Star-Wars-Rogue-Squadron-Main

When Disney acquired Lucasfilm, and in effect, the entirety of the Star Wars universe, it quickly went about consolidating the enormous number of canon and non-canon stories. What was known as the Extended Universe (EU), featuring books, comics, and other media based on the Star Wars universe, was re-categorized as “Legends." The official Star Wars canon was narrowed down to the six official films, the Clone Wars and Rebels cartoons, and some new illustrated and written media. Of all the EU media delegated to Legends status, none was more loved and admired by the fandom than the stories surrounding the famous starfighter squadron led by Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles.

Labeled the Rogue Squadron, these elite Rebel Alliance pilots went on to take part in numerous heroic missions across comic books, novels, and video games. The most well-known of these Rogue Squadron stories is the trilogy of games released for the Nintendo 64 and GameCube consoles. Finally, entire games were devoted to this rag-tag group of Empire crushing pilots. With state-of-the-art graphics (for the time), full 360 degree flight, and numerous Alliance and Empire crafts to control, the Rogue Squadron series was an instant best-seller.

2016 will see the release of Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One, a story set before Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope. It will tell the story of the pilots that stole the plans to the first Death Star. The Force Awakens has already introduced the brash and headstrong character of Poe Dameron in the first teaser trailer, who is seen whooping and hollering as his X-wing flies low over the water of a planet's surface. Beyond the films, the latest Star Wars themed video game, entitled Star Wars Battlefront, will allow players to battle against their friends in the skies and on the ground in familiar locations such as Hoth, Tatooine, and Endor. With Rebel pilots and Rogue leaders such an important part of the Star Wars experience going forward, check out this brief history of one of their finest gaming moments. Take flight with us as we careen through the history of Rogue Squadron and the various ground and space crafts that are playable across the series.

Which ship from the Rogue Squadron games was your favorite to fly? The lightning fast A-wing or the lumbering, but powerful Y-wing? Personally, we will never get over the feeling of virtually flying the Millennium Falcon, with deflector shields at full, taking down pesky TIEs in our path. If you want to truly feel like one of the Squad, suit up in one of our adult X-wing pilot costumes. For even more authenticity, strap on famed (and underrated) Rogue Squadron pilot Wedge Antilles’ personal X-wing helmet. May The Force be with you.

DIY Powerpuff Girls Fuzzy Lumpkins and HIM Couples Costume

Powerpuff Villains Header.jpg

Chances are if you grew up in the 90s, you at least knew who the Powerpuff Girls are. The popular animated kids show starred Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, 3 little girls with superpowers who fought crime in the city of Townsville (yes, that’s the real name of the fictional city the writers chose). The show debuted in the late 90s and was part of the movement that brought anime-style animation to shows in the US. While the girls were clearly the focus of the show, it was the villains who were downright weird. If you want a fun Powerpuff Girls-themed couples costume for Halloween, try out this DIY on how to dress as 2 of the most colorful villains from the show: Fuzzy Lumpkins and HIM.

Fuzzy Lumpkins was the first villain to be introduced on the show. He’s your run-of-the-mill pink monster hillbilly who shoots trespassers and is prone to fits of rage in which he turns red and gains superhuman strength.

The Finished Look

Fuzzy.jpg

To dress as Fuzzy Lumpkins, you’ll want to start with a pink gorilla suit and blue overalls. We used the overalls from our farmer costume. Add on some buck teeth, antennae, and a smurf nose painted green to complete the look. You can wear any brown shoes and accessorize with a pink shotgun and bottle for “moonshine,” although we’re just making assumptions as it WAS supposed to be a show for children.

DIY HIM Costume

HIM is a mysterious demon monster who feeds off of negative emotions and resembles the Devil. While nobody is really sure on the sex of this villain (your guess is as good as anybody's), it’s referred to as “HIM” because speaking it’s name strikes fear into men. Most of HIM’s plans involve psychological warfare in either trying to drive the Powerpuff Girls crazy or turn them against each other.

The Finished Look

For this costume, you’ll need a red jumpsuit and knee-high boots. For the claws, we used the ones from our Rock Lobster costume, but maybe you’ll want to opt for red gloves if you want to be able to use your hands. You’ll need two pink tutus, one to wear around your waist and another to use for the headpiece. For your head, wear a black wig and a pink headband with the other tutu glued to it.

DIY Evil Dead Ash Halloween Costume

On a scale of one to groovy, how excited are you for the premiere of Ash vs. Evil Dead on Starz this Halloween? In our eyes, Bruce Campbell is one of the reigning kings of horror, and his half-slapstick/half-serious portrayal of Ash in the Evil Dead movies is a staple of October viewing. We just know that the new TV series starring Bruce himself will be a perfect addition to the franchise canon. Armed with a boomstick, a chainsaw, and a gallon of fake blood, we set out to create a sexy, girl costume version of Ash, our hero.

How to Make a Sexy Ash Costume

Female Ash Evil Dead Costume

There are a few things that are completely necessary when recreating Ash’s look – a blue, button-up shirt, some brown, leather chest straps, and a red, chainsaw in place of a hand. And blood. So, so, so much blood.

