. Your don't want to add a ton of weight here, so the more you can fluff it up, the better. We found a little bit of fishing line helped tie it all together. Spray that puppy down with your black spray paint and clog it into you toilet paper tube.

Step 2 - Bind It!

  • We used duct tape, and a cardboard box cut to fit inside of the video game car costume to give it a sturdy shape. After cutting a small hole in the "exhaust area" and plugging the hole with the "non-smokey end" of the tube, we just duct taped it in in place on both ends.

Step 3 - Sling It!

  • Even with the "smoke" being rather light, it hung a little heavy thanks to our friend gravity. So we wrapped fishing line all around the "smoke plume" and hoisted it up to the box. There we cut a few small holes, and weaved it in an out of the holes to creat some support for the plume. (Think of a suspension bridge.)

The rest, we challenge you to discover for yourself. Hint: It involves tying your combat boots, putting the gas mask on, and holding your gas can. Really tricky stuff! Last note to Volkswagen drivers everywhere: We feel your pain, but hey, what can we do but drive forward.

6 Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know About Doctor Who

The venerable British television series Doctor Who has been discussed to death. At least eleven times! (That’s a regeneration joke, by the way. Sadly not a very good one.) But did you know that we’re lucky to have early video of the Doctor at all? How about all the wacky merchandising tie-ins? Or that there’s a difference between The Doctor and Dr. Who? If you knew all these things, then congratulations, you’re a Doctor Who superfan and we bid good day to you, sir! Or, you know, madam. Let’s just move on. Prepare to be surprised as we tell you about six things you (probably) didn’t know about Doctor Who!

1: Dalekmania

First Doctor William Hartnell with Dalek toys made by Louis Marx and Company.

The television series Doctor Who premiered on the BBC on November 23rd, 1963. The first episode drew 4.4 million viewers, with an average of 6 million across the first series. (A British “series” is equivalent to a season or story arc in the U.S.) This surged to over 10 million viewers in the second series. And what caused it? That’s right, those clunky, exterminating cyborgs, the Daleks. Viewers simply loved the Daleks. Because obviously.

And then merchandise came flooding in. There were Dalek novels, Dalek comic books, Dalek coloring books, Dalek candy, Dalek toys, Dalek puzzles, Dalek kites, Dalek clothing, Dalek costumes. (You get the idea.) Pop bands wrote songs about Daleks. There is a photo of Beatle John Lennon posing with a Dalek, in a strange crossover between Beatlemania and Dalekmania. It was one of the earliest successful media tie-ins, and provided a merchandising model for future television shows and movies.

Dalekmania was cut short by yet another mania. This time it was Batmania, inspired by the campy Adam West Batman that debuted in 1966. Because obviously.

2: Dr. Who

Peter Cushing as Dr. Who.

Peter Cushing as Dr. Who.

[Source]

As Dalekmania began to build, Amicus Productions purchased the rights to make three Doctor Who films from the BBC and writer Terry Nation. The BBC should have said no, but apparently they like rivers of money flowing right into their massive bank vaults. The first film was Dr. Who and the Daleks, a 1965 film based on the 1963 television episode The Daleks. Critical reception was mostly negative, though the film performed well at the box office. Next was Daleks—Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D. in 1966, based on the 1964 episode The Dalek Invasion of Earth. It performed worse than the first film, and the third film, based on the 1965 episode The Chase, was never made. (As mentioned above, Dalekmania had turned to Batmania.)

The Dr. Who of the films was a significant departure from the Doctor of the television series. First off, he was named Dr. Who. As in, his last name was actually “Who," and he was…a doctor inventor? It’s not terribly clear. Dr. Who was played by Peter Cushing, at that time known for playing Sherlock Holmes and a number of iconic horror roles, such as Victor Frankenstein. (Of course, Cushing would later be known for playing Grand Moff Tarkin in the 1977 film Star Wars, the guy who blew up Alderaan.) The character was portrayed as more gentle and juvenile than William Hartnell. Keep in mind that at this time, the Doctor Who tropes of regeneration and multiple Doctors had not yet been written. Cushing essentially played a Doctor who wasn’t the Doctor, and for this reason the Dalek films are not considered part of Doctor Who canon.