Gallon of Blood – Shop       Black Combat Boots – Shop

There were a few “most fun” parts of this DIY. For example, chopping up a blue shirt found at the thrift store was pretty cool. To create the chest straps, we took two of the faux-leather body harnesses, took off the fake fur, and attached them together to create an x-shaped body belt. That was fun, too. But… seriously, who are we kidding? The MOST “most fun” part was making the chainsaw! We cut an arm-shaped circle in the back and spray-painted the whole body red. It sounds very glamourous, but we had the model wear a sock on her hand to protect her from any unsmooth parts of the arm hole and then added a generous helping of duct tape around her wrist.

DIY Bride of Frankenstein

The Bride of Frankenstein has been an iconic Halloween look for decades, although it’s one that relatively few people attempt themselves. Much of that comes from its perceived difficulty, from the dress to the makeup to that elaborate hairstyle. But this DIY experiment doesn’t require an M.D. in Mad Science, and we’ve got everything you need to bring the Bride of Frankenstein costume to life!

Elsa Lanchester

Elsa Lanchester in Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

[Source]

The iconic Bride of Frankenstein originated in, you guessed it, the 1935 film Bride of Frankenstein. This was the sequel to 1931’s Frankenstein, starring Boris Karloff as The Monster. Not Frankenstein, who was actually the scientist who created The Monster. (With us so far?) Elsa Lanchester played the woman created to be The Monster’s “mate,” which means the movie should more accurately be named Bride of The Monster. And then there’s the scientist Frankenstein’s wife, Elizabeth, the literal“bride of Frankenstein” who is just, you know, Elizabeth.

Confused yet? It’s okay, all you have to remember is that the titular “Bride of Frankenstein” referred to in the films (and costume) is really just The Monster’s bride and partner-in-crime. Forget about Elizabeth. Shhh. It’ll be fine.

This bride was easy to assemble! For clothes, we used our exclusive Bride of Frankenstein Costume, Women's Transylvania Wig, and Sexy White Heels. As far as makeup, we went with black and white Vampire Makeup and some Tooth Decay. It’s literally all you need. Unless it’s cold out, then take a jacket.

Bride of Frankenstein Costume & Makeup Tutorial

Bride of Frankenstein

Clothing:

The clothing on our Bride of Frankenstein is straight forward. We didn’t make any adjustments to the Bride of Frankenstein costume, but we did spend some time fluffing up the Women's Transylvania Wig. You can buy fancy hairspray that’s made for wigs, but–hint hint!–regular hairspray works just fine. We thought the Sexy White Heels matched everything else best.

Makeup:

The makeup will be more time-consuming. Start with a white base, and make sure to apply a light coat on the neck and shoulders, if only to reduce the contrast between face and neck. (Unless your skin is naturally this white, in which case you are probably dead. You might want to get that looked at.) Next up is the black makeup. Apply it around the eyes, smudging it outwards. Use the black makeup stick for the lips, and try for a fine, crisp line and maximum contrast. Finish with Tooth Decay on the teeth, and smile for the camera!

Classic horror monsters turned cereal mascots, General Mills introduced Count Chocula and Franken Berry back in 1971, followed by Boo-Berry, Fruit Brute, and Fruity Yummy Mummy. No new monster flavor has been introduced since 1987, but what would it look like if they'd continued to expand the line into more recent film horrors? We wondered the same thing, and these 6 brand new cereals emerged...

On the Campaign Trail: DIY Political Costume Ideas for 2015

2015 political costume ideas

The next presidential election is still over a year way, but with all of the pop culture coverage the candidates are receiving, doesn't it feel like you'll be casting your ballot tomorrow? Perhaps the added attention is due to the fact that this is a particularly colorful group of candidates. Among the contendors, we have: take-no-nonsense Hillary Clinton, campaigning to become the first Mrs. President, a multi-billionaire whose comb over is arguably as famous as his "it's gonna be huge" catchphrase, the longest serving independent in US history, a mysterious figure gaining steam in Iowa known as "Deez Nuts," and even award winning recording artist, producer, fashion designer, and speech-interupter Kanye West. (He has thrown his hat in the ring for 2020...)

With all of this white house hubbub, you can bet 2015 will be a very popular year for political costumes. Since we are always campaigning for you to be the best dressed costume party attendee, here are five helpful political candidate DIY costume tutorials to get you started. Four more beers! Four more beers!

1. DIY Texts From Hillary Clinton Costume

Texts from hillary meme

In the "Texts from Hillary" meme, it seems Mrs. Clinton is taking a page from the Beyoncé playbook: "Who run the world? Girls." if you're a take charge chica who won't settle for puny positions like First Lady or Secretary of State, and will only rest when you're at the top, then a Hillary Clinton costume may be the perfect fit for you this Halloween!

The Finished Look

Hillary.jpg

We did our best to recreate the meme by giving Hillary a smart phone, and punching small holes into our latex mask so we could slide on a pair of shade-throwing sunglasses. Another easy and appropo prop to carry with you on Halloween night would be a sheet of emails from your "private" server! We completed the look with a solid color skirt suit and opaque pantyhose.

2. DIY Bernie Sanders Feel the Bern Costume

Feel the bern poster

The juxtoposition of Bernie Sanders' white-haired, "institution politician" appearance, to his fiery messaging and hip, "feel the bern" campaign slogan, has been bringing Mr. Sanders a lot of attention over the past several months. It's safe to say that as Bernie's campaign picks up steam, one person that is definitely "feeling the bern" is Hillary Clinton! We thought this growing friction could create Halloween sparks as the perfect couples costume.

The Finished Look

Hilary-Bernie.jpg

Nothing drives a point home like being literal, so if you want to make sure your friends and fellow partygoers know you're trying to recreate "feel the bern," carry around some fire! We outfitted our Bernie with a custom jumbo mask and a fabric flame accessory, and gave our Hillary a fire extinguisher purse to combat the heat.

3. DIY Deez Nuts Halloween Costume

deez nuts

How do you know when the American voting public is fed up with the current political system? It's a pretty good indicator that's the case, when a mysterious write-in candidate named "Deez Nuts" receives 9% of the public vote in Iowa, as was the case earlier this year. In fact, Deez Nuts is already on the ballot in 30 US states. If you want to dress as a political symbol of "something really needs to change," the mysterious Iowan "Deez Nuts," here's how!

The Finished Look

DeezNuts.jpg

Assembling this costume is super simple, provided you're good with an exacto knife! We purchased an inexpensive white picture frame from the craft store, along with a sheet of white craft board. We cut out each of necessary numbers and letters from the craft board, and hot glued them to the frame and/or to each other. Lastly, we found a free image for a "Deez Nuts" button, printed it, and adhered it to the morph suit with double-sided tape.

4. DIY Donald Trump Corn Silk Meme Costume

who wore it better donald trump corn meme

Usually it's a compliment when someone tells you you have silky hair, but in the case of this Donald Trump vs. corn meme, we don't know! (Leaning towards not so much.) In either case, this would still be a very funny spin on a Donald Trump costume, one of the hottest Halloween choices of the year. We've already sold out of our men's billionaire wig [pictured below] twice, and it's not even Halloween yet! If you want a costume guaranteed to be a hit this year, then go with this idea...IT'S GONNA BE HUGE!

The Finished Look

Trump.jpg

Putting together this Donald Trump look is very simple - the hardest part will be perfecting that signature, pursed-lip expression. We used our men's $100 bill OppoSuit as a base, and styled our munchkin mayor wig for the hair. Though, we suppose it was really more like un-styling it. We then literally went to a grocery store and bought a single ear of corn. It was awkward, but it was worth it.

5. DIY Kanye 2020 Costume

Kanye 2020 meme

That Kanye...when he isn't interrupting speeches at the VMAs, then he's giving speeches of his own at the VMA's! In this year's speech, while he was accepting his Video Vanguard award, he also dramatically announced his plans to run for president in the year 2020. Of course this instantly inspired memes, Twitter campaigns, and even pumpkin patterns! Anything that viral automatically becomes a safe bet for a popular costume choice.

The Finished Look

Kanye.jpg

This look is easy and can be assembled however you like, provided you use a few key accessories! One must-have is a custom Kanye mask. We created ours with our custom mask creator, linked below. Another staple is an oversized gold chain. A microphone, ladder shades, and a golden award statue would really bring your Yeezus look home, but the details are up to you.

DIY Home Alone Wet Bandits Costume and Makeup Tutorial

Wet-Bandits-Header.jpg

Believe it or not, Home Alone came out 25 years ago, and has since become a Holiday classic. The first two films in the franchise are enjoyed by many each holiday season. Seriously, they’re on TV about 3 times a day in December; how can you NOT watch them? While the movie is a Christmas classic, the best parts come from the shock humor of the traps and tricks Kevin McCallister uses on the wet bandits, the villains/human punching bags of the film. We pulled together our own wet bandits DIY costume for those of you who want to look like you’ve had your face smashed with an iron without actually smashing your face with an iron.

Harry is the so-called leader and brains of the duo. He calls the shots and has quite the temper to him. Notable injuries he incurs include burns on both his hand and head. He also receives several scars and bruises on his face caused by multiple hits.

Marv is kind of the absent-minded sidekick of the two. He’s easily fooled and typically doesn’t think things through, which leads to him getting smashed in the face with an iron, getting a nail driven through his bare foot, and winding up with a tarantula on his face.

The Finished look

Wet-Bandits-C.jpg

For each of the bandits, all you’ll need is clothing to match the look of each of them. We went to a local thrift store and picked up shirts and coats. To get an authentic filthy look, we went out and found the dusty corner of our warehouse to dirty them up pretty good.

For the makeup, we used mostly red makeup and coagulated blood from our special effects makeup kit to get realistic looking scars. For the iron mark, make sure to leave lighter spots where the holes on the iron would be. You can also do some shading with a darker color to dirty up the faces a bit.

Are you a fan of Home Alone? What’s your favorite trap in the movie? Remember that Christmas ornaments by the window scene? OUCH! DIY Bob's Burgers Costumes

Bobs-Burgers-Header.jpg

If a cartoon can make it to a third season, that is a good sign it has connected with an audience and found syndicated success. The Simpsons, Family Guy, Adventure Time, these are all the rare success stories that have made it far past this mark. Bob’s Burgers, a relatively young animated television sitcom on the Fox network has made it far past its third season, and is now into its sixth! It was even recently announced that the show had been renewed for two more seasons.

What has made Bob’s Burgers so successful are the characters. No matter who you are, we are sure you can find someone in the Belcher family to identify with—whether it’s precocious Louise, silly and musical Gene, awkward Tina, loyal Linda or passionate Bob. Whether you have a full family to accompany you in your Bob’s Burger costume adventure, or are simply going alone (we’d suggest Tina if you are going solo), we have put together this fun and easy DIY to help you out.