3: Limited Regenerations

[Source]

As a Time Lord, the Doctor is able to regenerate a new body (and personality) upon his death. In the 1976 serial The Deadly Assassin, writer Robert Holmes mentioned a limit of twelve regenerations, or thirteen incarnations of the Doctor. Subsequent writers have been kind of consistent about that number. The Eleventh Doctor explained that two additional regenerations had been used—briefly by the War Doctor in between the Eighth and Ninth Doctors, and in a failed regeneration by the Tenth Doctor—so he was, in fact, the last doctor. His companion, Clara, convinced the Time Lords to allow another regeneration, which gets us to the (current) Twelfth Doctor. Unless the writers choose to disrupt their continuity, we’re now watching the final Doctor. This is the end, folks.

But who are we kidding? The whole regeneration trope didn’t exist until William Hartnell left the show and had to be written out. In other words, the idea of a First Doctor didn’t even exist during the First Doctor! We’re talking about a Time Lord here. The writers may not understand basic arithmetic, but they’ll write themselves an exit.

4: Plot Holes

Just a small number of Doctor Who episodes released on DVD.

Just a small number of Doctor Who episodes released on DVD.

[Source]

Speaking of the writers, they have difficult jobs. Just one part is maintaining continuity from one Doctor to another, often picking up where other writers have left off. As we approach a hundred writers and a thousand episodes, let’s face it, mistakes or inconsistencies happen.

In the 1976 serial The Brain of Morbius, a number of faces are briefly shown onscreen. It is implied that they are incarnations of the Doctor prior to the First Doctor. (The faces were played by members of the production crew. There’s probably a joke here, but we’re not entirely sure what it is.) Similarly, the 1986 serial “The Trial of a Time Lord” suggests that the Valeyard would be a composite of later Doctors. So what’s the problem? Well, at that point, they were early enough in the series that adding some doctors at the beginning and end gave the Doctor an air of mystery. Now that we’re at the Twelfth Doctor actually shown onscreen, it creates another plot hole that the writers need to fill. And then there’s the question of the Doctor’s humanity. Both the 1996 film Doctor Who: The Movie and 2005 book Doctor Who: The Legend Continues refer to the Doctor as half human, which has proven to be controversial among Doctor Who fandom.

So how did they fill the plot holes? Later writers have had to insist that the First Doctor was, in fact, the first Doctor, and have mostly remained silent on the “composite of the Doctors” issue. As for being half human, current showrunner Steven Moffat has since stated that the Doctor was lying, although the issue isn’t exactly settled.

5: Spinoffs

Sarah Jane Smith (played by Elisabeth Sladen) and K-9 (played by a space toaster).

[Source]

Doctor Who was practically made to be spinoff-able. (Is that a word?) You’ve got multiple Doctors, even more Companions, enemies galore, different times and dimensions...there’s, like, a lot of stuff going on.

Perhaps the most popular spinoff, Torchwood aired for four series from 2006 through 2011. Starting on BBC Three, the series moved to BBC Two and then BBC One as it gained in popularity, and finally partnered with American Starz for its final season. (That’s like getting upgraded to Princess, and then Queen. And then you’re President of the United States for some reason.) Torchwood was broadcast across much of the world and inspired its own tie-in media: comics, games, even audio dramas. Because obviously.

But the television spinoffs didn’t start with Torchwood. Companions Sarah Jane Smith and robotic dog K-9 have long been fan favorites. A live action pilot featuring the two, K-9 and Company, was aired on BBC1 as a Christmas special in 1981. It attracted over eight million viewers, more than the average Doctor Who episode at the time, but it was doomed by turnover at the BBC. The Children’s BBC had more success with The Sarah Jane Adventures, with four seasons and three specials spanning from 2007 to 2011. A live/computer-animated series, K-9, was produced by British Channel 5, Disney UK, and Australian Network Ten, and aired for a series in 2010.

There were also a number of parody charity spinoffs. Dimensions in Time (1993) included all of the surviving Doctors. Doctor Who and the Curse of the Fatal Death (1999) starred Rowan Atkinson, star of BBC sitcoms Blackadder and Mr. Bean. Yes, Mr. Bean was in a Doctor Who parody. It’s probably on YouTube...

6: Missing Episodes

Many kinds of tape.