The Parents: DIY Linda and Bob Costumes

Bob-and-Linda.jpg

Bob and Linda Belcher definitely mean well, and want the best for their children. While generally positive and well-meaning, they aren’t perfect (but who is?). For all their foibles, we love them and the mouthwatering, absurdly-named meat patties they serve up at Bob’s Burgers.

Products Used

Belcher Parents.jpg

Deluxe Black Glasses - Shop       Styleable Fever Nicole Brown Wig - Shop

Jack Sparrow Mustache & Goatee - Shop

A relatively simple DIY, the key product used was this Fever Nicole Brown Wig for Linda Belcher. You can find unadorned, white aprons at any home goods store. For real authenticity, let some grease splatter from a pan onto your apron and white shirt. If you can’t grow a beautiful, thick mustache like Bob, we suggest utilizing the upper-lip piece of this Jack Sparrow Mustache & Goatee. Tan trousers and black shoes for Bob, and simple jeans and white shoes make up Linda’s outfit. For the glasses, we simply sprayed these Deluxe Black Glasses with red paint.

The Kids: DIY Tina, Louise, and Gene Costumes

Tina-Louise-Gene.jpg

What’s an animated situational comedy without some hilarious and precocious children to combat the intentions of their parents at every whim? Even with just one of the three Belcher children, Bob’s Burgers would be funny; with all three it’s downright absurd. Dress up as your favorite of the incorrigible Belcher children with this nifty DIY guide.

Like their adult DIY counterparts, the looks for the Belcher children are fairly basic, with bright, unadorned colored t-shirts. While the outfits may look simple, the color combinations are so distinct that people will know exactly what your costume is (assuming they are cool, and have seen Bob’s Burgers).

DIY Tina Belcher Costume

Tina.jpg

For Tina, we have our model wear the Deluxe Black Glasses with a Tahiti Blue t-shirt and this Child Blue Felt Poodle Skirt turned backwards. Our Tina is wearing white shoes, but if you have some old, black Chuck Taylor’s and high white socks lying around, those would be perfect.

DIY Louise Belcher Costume

Louise.jpg

For Louise, we have our model wear this Power Rangers Green Ranger Skater Dress inside out. It turned out perfectly! Then we have, of course, the officially licensed Bob’s Burgers Louise Hat. Low-top black slip-on shoes or sneakers would work for footwear. The sass shown in the picture cannot be purchased.

DIY Gene Belchern Costume

Gene.jpg

Gene is the simplest costume of the bunch, and only requires rocking a Banana Cream shirt, blue shorts, and sneakers or flip flops. Simple attire for a simple boy. For the blue shorts, we shortened these inexpensive Where's Waldo Blue Pants. For both Louise and Gene we used this Black Hair Spray to get their hair a darker shade like on the television show. Gene is known for his…esoteric…musical talents, so we gave him a cheap Casio keyboard to jam out to.

Which member of the Belcher family do you most identify with? Really, it's OK to say Tina. We all feel a little like Tina sometimes. If you are a father or mother and you can convince the rest of your family to participate in this costume with you, we would love to see it. We know Cosmopolitan recently deemed the Kardashians the "first family," but we'd throw the Belchers' hat in the ring for that honor. If you want to dress as a giant burger made by Bob Belcher, consider this Adult Cheeseburger Costume. Not a bad idea if you have a sixth wheel friend trying to tag along with your Bob's Burgers DIY.

Rick and Morty Halloween Costume

If you understood the gibberish in the title of this post, you are probably a Rick and Morty fan. To no surprise, Halloween enthusiasts and Cosplayers are finding all sorts of ways to sport Rick and Morty costumes and, well, we wanted a piece of the belchy action! So listen, Morty <belch>, we have the perfect <belch> Rick and Morty Halloween costume DIY <belch>, for you, Morty.

But, before we cross dimensions, a little background on the show for those of you who haven't watched it yet. It's yet another Adult Swim instant classic for the kid-grown-ups of the world. That is, of course, if you can tolerate hearing "Morty" every four to five words and have a stomach for what must be the worst acid reflux in cartoon history. In Rick and Morty, we follow a morally ambiguous, all around mega-genius Rick paired with his lowest-IQ-imaginable nephew, Morty. They cross dimensions, travel through time, and basically do whatever they want with the uncomfortable, anxiety-fueled assurance that pretty much any damage can be undone with a little tinkering on Rick's part. Call it your classic odd couple mashup where anything can and will happen with enough time... and add in a lot of belching.

That's about it! Pretty simple. And better yet, so is pulling off a Rick and Morty Halloween costume. Without further ado, Morty, here it is, Morty - your guide to a Rick and Morty besties costume for Halloween 2015.

To create Rick’s signature hair, we used this mad scientist wig and a lot of back combing. You don’t want the wig to fall down into your face, so brush that thing back as much as you can. We actually pinned it back, doused it in hairspray, and let it sit overnight, and that really helped keep it standing straight up the next day. After that, take a bottle of blue or silver hairspray and cover it all up. Tuck your blue t-shirt in, pull on a pair of black pants, and hit the bottle. PLEASE be more responsible than Rick is!

Metal Gear Solid DIY

Metal Gear Solid is a wildly popular and critically acclaimed franchise of video games, a continuation (as sequels and prequels) of the earlier generation of Metal Gear games. But if you’re reading this, you probably knew that already. Solid Snake is the main protagonist of the series in general, though his commanding officer–and later antagonist, among other things–Big Boss has served as the protagonist since Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. While Big Boss is the focus of this do-it-yourself costume tutorial, we’re also including tips on dressing as Solid Snake because he appears eerily similar. It’s almost like Solid Snake is a clone…almost exactly like he’s a clone. (Okay, he’s a clone.)