Many kinds of tape.

[Source]

97 of the 813 episodes of the series (at current count) are missing. (The office calculator says that’s almost 12%.) But saying they're “missing” is only half the story.

Until 1978, the BBC had no formal process for archiving their recordings of Doctor Who. The videotape from original broadcasts was often transferred to 16mm film, usually to be sent abroad. The tapes and films were typically held by two different departments, and each believed that the other would archive its holdings. Space was at a premium, so tapes and films were pretty much stored wherever there was room. In addition, the BBC had little incentive to retain any recordings at all: actors’ contracts placed limitations on how often their recorded performances could be broadcast on television. As in the early film industry, many actors came from backgrounds in the theatre where they were quite literally paid by the performance. These stipulations removed the possibility that an actor could be paid for only a single performance (when it was recorded) which the BBC could then broadcast indefinitely. This all created a situation where the BBC saw little economic sense in archiving anything, had no room for the episodes it already had, and its informal processes guaranteed that tapes and film would be wiped or destroyed accidentally, if not on purpose.

So we’re talking about 97 of 813, right? Not exactly. 253 master videotapes were wiped or destroyed. (That’s 31%, again thanks to the office calculator.) This was the entirety of the first six series, both the First and Second Doctors. Many of those videotapes were transferred to film, of course. A few were returned from abroad, primarily from Nigeria. Others were found in random places, stuffed in a cupboard at the BBC—yes, that happened—or taken home by various employees.

Evolution of the Flash

Season three of the C.W.’s hit show Arrow introduced many to Barry Allen, a forensic scientist from a little town called Central City. Barry Allen is known to many as the Flash, the Fastest Man Alive, a founding member of the Justice League, and the first official superhero of a time known as the Silver Age of Comics. The title of the Flash has been held by more than just Barry; Jay Garrick, Wally West, and Bart Allen have all held the title of Scarlet Speedster throughout DC’s long history.

The Flash’s iconic red jumpsuit has not changed all that much in his history, even when other characters like Wally West or Bart Allen took up the mantle. The Flash’s look has stayed true to that original look developed by Carmine Infantino. Since his creation, the Flash has been featured in television, cartoons, video games, and comics—each medium giving him their own unique flair. Explore how the Scarlet Speedster has changed in his 75 year history with this infographic!

90s Nickelodeon Game Show Costumes

We have been obsessed wtih all things 90s since, well, THE 90s, and it turns out we're not alone in our overwhelming feelings of nostalgia for this delightful decade. Nickelodeon will be lauching "The Splat" tonight, a nightly programming block airing from 10PM to 5AM, which will feature the best, best, BEST Nick shows of our collective youths. Is this real life?? Do we really to get to re-watch Legends of the Hidden Temple contestants get captured by terrifying Temple Guards? Do we really get to cheer for the red contestant on GUTS, as they vie for a piece of the Aggro Crag? YES! The answer is yes.

In honor of this most fantastic new television offering, and because 90s nostalgia costumes are going to be especially big on Halloween this year, we put together 5 different DIY looks from our favorite Nickelodeon game shows. It's about to get WILD AND CRAZY, KIDS!

1. DIY GUTS Contestant Costume

D-d-d-d-d-do you have it, GUTS! (Are we the only ones that answered the TV? "YES! WE DO! WE HAVE WHAT IT TAKES!") GUTS was one of the best Nickelodeon game shows around - it had great hosts (Mike O'Malley and Moira "Mo" Quirk), awesome physical competitions, lots of bungee harnesses action, and something worth fighting for: a piece of the Aggro Crag! We had a blast putting together this costume, and made sure not to skimp on the shoulder pads.

The Finished Look

Who would have thought that a Silk Spectre costume from Watchmen, would be the perfect base for a Nickelodeon game show costume? As odd as it sounds, it made for the perfect spandex-ee jumpsuit to get us started. On top of that, we layered on a tee made with our custom t-shirt creator, and accented that with a full body harness and a pair of fingerless gloves. We spray painted a green army helmet yellow, added an oversized award medal, and all that was left to do was create some easy shoulder/knee pads. To create a set of these pads for yourself, simply:

  • remove the plastic shoulder pads from our children's football pad set.
  • Adhere the pads, using hot glue, to pieces of black elastic.
  • Slide them on and trim the elastic to fit!
  • We used the elastic holsters from our Tomb Raider costume, but elastic is widely available at craft stores.