Our tutorial is based on this screenshot of Big Boss (a.k.a. Naked Snake or Punished "Venom" Snake) from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. We have also included some options to dress as his clone and protagonist of the rest of the Metal Gear series, Solid Snake.

DIY Big Boss Halloween Costume

Completed Big Boss DIY costume

This is our completed costume. We went with a dark jumpsuit and vest, but keep in mind that it’s mostly a foundation: there’s some variation in his appearance throughout the Metal Gear Solid series, so it’s all about what you add to this basic outfit. We suggest starting with a “tactical” harness, holsters, and pouches. The “tactic,” of course, is to allow you to carry as much candy as possible.

These are the products used in this tutorial. If you’re aiming for Big Boss as he appears above, this is all you’ll need. We did include some additional products below if you’re dressing as Solid Snake or older versions of either Snake.

We started by removing the patches from our SWAT jumpsuit, and added the eye patch (on the right eye!), combat boots, and motorcycle gloves. Don’t let the product image of gloves fool you - they look great on men or women. Add the rifle and you’re set. (And yes, we realize that the gun is an obvious toy. Safety first, kids.) As far as costumes go, it's not time-consuming at all. You’re looking at 15 minutes, tops!

You can add realism with a fake mustache and beard, makeup scars, and dirt and grime, but these aren’t necessary. This could add an hour or more to your preparation time, so make sure to take that into account.

These are other products to consider. In some of the games, you may find that our paratrooper costume is a better fit for Big Boss or Solid Snake. If you need a headband, the Cobra Kai headband works great once the logo is removed. If you wanted to dress as an older Big Boss or even Solid Snake (“Old Snake”), pick up some silver hair spray. (And remember, if you’re going as Old Snake, wear the eyepatch on your left eye!) We also included some handguns as alternatives to the rifle.

The Banality of Evil Art Series

Evil is the ideal, but life is long and doesn’t always go as planned. It comes with inherent banality; the boredom that fills those long hours in between the next devious plot, slashing, or scare. We’ve all been stuck at the grocery store after working a ten hour night shift and had to wait in line behind the coupon lady as she meticulously counts each penny. We’ve all had to go to our nephew’s birthday party and make small talk when just hours before we took out an entire spaceship full of soldiers with nothing but our face-hugging hatchlings and a little mouth acid. Horror stars are relatable because, in the end, they’re just like us. They have to deal with life as it is, not as it often should be. The classic films capture the terrifying glory of their careers, but what happens when the killing is done and horror stars have to fill their time with the usual fare? This is the rarely seen banal side of evil…

2. The Babadook from The Babadook

3. Brundlefly from The Fly

4. Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street

You’d think Freddy would be dead tired after staying up all night, but he can’t sleep because his mind won’t stop asking unanswerable existential questions.

5. Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th

Teenagers these days seem to run faster than they used to, so Jason keeps in shape with marathon running. Someone even handed him off a drink!

6. Michael Myers from Halloween

Looking for a way to give back to the community after all those murders, Michael Myers became a CPR manikin for new unsuspecting lifeguards.

7. Pinhead from Hellraiser

8. Samara from The Ring

Bojack Horseman and Princess Carolyn Couples Costume DIY

What came first, the creepy horse mask or BoJack Horseman? We like to think that's a theological question better reserved for the philosophers. After all, the talking horse has been a bit of a spirit animal in pop culture dating as far back as Mr. Ed and however many tons of peanut butter the poor beast chewed throughout his career. No matter the origins, or our strange fascination with talking horses, the Netflix original hit BoJack Horseman made an immediate impact on an adult-themed cartoon universe. Competing with other big names like Family Guy, Rick and Morty, or really anything else you'll find on Fox or Adult Swim, it's the kind of show that makes immediate sense on an entirely offbeat and sarcastic level.

For anyone unfamiliar with the show, we follow a washed-up, 90s sitcom dad through trial and tribulation as he struggles to find purpose in a world that outgrew the days of cheesy sweaters and soft piano themed "touching moments" wrapped nicely with a 30-minutes-solves-everything bow. (Think of the end of every Full House ever and you get the idea.) Slightly depressed, very foul-mouthed, entitled, and all around lost, you somehow still find a way to love poor old BoJack as he gropes his way through a world that outgrew him, and yet, that desperately hopes he lands back on his feet.

If you are a fan of the show, you just might be considering a BoJack Horseman couples costume this year. But being a human and all, the task may seem a bit daunting at first. Fear not, long-faced friend, this BoJack and Princess Carolyn couples costume guide will be sure to give you what you need.

The Final Look: BoJack Horseman

Bojack Horseman Halloween Costume

BoJack’s look is simple, but you need three very important pieces to make this costume work, otherwise you’re just a dude with a horse head. There’s the mask, of course, but take a trip to your local thrift store to find a gray blazer and a blue, cheesy 90s dad sweater. You’ll know them when you see them, trust us. After you find those, layer them all together with some jeans and sneakers, and perfect your sad, defeated poses.