DIY Aggro Crag

Let's be honest. You don't want to be just any GUTS contestant this Halloween, you want to be a winning GUTS contestant! As such, you'll need proof of your prowess in the form of a chunk of the old Aggro Crag. You could go all out and rig something up using glowing green lights, but there's really no need, when something fashioned from poster board, cardboard, and spray glue will do the trick just fine.

2. DIY GUTS "Mo" Costume

Guts mo gif

How will you ever know "your official results" without a Mo costume to compliment your GUTS contestant ensemble? All you really need to convey the essence of Mo is a referee outfit, a whistle, a very official looking stop watch, and, of course, YOUR BEST BRITISH ACCENT! We can help you out with most of those things, but you're on your own for the accent. Maybe you can catch a GUTS re-run on The Splat?

OH yes - don't forget the headset! That's how Mo and Mike O'Malley communicated between athletic challenges. Our "diva headset" is a must.

3. DIY Legends of the Hidden Temple Contestant Costume

Did you and your siblings each pick a team to root for, and then take it as a deeply personal offense if they turned out to be duds? DANG YOU, BLUE BARRACUDAS! Whichever team you hitched your wagon to most often, wouldn't it be fun to dress up as a member of that team for Halloween? Yes it would, is the answer. We went with a relative underdog, a Purple Parrot. (Pay close attention - Olmec will be quizzing you on this DIY later.)

The Finished Look

Legends of the Hidden Temple Contestant Costume

The only thing this costume is missing is a ridiculously oversized mouth guard - may we suggest using a big slice of orange peel on Halloween? Again, we used our handy custom t-shirt creator to print off the Purple Parrot graphic, and completed the costume with our DIY knee and elbow pads. The khaki shorts are actually part of a Reno 911 police costume! This time we painted our green tactical army helmet a shiny gold, and gave the model some key accessories, including a full pendant of life, and a name tag.

4. DIY Temple Guard Costume

The Temple Guards from Legends of the Hidden Temple may as well be characters in a horror film. They have the same characteristics, afterall: scary masks, crazy costumes, and the element of surprise! You never know which dark corner of the temple obstacle course run they'll be lurking in. We managed to find a few images that gave us a good idea of how to create a Halloween costume modeled after the elusive Temple Guard. Study the DIY closely, but don't stare too long or he might just decide to snatch your pendant of life!

The Finished Look

Legends of the Hidden Temple Temple Guard Costume

Pretty cool, hey? A surprisingly large amount of the items included with our men's gladiator costume served as the bulk of this look. To it, we added a shortened grass skirt, simple leather sandals, and the most important element, the mask and feathered headpiece. Our gold and silver Venetian masquerade mask worked perfectly after removing some of the extra bangles and dangles, and for the headpiece, we used hot glue to add bright feathers from an Indian headdress onto the feathers that already come attached to our gold fabric gladiator helmet.

5. DIY Double Dare Contestant Costume

Double Dare Slippery Floor Gif

The Double Dare stage sure was a messy one, this nobody can deny. The copious amounts of slime, whipped cream, glitter, and more slime, is probably why contestants constantly wore protective helmets, goggles, and padding. Robin couldn't be there for every single slip and fall, after all - she's only one woman! Here's a simple way to put together the perfect DIY Double Dare contestant costume. Just remember: ALWAYS take the physical challenge! What else are ya there for?? YOLO.

The Finished Look

DIY Double Dare Halloween Costume

Besides the look on our model's face, our favorite part of this costume has to be the slime bowl on the helmet. To make it, all we did was hot glue a clear plastic bowl onto the helmet (which was pre-painted yellow, of course), mark off "slime lines" with black electrical tape, and smear a whole bunch of green body paint all over the inside of the bowl! The pads were created using the same method detailed above, and you guessed it, the shirt was printed with our custom t-shirt creator. We're pretty sure Marc Summers would whole-heartedly approve of this costume.