The Final Look: Princess Carolyn

Princess Carolyn Halloween Costume

Princess Carolyn takes a bit more crafting than BoJack, but it is easy stuff:

  • First, flip that Beemo dress inside out! Voila, instant teal mini dress.
  • Then, we created the fish on her dress by cutting about a dozen out of yellow felt and using double sided tape to stick them on.
  • We found the mustard colored cardigan and belt from the thrift store.
  • To create her necklace, we cut a triangle from the same yellow felt and taped a circle-shaped piece of red felt to the front of it. The necklace part is a piece of yellow ribbon and we attached the triangle to with a piece of thin yarn.
  • For the wig, we just pulled it back into a low pony tail and clipped the bangs up to get that mini-pompadour look that Carolyn rocks.
  • Lastly, we pinked the model! We used pink face paint and went to town. Everywhere! Here’s a tip, though: avoid having to color her arms and legs by wearing pink fishnet tights. For the arms, we just cut the legs and toes off a second pair of the tights and wore them as sleeves. It’s a great time saver!

There you have it! If you have a group, too, there are plenty more characters from the show that you could add to the costume – like Todd, the slacker, Mr. Peanutbutter, the puppy, and Diane, BoJack’s ghostwriter. Show us in the comments if you decide to go as the characters from BoJack Horseman! Happy Halloween!

DIY Scary Mermaid

Think about mermaids for a moment. Are you picturing a shy-but-friendly woman/fish-hybrid right out of Splash or The Little Mermaid? Or maybe even that string of direct-to-video movies starring Barbie? (Which begs the question: can a doll truly “star” in a movie?) If so, you’re not alone, because these mythical creatures are often portrayed as mysterious but ultimately good at heart. But this hasn’t always been the case! For much of history, “mermaids” were seen as terrifying creatures, having been blamed for luring sailors to their watery deaths or the disappearance of entire ships! Now if that’s the type of scary mermaid you’d like to dress as for Halloween or Cosplay, keep reading to see how we did it! And stick around for tips on what to do (if anything) if you have a broken bone or other injury at Halloween.

Of course, not every modern portrayal of mermaids is friendly or harmless. This digital painting by Olivier Ponsonnet is a great example of the Scary Mermaid art that’s out there, and is similar to what we were going for!

Our model quite obviously had a cast on during this photoshoot. We had considered covering it up–we’ll get into those options later–but we figured that the cast fit both the color scheme (black) and general subject (scary mermaid) of the costume.

Scary Mermaid Makeup Tutorial

Closeup photo of our DIY Scary Mermaid

Makeup Tips:

  • We went with a two-step process involving prosthetics and makeup. For most of the fake wounds, we found that mixing and matching prosthetic bullet wounds, vampire bites, cut throats, and zombie rot, gave us a realistic and scary foundation.
  • Our gills were made by cutting the edges of prosthetics and layering them, though the “3-D Gel” in our zombie makeup kit can give a similar effect.
  • The skin makeup is mostly green and yellow blended tones for the foundation, with patches of bruising and blood.
  • To pull off a great fake bruise, start with a dab of purple makeup and spread it around in a rough two-inch circle, then blend brown and yellow over that.
  • For fresher fake wounds, apply red makeup (and maybe a little purple) with a heavily-textured sponge or cloth so that the texture “prints” on the skin. Be careful not to smudge the texture.

Wardrobe Tips:

  • The clothes were the top from our Pirate Noir Costume–remember to remove the lace and straps–and the bottom from our High Society Dress.
  • If you’ll be walking around, flare out the sides of the dress with a coat hanger or some other stiff but bendable material. (Please be careful. And consider getting that tetanus booster, mkay?)
  • The “glove” was actually a single Black Fence Net Pantyhose legging, with some selective holes cut into the netting.
  • We completed the picture with Chain Link Rope.

Tips on Incorporating an Injury:

  • As you can tell, our model had a cast for the photoshoot. Some costumes allow you to cover an injury with flowing sleeves or a robe. Others might be inflatable or feature a shield.
  • You could also design a costume around an injury, like being “accident prone.” We decided to leave the cast as-is, because, well, she’s a scary mermaid that’s covered with injuries.

Darkwing Duck Halloween Costume DIY

You’re not just an average citizen punching the clock every day. You’re the terror that flaps in the night! You’re the batteries that aren’t included! Sometimes, you’re outwitted by a highly intelligent inverse version of yourself, but you always find a way to prevail for the righteousness of St. Canard. And, of course, you regularly yell out your bone-chilling battle cry, “LET’S GET DANGEROUS!”

Okay, so maybe you aren’t all of these things just yet. But, you can be this Halloween if you sport this Darkwing Duck throwback costume. Ahhh, sweet 90s nostalgia! For anyone who doesn’t remember, this crime-fighting duck was a spinoff of the Disney hit, DuckTales, throughout the 90s. Going by the secret identity of Drake Mallard, Darkwing would appear unaware of the dangers unfolding around him, but he always managed to prevail over evil.

DIY Darkwing Duck Costume

Darkwing Duck Throwback Costume

Let's Get Dangerous!

Here’s the complete look for D.W. For everyone who grew up in the 90s, recognizing Darkwing will be a no-brainer, so be prepared to quack “Let’s get dangerous” on occasion, just to let people know you were serious when deciding on this costume. Please, pleeease keep in mind that you have no actual super powers, though. This costume does not give you the ability to fight crime and you could be seriously injured. We understand as a kid you re-enacted fight scenes and jumped off your bed into action, but you’re much older, taller, and more likely to break a bone now. (We’re being sarcastic, of course – well, sort of!)