So. Our post: d-d-d-d-d-did you like it? (GUTS!) What was your favorite 90s Nickelodeon show? Is there any series you'd tune into The Splat at 4AM for? Do you think they'll honor the members of the midnight society by playing Are you Afraid of the Dark at the stroke of 12AM? Jason Voorhees Infographic Header

You can't mention Friday the 13th without thinking of Jason Voorhees, the legendary killer whose origins began at Camp Crystal Lake 35 years ago. The first film in the franchise opened on May 9th, 1980 and told the story of a group of camp counselors who were being stalked and killed during the re-opening of Camp Crystal Lake. Of course, the killer turned out to be Pamela Voohees (sorry, statute of limitations on spoilers expired for this film), who was seeking revenge after her son, Jason, drowned at camp years earlier. Once Pamela was killed, Jason emerged from the lake to pick up right where she left off at Camp Crystal Lake. Through the years, Jason Voohees has been to many other places like Manhattan, outer space, and even hell. While his heart will always be at Camp, let's take a look through all 12 Friday the 13th films to learn more about the machete-weilding killer.

The Evolution of Jason Voorhees

Friday the 13th is a fascinating franchise for many reasons. For starters, the first film was made to capitalize on the success of fellow slasher film Halloween, and it did just that by raking in more than $39 million on a budget of $550,000. On top of that, the franchise has been one of the most censored in film history. In fact, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood required nine edits and resubmissions to the MPAA to avoid an X rating. And despite Jason being the focal point of the movies, there are two in the franchise where he isn't even the killer! As mentioned before, Pamela Voorhees was the killer in the first one and copycat killer, Roy, took on the Jason moniker in Friday the 13th Part V - A New Beginning

What's your favorite Friday the 13th movie? Where does Friday the 13th rank on your list of horror film franchises? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think. If you're looking for something scary to wear for Halloween, why not dress up in a Jason Voorhees costume or try looking through the other scary Halloween costumes available on our site.

For a non-mediocre costume, just remember: the more the merrier. Well, more belts and gear, that is. Not more shirts or hair. For this look, we added a few bandolier type belts, steampunk-esque pouches, and then loaded it up with tools and chains. The pants are just basic black and the boots are oversized combat boots.

Other items that we accessorized with were a pair of aviator goggles (for driving through the dust storm), a broken shackle (from when he gets separated from his blood bag, Max), and a white scarf, which is part of the wives' robes that he takes back to Immortan Joe. Last, but not least, don't forget this Tin Man's oil can, perfect for holding the shiny silver spray, which really got Nux geared up for a chase. Hook it to one of your belts - there has to be a free loop to hang it from somewhere!

Mad Max: Fury Road Steering Wheel Prop

Mad Max Steering Wheel DIY

What's a black thumb without a one-of-a-kind steering wheel? Each War Boy pays homage to V8 as they take their wheel out on the Fury Road. We created this with parts we found laying out in our warehouse and an old ATV steering wheel. There's some corrugated cardboard painted black, taped on with some electrical tape. We also found some tubing, chain, and wires, and just affixed them as we went. The main piece of the wheel, though, is a creepy, cracked, dollhead candle holder, glued to the center. The baby heads came with fake tealight candles, which we cut apart and glued to the mouth to add to the dirty, mechanical look.

While we won't really advocate for letting your little kid watch this movie, we can't deny that there ARE children in the film! The War Pups are the little boys who stay back at the Citadel while the older War Boys go off to drive and fight. Here's how we put together this look for a younger boy.

A lot of the gear used for the War Pup costume is the same as Nux - black pants, lots of belts, and combat boots. In this look, we had our model wear a sleeveless white shirt to make it school and trick-or-treating appropriate. The characters in the film are shirtless, but what's a good Halloween costume without some personalization, right?

Mad Max Silver Mouth Spray

WITNESS ME!

The silver spray is the finishing touch! We found a bottle of food coloring spray from a party supply store. We do not recommend spraying it in your mouth, however, it does NOT taste good. Those War Boys are crazy. The above picture shows a great close-up of Larry and Barry, too, who are Nux's pet... tumors?

What do you think? Did we do George Miller's newest film justice? If you saw this guy driving a car towards you, would you turn around? Or would you fight back, trying to find some hope and redemption in the wasteland? Either way, if you dress as ANYONE from the Mad Max universe, show us in the comments below! We'll witness you.

Rogues Gallery: A Timeline of Batman Comic Villains

Batman has a lot of enemies. These villains are often called the Rogues Gallery, a reference to the mugshots and other documents–about their hideouts, known associates, and so on–that early police departments used to identify and catch criminal suspects. Batman’s Rogues Gallery ranged from common criminals to supervillains and criminal masterminds like the Joker. In this infographic, we catalogued the first comic book appearance of every Rogues Gallery villain, and also highlighted some of the more iconic supervillains.

Halloween with a toddler around can make for an interesting trick-or-treating experience. Your toddler is at that age where their personality (and perhaps a bit of attitude) is shining through. Polka Dots & Bows: The Style Evolution of Minnie Mouse [INFOGRAPHIC]

Minnie-Mouse-Header.jpg

Minnie Mouse, lesser known as Minerva Mouse, has been on the Disney scene since 1928. Walt Disney and Ub lwerks needed a replacement for Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and their new star Mickey Mouse wasn’t enough to fill that void all by himself, so it was determined he needed a love interest. It is never clear whether Mickey and Minnie are dating, married, or if he is just trying to win her affection, but their relationship changed throughout the decades. Her role opposite Mickey has also wavered from an independent woman, to a damsel in distress, and back to a stronger female character in later years as she became increasingly popular.

Early on, Minnie was designed like a typical 1920s fashionista. She had her flapper dress, patched knickers, black stockings, and her over-sized heels. We can’t forget her iconic bowler hat with the flower! Minnie doesn’t quite look like that today, and she has had an assortment of physical changes to accompany the changing styles. In fact, since Minnie has been drawn in comics, appears in animated shorts, television shows, and so much more, she has been estimated to have over a hundred outfits! That’s every girl’s dream! You can see the most major changes below, in our style evolution infographic of Miss Minnie Mouse!

Hungry Hungry Hippos DIY Costumes

Remember Hungry Hungry Hippos? Four differently-colored plastic hippos eat marbles via levers on their, well, derrières. It’s a strange concept that we’re not sure would work today – unless the marbles were low-cal and gluten-free – but in 1967 people didn’t care about that! So if you’re feeling nostalgic and looking for a fun group costume idea for Halloween, look no further than Hungry Hungry Hippos!

Hungry Hungry Hippos Game

The original game board will give you an idea of what you’ll need: four hippos, colored blue, green, orange, and yellow. We’ve got the masks and costumes detailed below. Then there are the marbles, which are red in some versions but white in others. We used ping pong balls, and we wouldn’t recommend eating them. (Learn from our mistakes, people!)

Here's our finished project, with painted hippo masks, colored Morphsuits, and a Photoshopped background. (Contrary to popular opinion, we don't actually live in a cartoon jungle.)

DIY Hungry Hungry Hippos Costume Tutorial

Tutorial for Hungry Hungry Hippos DIY

The costume is deceptively straightforward: painted hippo masks, colored Morphsuits (in blue, green, orange, and yellow), and tutus where applicable. We say “deceptively” because latex is notoriously difficult to paint. There are expensive rubber-cement-based paints you can find online, but after a lot of research, we were able to make it work with spray paint!

Painting Tips:

  • Use multiple light coats of a high-end “paint and primer” spray paint.
  • Stay away from cheap gloss acrylics (without primer), because they’ll stay wet and peel off.
  • If you lay they paint on too thick, the it will crack and chip.
  • Apply light coats with a few minutes to set in between, and allow a full day to dry.

Burger King Halloween Whopper and Sexy Green Poop Halloween Costume

Hmmm, how to broach this subject delicately...wait, the subject is sexy poop, so that's not humanly possible? Okay! In that case, better include all the poop puns we can!! Now that we understand each other, away we go: Burger King's limited edition "Halloween Whopper" has been making headlines lately, and not because of its spooky black bun. Let's say this #1 headline has more to do with...#2. That's right, those brave enough to try this festive food have reported that after consuming the burger, their poop turns GREEN! Burger King has assured consumers that the bread contains less than 1% food dye and is completely safe, but that didn't stop the hashtag #GreenPoop from blowing up on Twitter, and it sureeeee didn't stop us from parodying this whopper of a story with a Halloween costume idea! Without further a-poo, we bring you a DIY tutorial on how to create a sexy green poop Halloween costume.