We started with the jacket from our purple leisure suit, then layered it with a black cape to give it the superhero appeal! The four buttons were created with gold construction paper and cut using a coffee cup as the outline, each about four inches in diameter. A simple duck nose was used on the face along with the tie mask of Donatello from our Ninja Turtles kit.

We also dipped into the ninja kit to use the Leonardo blue fabric to insinuate the turtleneck portion of the costume. We decided to go with white tights to bring out the skinny, bird leg effect, and finished the bottom off with feet from our adult duck costume. Almost forgot! The western sheriff hat also has a purple tie used from the accessory kit, pulling together the black and purple theme D.W. is most known for.

Our favorite part of the costume might just be the makeup! After painting the entire face with white body paint, we cut a few feathers off of a white boa and attached them to both sides of the face using spirit gum. It takes a little bit of patience to learn how to not glue the feathers to your FINGERS, but we promise, a little bit goes a long way to put the finishing touches on this costume.

DIY Women's Darkwing Duck Costume

That's quack-tastic!

You might also remember Launchpad, Darkwing Duck's trusty sidekick, and his daughter, Groslyn, helping our hero fight off the evil villains of St. Canard. (Possible group costume alert!) While we didn’t dig into the full group look, we did think all the 90s-nostalgia-loving ladies out there might also appreciate an option.

We made this female version super simply! Using most of the same products in the men’s version (minus the paper buttons) we added the feather boa as a scarf and added this Joker skater dress underneath for some extra coverage. We casually tied what was used as the scarf in the men’s version around the waist, giving emphasis to the hips. Instead of duck flippers, our model wore these orange go-go boots instead.

If you’re thinking of dressing up as a witch for Halloween, be prepared to run into at least a few others. Witches are one of the most popular Halloween costumes of all time, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a unique look if you want to dress up like one!

“I’m melting! I’m melting! Oh, what a world!” The famous last words of the wicked witch of the East in the Wizard of Oz are one of many memorable lines from the movie. All it took was a bucket of water to melt one of the most wicked witches away. It makes you wonder what  a witch might look like after just a mist of water hits on her face. She’d just looked...burned, right? And a little melty? We put together this burnt witch makeup makeup tutorial to get just that look, a-sure fire way to help your witch stand out from the west. Errr- the rest.

DIY Burnt Witch Costume

Burnt-Witch-2.jpg

To get the look, you’ll want to start with a witch costume, of course. Here, we used our exclusive deluxe wicked witch costume. Accessories like striped socks, black shoes, and a broom (of the flying variety, not for cleaning) pull the look together. Now, just apply the makeup and gather your posse of flying monkey’s and you’ll be ready to go out. The specific products we used are listed below!

Burnt Witch Makeup Tutorial

Complete Burnt Witch Makeup

Burnt-Witch-4.jpg

Ok, you don’t need flying monkeys, but a wicked witch has got to be green, right? For the foundation, we used green face makeup along with several products from our special effects makeup kit to get the look. Here are some tips to help "melt your face:"

  • Start by dripping liquid latex down the side of your face for the burnt look.

  • Use extra flesh along with liquid latex to extend your nose.

  • Apply finishing powder and allow everything to set before makeup application.

  • Cover the whole face with green face makeup. Add darker green in any areas where you want shadows.

  • Brush with red from the bruise kit to create bloody areas and bruising.

  • Use extra flesh and rigid collodion to create any scars.

  • Apply coagulated blood over any areas for a life-like, bloody look.

Cute Turned Creepy: DIY Bloody Bunny Costume

Header.jpg

Remember the childhood poem about Little Bunny Foo Foo? He was a fluffy little jerk who would harass all the field mice by bopping them on the heads. Well, karma finally bit Bunny Foo Foo on his furry bottom!

The Good Fairy had enough of his disrespect and she did way more than just turn him into a goon. She took him to her hideaway and The Good Fairy and her magical friends used their wands to cause that bunny bully some serious pain. No one quite knows what happened to Little Bunny Foo Foo; he won't discuss it. We even called The Good Fairy to answer some of our pressing questions regarding the incident, but she hasn't returned any of our calls.

Now Foo Foo spends the majority of his days moping around the briar patch, trying to find a way to keep his eyeball from hanging out of its socket. Has he finally learned his lesson? Only time will tell. We hope, for Foo Foo's sake, that he stays on the fairies' good side!

If you want to concoct your own DIY Bloody Bunny Costume and pay your respects to the former fuzzy tormentor you once sang about...we'll teach you how! Keep in mind, hare today...goon tomorrow!

DIY Bloody Bunny Costume

Bloody-Bunny-1.jpg

Take our Bunny Mascot costume and go frolicking in the mud! Make sure the mitts have lots of caked on dirt so they look really crusty. Remember, the days of bopping field mice on the head are long gone, so make the paws as grimy as possible!

Bloody-Bunny-2.jpg

Foo Foo has experienced difficulty hopping around since the assault. Rumor has it that he uses a branch as a cane now. Go out in the wild and find your own branch to drag around. It'll make the perfect accessory!

Bloody-Bunny-3.jpg

Want to make sure that your bunny costume is eye-catching? Well, it's all about the eyeball, folks! Take an old doorknob and splatter it with fake blood. Next, attach the doorknob to some knotted rope. The rope will become the 'tendons.' This creates an eye-popping 3-D effect, that is terrifying to say the least!