Sexy HA1loween Whopper Green Poop Costume

Sexy Green Poop costume

Face it...a "regular" green poop costume would have just been too expected.

Burger King Green Poop Halloween Costume

Pee-ew-tiful!

Sexy Breaking Bad costume? Been there, done that. Sexy Ronald McDonald? Eaaasyyyy. Sexy poop? Finally, a bit of a challenge. To attempt this rather "corny" Halloween costume for yourself, you'll need to get a little creative. (A poop tunic doesn't exactly scream sexy.) But by adding accessories, like a belt to cinch the waist, a pair of high heels, and some fishnet stockings, you'll be well on your way to making fellow Halloween party-goers' cheeks "flush!"

To make a sexy poop costume (lol, is this real life?), you'll first need to procure a standard poop costume to use as the base. Our tough s#!t costume is the crappiest candidate we carry! We cut off the sleeves with a pair of sharp scissors, then proceeded to spray paint the entire thing an appropriate emerald hue. After waiting for it to dry thoroughly, we styled our model with "loads" of green accessories. If you're not quite brave enough to show up to a party dressed like this solo, and you want to give your green poop ensemble some added context, why not grab your main "squeeze" and dress him up as a Hallowhopper? Using a Sharpie to color the bun black is a bit tedious, but the ends justify the beans, if you will.

If you and your significant other choose this idea for your Halloween 2015 couples costume, rest assured you will be the "butt" of everyone's costume jokes...but in a good way! It's what you were going for, right? Just be prepared to hear, "nice buns" quite a few times throughout the evening. If, on the other hand, people tell you you look like crap? Well we're not sure how to take that. There's no manual for stuff like this.

If you manage to assemble a group costume of a Burger King, green poop, and a black bun Whopper, and people STILL don't get it, well then they clearly don't have any social media accounts or ever go online and then we honestly don't trust them. Might we suggest politely excusing yourself from the conversation?

In that case, HAPPY BOWEL-WEEN!

DIY Splatoon Inklings Costumes

header.jpg

The squid kids are on the offensive! Believe it or not, the hottest video game of 2015 doesn’t involve grand theft, realistic war scenarios, or zombies. Instead, it features a group of colorfully attired half human, half squid children known as Inklings. Long story short, some 12,000 years after the effects of global warming covered the Earth in water, squid and octopi have evolved into human-like forms and began fighting over territory using modified weapons that shoot colored ink. Being a Nintendo game, characters don’t die, they just get “splatted.” Also, there is no red ink, because that would look too similar to blood.

Splatoon is a fun, addictive, multiplayer game that both children and adults have embraced. With the bright colors, cool costumes, and fun game modes, Splatoon is a huge hit for Nintendo and looks to be a franchise that will be around for a long time to come. Creating a custom Inkling costume is relatively easy. We’ve put together both an Inlkling boy and Inkling girl costume using a few simple costume items and accessories. Take a look at how you can easily and affordably dress up as a sassy Inkling this Halloween or convention season!

DIY Splatoon Inkling Costumes

Both.jpg

Splatoon inklings are popping up more and more at conventions and events around the globe. What better costume to show your love for all things Nintendo, and all things squid kid, than with a cool DIY costume that you made with your own two hands? We created both a boy and a girl Inkling costume using stuff we found around the warehouse and even some clothing items we already owned. Check it out!

DIY Inkling Boy Costume

When it comes to Inkling gender, there is not much difference in attire. Both Inklings wear flashy, neon sports attire and can wield the same ink-spraying weapons. The boy Inkling often features a top-knot hairstyle as opposed to the long, tentacled "hair" of the female. Here's our take on the Splatoon Inkling boy below.

The Finished Look

Boy1.jpg

For the male Inkling we started by doing some very minor trimming to the blue wig, finishing it off with a simple, textured hairband from our "Instant Hippie Kit" to tie around the top. We painted a small amount of black makeup around our model's eyes to fill in the space that our black eye mask did not cover.

For clothing, we started by printing out the Splatoon text and logo of a jumping squid using our custom t-shirt creator. Simple black leggings or shorts work for the bottoms. Any sort of sports apparel will work as well, such as gym shorts, track pants, etc. Same goes for shoes - the Inklings wear a wide variety of footwear, from clogs to boots to tennis shoes, so almost anything goes. BUT: the sportier and more colorful, the better! Our model went with some classic black running shoes which are an item in the game. To finish off the look we added some prosthetic pointed ears and goggles to the head.

A Closer Look

Boy3.jpg

We modified a Boba Fett blaster fun with an empty soda bottle and stuffed some blue crafting foam inside to simulate the ink. We then made a makeshift pipe leading from the ink container to the blaster using the same crafting foam. Tape it up with some neon green duct tape for color accents and to hold it all together, and you should be good to go. Our custom inkling boy is now ready to ink the map and splat the enemy!

DIY Inkling Girl Costume

The Inkling girl is, arguably, the spunkier of the two. But the best part of the girl Inkling is the long, neon tentacle "hair" that flows down past her shoulders. We outfitted our female Inkling with a splat roller and some oversized headphones, among other things. Check out our take on the Splatoon Inkling girl below!

The Finished Look

Girl1.jpg

For the female inkling we again did some minor trimming to the neon orange wig to get the proper shape. Like the male Inkling, we used a small amount of black makeup around the eyes to fill in the spaces that our black mask did not cover.

The Inkling girl's clothing feature black leggings and a custom printed shirt featuring text written in the unique Inkling language. Here again, any sporty apparel works great for this DIY costume. Bright, neon colors always work as long as they come close to matching the hair color you have chosen. Our model is rocking some great blue and red running shoes that were her own from home. Look through your closet and ask your friends - most people have at least one or two pairs or brightly colored sneakers at home! For the girl Inkling we also added a white wristband for that extra touch of sportiness. To top off the look we borrowed a pair of big, expensive, over-the-ear headphones. Inklings love to jam out to their favorite chiptunes while covering the turf with ink.

A Closer Look

Girl2.jpg

Instead of the ink blaster, we went with an ink roller for the Inkling girl. In the game, the ink roller is much, much bigger, but the smaller version is more portable for Halloween and gets the idea across. We used neon orange crafting foam (the same color as the wig) and wrapped it around the roller to simulate a wet, ink roller. We finished off the roller DIY with a small amount of bright orange duct tape to add a little extra pop of color.

Hope DIY Makeup Tutorial

Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign was changed forever with the viral spread of a single poster: “Hope” by Shepard Fairey. The iconic image is instantly recognizable to a generation of voters, and has even been remade and repurposed for a variety of political campaigns and social causes. These traits make “Hope” an inspired DIY Halloween costume idea, but also one you rarely see. Let’s take a look at “Hope,” its background, and how we pulled it off!

“Hope” by Shepard Fairey

[Source]

Shepard Fairey first gained notoriety through his “Andre the Giant Has a Posse” sticker campaign, which spread worldwide from its origins in Rhode Island. After he was threatened with a lawsuit for using André the Giant’s trademarked image, Fairey created a more stylized image combined with the “Obey” slogan from the film They Live. He was able to turn the new “Obey Giant” campaign into a successful clothing line, which helped fund other artistic endeavors as well as Swindle Magazine.

Everything changed with “Hope” in 2008. The original poster was unofficial, but Fairey soon found himself working directly with the Obama campaign. With hundreds of thousands of posters made (most of which were given away), the image has since become iconic.

Detailed "Hope" Makeup Tutorial

We suggest using the light blue and black from the Animal Instincts makeup kit, plus the Red Body Paint. We went with body paint because there’s a lot of skin to cover, plus we found it makes cleanup much easier. If you’re an expert at mixing colors uniformly and applying an even coat, you might be able to use the Clown Costume Kit by itself, but we think that might be stretching the red too thin.

  • Start with the red side of the face, if only to get used to the body paint consistency.
  • Once you’re finished with half the face, use the red to outline the opposite eyebrow, the “v” underneath the eye, and finally the neck.
  • Outline everything in blue, paying special attention to the lined sections around the eye and chin.
  • Use black to finish the eyebrows, neck, and accents -  black covers both blue and red paint very well, incase you made any boo-boos.
  • Keep in mind throughout the process: the thicker the paint, the more likely it will crack and peel, so try to keep it as light and thin as possible for maximum wear.