Bloody-Bunny-4.jpg

Peek-a-boo! Want to play a game with Foo Foo? It's a game called: Where is the rest of my ear?! Take a pair of scissors and go to town on one of the mascot's ears. Mangle it as best as you can! When you're done, the ear should look like a little nub. Next, coat that nub with fake blood and mud.

Bloody-Bunny-5.jpg

The life of a disfigured rabbit can get exhausting! Little Bunny needs to take a breather every so often, so even the feet of the bunny suit need to be disgusting. Rub some dirt in between the toes. Go ahead, stomp on some insects! The bunny's feet need to be incredibly gritty and as gross as possible.

Bloody-Bunny-6.jpg

Got any carrots? Or lettuce? Or any cold french fries that are stuck in between the seats of your car? This rabbit will eat anything! He can't really fend for himself anymore soooo he'll take whatever he can get. Be sure to make every inch on the bunny mask as detailed as possible. Splash some blood on the teeth and saturate his little pink nose with filth. Little Bunny Foo Foo's nose doesn't even twitch anymore, it just trembles with despair.

Wolverine DIY and Alternate Logan Ideas: Be the Best There Is at What You Do

James "Logan" Howlett, better known as Wolverine, is the most iconic character in Marvel’s superhero team the X-Men, and possibly in Marvel comics as a whole. He’s pretty much the leader of the X-Men, if you ignore Scott “Prettyboy-I-Mean-Cyclops” Summers, which you should. (Ooh! Shots Energy beams fired.) What this means is that Wolverine has always been a popular choice when it comes to Halloween costumes. There’s nothing wrong with standard Wolverine costumes, but sometimes it’s fun to set yourself apart, and you can do so with a set of DIY Wolverine claws and a custom hairstyle, or even by designing your own costume based on his more obscure appearances in comics and movies.

1. Wolverine’s Claws DIY Tutorial

[Source]

Wolverine’s claws are his most recognizable feature, apart from his hair (which we’ll get to, of course). We have Wolverine Claws gloves, but sometimes you feel like making your own, you know? We love this how-to on making great-looking claws using cardboard or mounting board, wooden chopsticks, hot glue, and silver spray paint. The only downside of these vs gloves, is that your hand is partially filled with the cross-pieces that keep the claws together, so it may be difficult to hold your Trick or Treat bag or drink at the same time.

Wolverine’s hair and beard aren’t difficult to do, you just need enough hair to pull it off. And, of course, having dark hair helps. If you’re golden-haired or insufficiently em-bearded, you might need to add some black hair spray or a wig and beard set to your Halloween shopping list. But as the above images show, Hugh Jackman pulled it off with a variety of hair lengths and colors, and he, like, is Wolverine.

So how do you get the look? Sweep the hair at your temples back and up, and the hair on top forwards. Mousse and/or hair spray helps, maybe even both. Trim your mustache and top of your chin (if applicable). Look at the photos for guidance, it’s not rocket surgery.

Okay, so what if you decide the DIY route isn’t for you? What if you really just want to buy a costume and have someone else–that means us–do all the work for you? Hey, there’s no shame in that. And don’t worry, we’ve got your back, whether you’re interested in a more traditional look from Wolverine’s costume evolution or something a bit…different. Take a look at these three alternate Wolverine costume ideas below.

3. Old Man Logan Costume Idea

Old Man Logan was an eight-issue series running from 2008 to 2009, which was recently rebooted in 2015. In this post-apocalyptic world of Earth-807128, supervillains run the United States and superheroes are either dead or in hiding. Logan is an old man–hence the title–who gets drawn back into his (previous) life as Wolverine.

Logan has shorter hair but a bushier beard, and he’s well into his silver years. If you’re no silver fox or naturally hirsute, we recommend some hair spray and a fake beard. Logan still has his claws, of course, but his hands bleed whenever they’re used, so be sure to pick up some fake blood.

4. Adamantium Skeleton Costume Idea

In the first Civil War crossover series in 2006-2007, Nitro burned Wolverine down to his adamantium skeleton. Wolverine was similarly incinerated by a Sentinal in the 1981 Days of Future Past storyline. Of course, it’s only a matter of time before he regenerates, but a fun costume or Cosplay idea is Wolverine as a skeleton.

You can accomplish this look with a basic skeleton costume and claws. It can be difficult holding DIY claws with skeletal gloves, so we recommend wearing our Wolverine Claws underneath the Skeleton Hands, with holes cut in the gloves for the claws to stick out from.

5. Lumberjack Logan Costume Idea

Lincoln Wig and Beard Set – Shop        Plastic Cigar – Shop

Let’s face it, X-Men Origins: Wolverine was not a great film. The twists in his origin story, like having him fight in the American Civil War, were strange choices. (Especially since he’s Canadian!) But seeing Logan as a lumberjack was so ridiculous yet somehow so appropriate. (Probably because he’s Canadian!) Keeping in mind that sometimes the most obscure costumes are the most brilliant, Lumberjack Logan may just be our favorite alternate Wolverine idea.

The base costume is the lumberjack. Logan has his trademark beard and a shaggier hairstyle, similar to our Abraham Lincoln wig and beard. Don’t forget the cigar and axe, though. The claws are optional, but it’s Wolverine so of course you’ll want them.
